Microsoft Teams does not have one switch that forces every link to open in the desktop app. The fix depends on what you are opening:
- Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files: change the file-opening preference in Teams or Microsoft 365.
- Teams meeting links: choose Join on the Teams app when prompted.
- Teams itself starting with Windows: disable Auto-start Teams. This does not change how links open.
Use the section below that matches the problem.
Make Office files open in the desktop app instead of the browser
This setting applies to supported Word, Excel, and PowerPoint links, usually files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint. It does not control ordinary website links, PDFs, images, or every attachment sent through Teams.
Change the preference in Teams for Windows
- Open the Teams desktop app.
- Select Settings and more (…) beside your profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- Open Files and links.
- Under Always open Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files in, select Desktop App.
After changing the setting, open a supported Office file link from a Teams chat again. You can instead choose Teams or Browser if those are more suitable for your workflow.

- Right-click the Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file link in Teams.
- Select Open in.
- Choose the required destination, such as Desktop App.
Change the preference from Word, Excel, or PowerPoint
The Microsoft 365 desktop apps have a separate file-opening preference that can override the Teams choice:
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- Select File > Options > Advanced.
- Find File open preference.
- Select Desktop.
- Select OK.
In Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or classic Outlook, you may also be able to right-click an eligible file link and select Set open default > Desktop.
If an Office file still opens in the browser
Selecting Desktop App is not a guarantee for every Teams file link. Check these conditions:

| The desktop program is missing | Install the relevant desktop version of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. |
| Unsupported storage | The file generally needs to be hosted on OneDrive or SharePoint. |
| Unsupported file or link | The preference is for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, not every attachment. Deep links to a comment, mention, slide, or another location inside a file may also behave differently. |
| Account or license limitation | The feature may require a supported subscription or commercial account. |
| Wrong Teams version | The setting applies to the Teams desktop app. A link opened from Teams for the web can continue in the browser. |
| Feature or version rollout | Your organization or installed Office version may not yet support the behavior. |
Some file links opened from Teams chats can still open in the browser even when the desktop preference is selected. That is a limitation of the supported link type, rather than proof that the setting was ignored.
Make Teams meeting links open in the desktop app
Meeting links are handled separately from Office file links. When you open a Teams meeting URL in a browser and Teams is installed, look for the choice between:

- Join on the Teams app — opens the desktop application.
- Continue on this browser — keeps the meeting in the browser.
Select Join on the Teams app. If the browser asks whether it may open Microsoft Teams, allow it and confirm the action if prompted.
Microsoft does not currently document a Teams setting that permanently forces every meeting hyperlink to use the desktop app. The documented choice is made at the meeting-join prompt.
When the Teams app does not open for a meeting
- Confirm that the Teams desktop app is installed.
- Open the meeting link again from the invitation.
- Select Join on the Teams app, not Continue on this browser.
- If no app option appears, update or reinstall Teams and retry.
For a meeting without a signed-in account, Microsoft supports browser joining through Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. The organizer or administrator may require email verification, a one-time passcode, or an authorized account. Those requirements can affect how you join, but they are not controlled by the Office file-opening setting.
An older invitation may display Join meeting now, while newer invitations may show the full meeting URL. The two formats use the same joining behavior.
Stop Teams from launching when Windows starts
If the actual problem is that Teams opens as soon as you sign in to Windows, disable its startup option:

- Open Teams.
- Select your profile picture.
- Select Settings and more (…) > Settings.
- Stay on General.
- In the System section, clear Auto-start Teams.
The same area includes options controlling whether Teams runs in the background or continues running after its window is closed. These options control application startup and background activity; they do not make links open in a browser or desktop app.
What the Teams setting does not change
Changing Settings > Files and links to Desktop App will not force all of the following into the Teams desktop app:
- Normal website URLs pasted into a chat.
- PDF files or image files.
- Links to services other than supported Microsoft 365 files.
- Every Teams meeting invitation.
- Links opened from Teams for the web.
There is no single Teams preference for all of these link types. Browser links are normally handled by the operating system and browser, while Office-file links and meeting links have their own Microsoft 365 behavior.

|---|---|
| Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file from a Teams chat | Teams: Settings and more (…) > Settings > Files and links > Desktop App. |

FAQ
Can I force every Teams link to open in the desktop app?
No. Teams separates Office file links, meeting links, and ordinary web URLs. Microsoft does not provide one setting that forces all link types into the desktop app.
Why does an Excel file still open in the browser after I select Desktop App?
The file may not be stored on OneDrive or SharePoint, Excel may not be installed, the account or Office version may not support the feature, or the link may be a deep link to a comment or other location. Some Teams-chat file links can also continue opening in the browser.

Does Auto-start Teams control where links open?
No. Auto-start Teams controls whether the app launches with Windows and related background behavior. It does not control browser-versus-app link handling.
How do I join a Teams meeting in the desktop app?
Open the meeting link and select Join on the Teams app. Selecting Continue on this browser deliberately keeps the meeting in the browser.
Can I make Teams meetings always open in the app?
Microsoft’s current support guidance documents the choice at the join prompt, but not a permanent setting that forces every meeting link to use the desktop app.
Does the Files and links setting apply to PDFs?
No. That preference specifically covers supported Word, Excel, and PowerPoint links. It does not control PDFs, images, ordinary websites, or every type of attachment.

The Bottom Line
For Office files, set Teams > Settings > Files and links > Always open Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files in > Desktop App. For meetings, select Join on the Teams app when the link opens. If Teams is launching unnecessarily at Windows startup, clear Auto-start Teams under Settings > General > System. These are separate controls, so changing one will not change the others.
