If a YouTube radio livestream ends during a quiet passage, first check the stream’s Auto-start & auto-stop setting in YouTube Live Control Room, then inspect your encoder or broadcasting software for a silence, audio-inactivity, idle-timeout, or automatic-stop rule. YouTube’s reviewed help documentation does not describe a universal YouTube-side silence detector or a switch to disable one, so the exact fix depends on which part of your setup is stopping the stream.

First identify which part is stopping the stream

There are two different controls to distinguish. YouTube documents a stream-level Auto-start & auto-stop setting; when enabled, it allows starting or stopping the stream from the encoder. Separately, encoder or production software may have its own automation that stops sending content after silence or inactivity. YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube’s encoder guide describes that behavior, but the official YouTube materials reviewed do not identify a setting called YouTube silence detection.

That means a stream ending during silence does not, on its own, prove YouTube detected silence. Check whether the encoder stopped sending a feed, whether an automation rule stopped it, or whether the stream’s settings allow the encoder to stop the broadcast.

Check YouTube Live Control Room settings

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room for the affected stream.
  2. Open the stream’s settings and inspect Auto-start & auto-stop. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” See Manage live stream settings.
  3. If auto-stop is enabled, determine whether your workflow needs the encoder to be able to stop the stream. Change the setting only if it fits the way you start and end broadcasts.
  4. If you created this stream by reusing or copying previous stream settings, check the setting again: reused settings carry these choices forward.

This is a stream start/stop control, not a documented audio-silence threshold. Changing it may prevent an encoder stop from ending the broadcast, but it does not fix an encoder that has stopped sending content.

Inspect the encoder or broadcasting software

Open the software that sends the radio program to YouTube and look for any rule that can stop streaming or stop output when audio is absent. Possible search terms include:

  • Silence detection or audio inactivity
  • Idle timeout
  • Stop on no signal
  • Automatic stop or automation rule

These are terms to search for, not verified menu names for a particular encoder. The precise control and click path depend on the product and version. If you find a rule that stops the stream during quiet audio, disable it or extend its threshold as appropriate, then test the change. If you cannot find the control, consult the encoder vendor’s documentation for your exact software and version.

Test the actual radio playback chain

  1. Run a private or unlisted test using the same playback chain and encoder settings intended for the radio stream.
  2. Include representative quiet passages, not just a continuous music segment. Confirm that the encoder continues sending a valid stream during those passages.
  3. Monitor stream health and listen to the audio while checking the video feed. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream quality; see YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
  4. Check the encoder’s logs or status display if the feed stops. Establish whether the encoder stopped output, lost its connection, or kept sending content while YouTube ended the stream.

Do not make artificial tone or noise the default workaround. It can affect the radio audio and will not correct a mistaken stop rule or an encoder that is terminating its output.

Test failover separately and keep a local recording

If your setup includes a backup encoder, test failover as a separate recovery check. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then confirming playback moves to the backup. That test checks backup behavior; YouTube does not say failover prevents a silence-triggered stop. See YouTube’s encoder failover guidance.

Keep a local archive as well. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends a local archive backup. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
