The supported way to control Microsoft Edge updates is an administrative Microsoft Edge Update policy. Edge’s ordinary Settings pages let you manage restart and update notifications, but they do not provide a permanent consumer switch that turns updating off. On a Windows device you administer, install Microsoft’s current Edge administrative templates, set the documented update policy through Group Policy or your device-management system, refresh the policy, and verify the result on Edge’s policy page.
Use a manual-update or controlled-deferral mode when possible. A complete block is the most disruptive option: Microsoft warns, “This isn’t recommended, as it prevents Microsoft Edge Update itself from receiving stability and security updates.”
What you can and cannot turn off
Microsoft separates the browser from the update mechanism that services it. The browser normally checks for and receives updates automatically, usually completing the installation when Edge is restarted. The regular Edge settings experience describes this behavior and restart controls, but it does not document a permanent, user-facing “never update” switch. Microsoft’s support explanation is that updates deliver “security, performance, and reliability” improvements. See Microsoft’s Edge update settings guidance for the consumer-facing behavior.
Persistent control is therefore an administrative task. Microsoft documents the supported policy surface in its Microsoft Edge Update policy reference, with configuration delivered by Group Policy, registry-based policy, or an organization’s device-management tooling. A policy can apply to one Windows computer or to many devices, depending on where it is configured.

If your computer belongs to an employer or school, its policy can override a local change. In that situation, the administrator who owns the device-management system must approve or implement the exception; changing local settings is not a reliable workaround.
Understand the four Microsoft Edge Update policy modes
The policy reference defines four values. The setting is an override for how updates are handled, not a promise that every Edge channel or future release will behave identically forever. Recheck the current policy reference when Edge is upgraded because names and management options can change.

Value 1 is Microsoft’s recommended choice. Values 2 and 3 reduce user interruption but retain some update path. Value 0 is the blanket block and carries the warning quoted above. Select the least restrictive mode that solves the actual problem rather than disabling the updater by default.

Before changing the policy
Identify who manages the computer
- Personally managed Windows PC: You can normally install the templates and set a local computer policy if you have administrator rights.
- Work or school PC: Domain Group Policy, mobile-device management, or another central system can overwrite local settings. Ask the administrator for a supported deferral or testing ring instead of fighting the central policy.
- Shared or kiosk device: Document the maintenance owner and a service window. A manual-update policy without an assigned owner can leave the browser unpatched indefinitely.
Define the reason and the end date
Write down the application, extension, site, or workflow that is incompatible with the current Edge release, the version that must be held, the devices affected, and the date on which testing will be reviewed. A temporary policy exception is easier to remove than an undocumented permanent block.

Plan a recovery path
Record the policy value, its scope (local computer, organizational unit, or management profile), the person who owns it, and the previous value. If a browser update is part of a wider change window, make sure you have a tested restore point or your organization’s normal system backup and recovery process before editing policy. Do not rely on a registry-cleaning utility or a service-blocking tool as a backup plan.
Set the supported policy with Microsoft administrative templates
The exact policy label and template files can change between Edge releases. Use the current template and policy names shown in Microsoft’s Configure Microsoft Edge for Windows with policy settings page and the linked update-policy reference, rather than copying an old registry file from an unrelated guide.
- Download the current template package. Open Microsoft’s configuration documentation and obtain the administrative template version that matches the Edge release and Windows management method you use.
- Install the template files. Copy the ADMX and corresponding language ADML files to the local policy template location or to your organization’s Central Store, following Microsoft’s template-installation instructions. A Central Store is preferable when several administrators must see one approved policy definition.
- Open the policy editor. On a local Windows installation, open Local Group Policy Editor with an administrator account. In a domain, open the Group Policy Management tools and edit the Group Policy Object that should apply to the target computers.
- Go to the Edge Update policy area. Browse to the Microsoft Edge Update administrative-template section under Computer Configuration. The update-policy reference identifies the policy and the four numeric values; use that reference if the label in your template differs.
- Select the required mode. Choose the least restrictive value that meets the compatibility requirement: 2 for administrator-triggered checks, 3 for background-only checks, or 0 only for a documented full block. Leave the setting at the recommended allow-updates value when no exception is needed.
- Apply the policy at the correct scope. A computer policy affects all users of that computer. In a domain or device-management system, link or assign it only to the test devices or organizational unit that needs it. Avoid a tenant-wide change for a single application issue.
- Refresh and restart. Force or wait for the normal Group Policy/device-management refresh, then close and restart Edge. A browser that was already running may continue using its previous policy state until it restarts.
- Verify the effective setting. In Edge, open the policy page at
edge://policy, refresh the page, and confirm that the update policy appears with the expected value and source. If it is missing or shows a different source, the policy did not reach that device or another management layer has precedence.
Do not assume that a successful edit in the local editor means the policy is effective. The policy page is the check that matters on the endpoint, while the management console or Group Policy reporting tools show where the setting came from.
Using registry or device-management tooling
Microsoft supports deploying the same Edge policies through documented registry and device-management channels. The safe approach is to use the policy definition and data type in the current Microsoft reference, then let your management platform create the configuration. This avoids guessing at key names, registry hives, or JSON schemas that may differ by release.

Registry deployment
For a single managed computer, an administrator can apply the documented policy in the registry using the exact path and value shown in Microsoft’s policy reference. Export the existing policy branch first, record the previous value, and make one controlled change. After the policy refresh and an Edge restart, check edge://policy. If the policy is not listed, the path, value type, or scope is wrong, or a higher-precedence policy is overriding it.
Device-management deployment
For many devices, configure the Edge Update policy in your organization’s management profile using Microsoft’s published policy schema. Target a pilot group, set an assignment or filter that limits the scope, and monitor policy-receipt status before expanding it. Keep the policy owner and review date in the profile description or change record so another administrator can remove the exception.
Do not mix a centrally managed policy with ad hoc local registry edits. Central management can overwrite the local value at the next synchronization, creating the impression that Edge is “ignoring” the setting.

How to tell whether Edge is still updating
Check the effective policy, not just the Settings page
The Settings page is not a reliable proof that an administrative update policy is active. Open edge://policy, refresh it after policy synchronization, and look for the update policy and its source. A value of 0, 2, or 3 should match the mode you selected. If the page reports a policy from a domain, cloud-management service, or another source, that source has to be changed by its owner.

Distinguish an update check from an installed update
Periodic checks can occur without an immediately visible browser restart. A mode that permits silent or manual updates does not mean Edge will display a prompt for every check. Compare the installed Edge version before and after a planned maintenance window, and record the check date and policy value. Avoid inferring a policy failure solely from a notification or from Edge restarting after a different update was already staged.
Test on one device first
Use a noncritical test computer or pilot group. Confirm the policy, restart Edge, perform the workflow that motivated the exception, and verify whether the browser remains stable. Then decide whether to retain the mode, move to a newer Edge build, or remove the exception.

A higher-priority organization policy is winning
Domain Group Policy, cloud-management profiles, or security baselines can override a local setting. The effective policy page normally identifies that the setting is managed and can help your administrator trace the source. Ask for the central policy owner rather than repeatedly changing the local machine.

The policy was applied to the wrong scope
A user-scoped setting will not necessarily control computer-level updating, and a policy assigned to one organizational unit will not affect a device in another. Confirm that the target computer received the policy and that the template was installed in the store used by the editor.

The policy did not refresh or Edge was not restarted
Administrative changes are not always immediate. Wait for or initiate the normal policy refresh, then restart Edge and refresh edge://policy. If the policy is still absent, review management synchronization and event or reporting data for that device.
You changed a browser preference instead of the update policy
Options that control update notifications, restart timing, or metered-network downloads do not permanently disable the Edge Update process. A metered connection can change when update files are downloaded, but it is a bandwidth behavior, not a supported permanent-off switch.
A servicing operation restored an unsupported change
Deleting update services, disabling scheduled tasks, or making an undocumented registry edit can be undone by Windows or Edge servicing. Such tactics can also leave the installation in an unsupported state. Replace them with the documented policy, then restore normal servicing before removing the exception.

Safer ways to handle compatibility problems
Prefer manual updates for a short test window
If a release breaks a business workflow, value 2 can pause automatic application while an administrator tests the workflow. Assign a person to check for the approved update, document the result, and remove the exception promptly. This is safer than leaving value 0 in place with no owner.
Use a controlled deployment process
Organizations that need validation should use pilot devices, staged assignments, and a defined approval gate. Keep normal automatic updating on devices outside the pilot. A staged process limits the number of machines exposed to a compatibility defect without turning off security maintenance everywhere.
Work with the application owner
Capture the Edge version, operating-system version, affected site or extension, and reproducible steps. Give that information to the application or web-site owner while the test policy is active. The goal is to correct the incompatibility or move to a supported Edge build, not to make an indefinite exception permanent.
Restore normal automatic updating
- Open the same Group Policy, registry-policy, or device-management profile that created the exception.
- Set the Edge Update policy back to the recommended allow-updates value, or remove the policy so the approved parent policy applies.
- Refresh policy and restart Edge.
- Open
edge://policyand confirm that the old override is gone or now reports the normal value and source. - Check the installed Edge version during the next approved maintenance window and close the change record with the restoration date.
If the old value returns, a central profile, domain policy, or configuration-management script is reapplying it. Find and change that source; repeatedly editing the endpoint will not solve the precedence problem.
