If unwanted WhatsApp messages start after customers find your business in Google Search or Maps, remove or replace the WhatsApp contact option on your Google Business Profile. To stop a particular sender, block that account in WhatsApp. Reporting can ask WhatsApp to review a problem account, but reporting alone does not prevent further messages.
First identify where the messages are coming from
A WhatsApp button on a Google Business Profile can let potential customers open a chat with your business. Google says claimed and verified profiles can add WhatsApp or text contact options, but the feature is available only in select regions. WhatsApp also confirms that adding a WhatsApp Business number to a profile can create a click-to-chat button on Google Search and Maps results.
Google’s former Business Profile chat and call-history features ended on July 31, 2024. That change did not eliminate every way customers can contact a business from its listing: eligible profiles may still offer text or WhatsApp options. The current WhatsApp contact route is distinct from the retired Business Messages inbox. See Google’s current Business Profile chat guidance, WhatsApp’s guide to linking a number from a Google Business Profile, and Google’s information about the former chat and call-history features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRemove or change the WhatsApp route on your Google Business Profile
If you do not want new customers starting WhatsApp chats through your listing, edit the contact option rather than relying only on blocks. In your business profile, open Edit profile → Contact → Chat → Edit. Remove the WhatsApp option or replace it with another contact route Google supports for your profile, then save the change. The exact options shown can vary by region and profile eligibility.

Block a customer who keeps messaging
To stop contact from a particular account, open its WhatsApp conversation or sender information and choose Block. WhatsApp says blocked people cannot send your account messages or calls. Blocking does not delete the existing conversation or remove the number from your phone’s contacts; archive or delete the chat separately if you want it out of view. If you may need a record, save screenshots or a chat backup before removing it.

A block does not hide the blocked person’s messages in a WhatsApp group you both share. WhatsApp says a group itself cannot be blocked. You can leave the group, block its admin, or adjust group privacy settings to limit who can add you.
Report spam, abuse, or fraud separately
Use WhatsApp’s in-app report option when a message or account merits review—for example, suspected spam, abuse, or fraud. Depending on the flow, you can report and block together. WhatsApp says a report may include up to five recent messages and relevant account or message details, and the reported user or group is not notified. A report does not guarantee that WhatsApp will ban the account or take another action.

Reporting alone does not block the sender, so block the account as well if you want to prevent it from messaging or calling your WhatsApp account. WhatsApp also provides a separate reporting process for catalogs or businesses; use the in-app options appropriate to the issue. Read WhatsApp’s guidance on reporting and blocking, its instructions for blocking and reporting someone, and its guide to reporting a catalog or business.
Use the unknown-account setting only for unusually high message volume
WhatsApp has an advanced Block unknown account messages control intended to block unknown accounts when their message volume is unusually high. It is not a blanket setting that rejects every message from a number you have not saved. WhatsApp says normal contact resumes when message rates return to normal, so use this as an additional high-volume safeguard—not as a replacement for blocking a specific sender or changing your public listing route. See WhatsApp’s information about blocking unknown account messages.

Keep public business contact separate from a personal number
If you want customers to keep reaching you on WhatsApp without publishing your personal line, consider using a separate business number. A separate or dual-SIM phone can help keep the lines distinct, but it is optional and will not filter spam or stop messages to a number that is already public. Before changing your listing, confirm that the specific number works with WhatsApp Business and is supported for your Google Business Profile in your region.

What happens when an unknown number messages you?
WhatsApp says a first-time message from a number not saved in your contacts may include context such as shared groups and the country where the number is registered. Use that information to decide whether to add or trust the sender, block them, or report the message. For urgent danger or a suspected crime, WhatsApp advises contacting local emergency services or authorities and keeping relevant screenshots or a backup when appropriate. Its safety guidance is at How to stay safe on WhatsApp.
