The delay may be in PHP’s synchronous command execution, a shell wrapper or inherited output pipe, or PhantomJS itself waiting for a page or resource. Capture stdout and stderr, inspect the process tree, and then choose the fix that matches what is still running.
Why PHP can keep waiting after launching PhantomJS
shell_exec() runs a command and returns its output as a string when the command completes. It is not a background-job API. A command in the foreground normally keeps PHP waiting until the invoked process has finished and its output can be collected.
A command string can also involve an intermediate shell. The process relationship may look like PHP → shell → PhantomJS, rather than PHP → PhantomJS. If PHP signals or observes the shell, that does not necessarily mean the PhantomJS child has stopped. A historical PHP bug report describes this wrapper-versus-child complication; it is useful context, not proof that every current platform behaves identically.
Output handles matter, too. PHP’s exec documentation warns that a program intended to continue in the background needs its output redirected; otherwise PHP can wait for it. That does not make redirection a universal fix for a foreground command. If the intended behavior is synchronous, deliberately collect or route the streams and ensure descendants do not keep inherited descriptors open.

Finally, PHP may simply be waiting because PhantomJS has not completed its own work. An archived PhantomJS issue describes an intermittent wait associated with a resource load. Replacing shell_exec() alone will not resolve a page callback or network operation that never reaches a completion path.
Diagnose the wait before changing the command
- Record the execution context. Note the PHP version, operating system, PhantomJS version, exact command and arguments, working directory, and whether PHP runs under CLI, FPM, Apache, or another service. The account and environment used by a web server can differ from an interactive shell.
- Reproduce under the same account. Run the PhantomJS script from the command line as the same OS user that runs PHP, with the same working directory and inputs. This can expose permission, environment, and path differences.
- Separate the output streams. Capture stdout and stderr independently so that PhantomJS errors are not lost in normal output. Use files for a first diagnosis if output volume or pipe handling is uncertain.
- Inspect the process tree while it is stuck. Use the process-inspection tools appropriate to Linux/macOS or Windows. If the direct child or shell has ended but PhantomJS remains, investigate a surviving descendant or wrapper. If PhantomJS is still active and resource or network work is ongoing, inspect the page script and its load behavior.
- Check whether output descriptors remain open. A child or descendant can keep a pipe open after the apparent parent process exits, preventing the caller from seeing end-of-output. Consider both stdout and stderr, not just the stream PHP currently reads.
These observations narrow the cause; they do not by themselves prove it. Process-tree inspection commands, descriptor tools, and signal behavior differ between operating systems. Validate any cleanup procedure on the deployment platform rather than copying a POSIX signal recipe into Windows code.
Choose between a simple command and controlled process management

Use the simplest method that fits the job, but do not construct a shell command by concatenating untrusted input. PHP’s proc_open documentation says that since PHP 7.4.0, an argument array opens the process directly without going through a shell and PHP handles argument escaping. Verify the installed PHP version before using that form.
Run PhantomJS with proc_open and deliberate output handling
The following synchronous example uses PHP 7.4 or later, passes the executable and script as separate arguments, sends stdout and stderr to separate files, closes stdin, and waits for the exit status. Replace the executable and script paths with paths valid for the PHP service account.

?>Make sure the PHP account can write to both log files and traverse the working-directory path. For a one-off diagnosis, append mode preserves earlier runs; rotate or otherwise manage logs in a long-running service. A nonzero exit status is a clue to correlate with stderr and the script’s own completion behavior, not an explanation by itself.
If you need to read output through pipes
PHP documents stdin, stdout, and stderr descriptors for proc_open(). If you use pipes, consume output or route it elsewhere so a child cannot block because a pipe buffer fills. Avoid a simplistic sequence that waits for all stdout before reading stderr: enough stderr output can fill its pipe while PHP is blocked on stdout. For large output, either drain both streams in a design that can make progress on each, or direct them to files as in the example.
After handling output, close pipe handles that remain open, then call proc_close(). PHP says proc_close() waits for process termination and closes open pipes to avoid deadlock, since a child may be unable to exit while pipes remain open. In PHP versions before 8.3.0, calling proc_get_status() before proc_close() could affect the exit code returned by proc_close(); PHP 8.3.0 changed this behavior. Check the version-specific manual notes when status polling is part of your flow.
Cancel a process without mistaking the shell for PhantomJS
proc_terminate() signals the process represented by a proc_open() handle and returns immediately. It does not guarantee that the process has exited. Use proc_get_status() to poll that process if you need to observe its state; consult the proc_terminate documentation for platform-specific signal behavior.

When a string command started a shell that then launched PhantomJS, terminating the shell may leave PhantomJS alive. The historical PHP report records this distinction and discusses a shell exec prefix as a workaround in that context; later comments point to the PHP 7.4 argument-array interface. Do not treat that history as a portable guarantee. Prefer direct process creation where supported, and use platform-appropriate process-group or descendant cleanup only after validating it in your environment.
If you must cancel a task reliably, define what should happen to the whole process tree on the target OS, how PHP detects the deadline, and where partial output and exit information are recorded. A signal to one process is not automatically a process-tree shutdown policy.
Check PhantomJS script completion and resource waits
Review the PhantomJS script separately from PHP. Success, error, and timeout paths should each have a clear completion route, and the script should call phantom.exit() with a meaningful status when its work is done. This is a script-lifecycle check, not a guarantee that adding that call will fix PHP waiting: an unresolved callback, a resource wait, or an execution path that never reaches the exit call can still keep PhantomJS active.
The PhantomJS API index documents API sections but does not make a PHP-specific promise about process waits. Archived issue reports include both a report of PHP exec() not returning and a separate report involving PhantomJS 2.1.1 intermittently waiting on a resource load. These are user reports, not controlled evidence of how often either cause occurs or a universal diagnosis.

Troubleshoot common failure patterns
- PHP waits and no output appears. Confirm whether the process is still active and whether output is buffered or redirected. Check both stdout and stderr, then inspect the process tree and inherited handles.
- The shell exits, but PhantomJS remains. The command may have launched a child that outlived its wrapper. Use direct argument-array invocation where PHP 7.4 or later is available, and plan descendant cleanup for the operating system in use.
- The process stops only after a timeout elsewhere. Determine whether that timeout belongs to PHP, the web server, a job runner, or PhantomJS script logic. A caller timing out does not necessarily terminate the child process.
proc_close()appears to wait forever. Check whether PhantomJS itself is still working, whether it awaits a page/resource event, and whether pipes are open or not being drained. Closing pipes avoids one documented deadlock condition but cannot make an unfinished child exit.- The exit code is unexpected or
-1. Record the PHP version and whetherproc_get_status()was called beforeproc_close(). PHP documents a relevant exit-code change in 8.3.0. - The script works in a terminal but not in the web application. Verify the service account, absolute executable and script paths, working directory, permissions, environment, and writable log locations.
- A fix works on Linux but not Windows, or vice versa. Re-check shell behavior, process signaling, and process-group handling on that OS. PHP documents Windows-specific
bypass_shelland process-group options; they are not interchangeable with POSIX assumptions.
Keep the operational trade-offs in view
There is no evidence here that one PHP launch method is faster than another; choose based on control, observability, and the workload rather than assumed performance. File-backed logs reduce pipe-draining complexity but require storage permissions, rotation, and a plan for sensitive output. Pipe-based capture keeps output in the PHP flow but requires deliberate handling of both streams and potentially large output.
For web requests, consider whether a potentially slow screenshot belongs in the request-response path at all. If it does, define a bounded wait and report failures clearly; if it does not, a job system may be more appropriate, but that changes the architecture and requires its own process supervision. Do not assume that abandoning the PHP request stops PhantomJS.
PhantomJS is a legacy dependency: its repository identifies 2.1 as the latest stable release, says development is suspended, and has been archived read-only since 2023-05-30. That is relevant when planning maintenance, but it does not mean every existing installation must immediately migrate. Evaluate alternatives against the pages and scripts your application actually needs.

Does adding phantom.exit() always stop PHP from hanging?
No. It helps only when execution reaches that call. A page or resource operation that never completes can prevent the script from reaching its exit path.
Can I use an argument array with proc_open() on every PHP version?
