Put exit; immediately after outputting the JavaScript alert in the PHP branch that should stop. The alert displays in the browser; exit ends the server-side script.

Stop the request in the same conditional branch

For a validation failure, emit the alert and then terminate PHP before execution can reach later code:

<?php
if (!$valid) {
    echo '<script>alert("Please correct the highlighted fields.");</script>';
    exit;
}

// This code runs only when $valid is true.

PHP’s official exit manual describes it as terminating execution of the script. You may write exit without parentheses. die() is an alias, so either works; choose one consistently.

Why the alert alone does not stop PHP

alert() is JavaScript that runs in the browser after it receives the response. It does not control the PHP process that generated that response. PHP continues executing unless its own control flow ends—for example, with exit, a return from the relevant handler, or an exception handled by an outer layer.

Choose the right way to stop or redirect

Situation Use What it does
Fatal validation or guard failure in the current script exit; or die; Ends the script immediately.
Redirecting to another URL header('Location: /next'); exit; Sends the redirect header and then ends PHP; header() alone does not stop execution.
Recoverable application error to be handled by an outer layer Throw an exception, such as throw new RuntimeException(...), and catch it at the appropriate boundary Unwinds execution to the handler and runs encountered finally blocks. Statements after the throw do not run unless control resumes through the catch.

For a redirect, terminate or return from the handler after setting the header so code below it cannot run. See the PHP header() manual.

What exit runs—and what it does not

exit() runs registered shutdown functions and object destructors, but it does not run finally blocks. If cleanup in a finally block is required, use an exception that reaches the intended handler rather than exiting directly. The PHP manual’s exit documentation describes its shutdown behavior.

You can also pass a message or process status to exit. A string is printed before termination and produces exit code 0; an integer sets the exit code. PHP documents valid exit codes as 0–254, with 255 reserved. For example:

exit('Please correct the highlighted fields.');
// Or, for process/API status:
exit(1);

Since PHP 8.4, exit() is a proper function rather than a language construct and follows standard type semantics. Invalid argument types, such as an array, can raise TypeError; pass a deliberate string or integer. See the PHP 8.4 RFC.

Use HTTP responses for APIs and framework handlers

A JavaScript alert is appropriate only when the response is intended to be rendered as a web page. For an HTTP API, return an appropriate HTTP status and structured response body instead of JavaScript. In a framework, use its response or abort mechanism and follow the handler’s contract; make sure execution cannot fall through into later business logic.

Do not confuse exit with timeouts or a browser Stop button

exit() is an explicit PHP control-flow decision. It is different from PHP’s execution-time limit or from a client aborting a request. PHP documents a default max_execution_time of 30 seconds, configurable through php.ini or set_time_limit(), and documents client-abort handling separately. See the execution-time configuration manual and connection handling manual.
