First work out whether buffering is happening to you as a viewer or to the stream you are broadcasting. If you are broadcasting, check OBS’s dropped frames and connection indicator, then compare your stream bitrate with your stable upload capacity. If you are watching, try Auto quality, another stream, and another device or connection. A problem affecting one viewer does not automatically mean the broadcaster’s stream is broken.

Find where the buffering starts

Live video travels through several links: the broadcaster’s encoder and upload connection, the streaming platform’s processing and delivery, the viewer’s home network or mobile carrier, and the playback device. A fault or limitation at any point can interrupt playback. Twitch’s official troubleshooting guidance describes these possible causes, so use comparisons and status indicators to narrow the problem before changing settings.

  • Only your broadcast is affected: inspect the broadcaster’s encoder, upload path, and platform stream-health messages.
  • Only one viewer reports buffering: the viewer’s connection, device, or playback quality may be responsible; it does not prove the broadcast is faulty.
  • Several streams or services buffer on the same device or network: investigate the viewer’s network, ISP, or device as well as possible service delivery issues.

If you are broadcasting: diagnose the upload and encoder

1. Check OBS while the problem is happening

In OBS, watch the dropped-frame count and connection indicator during the stream. OBS says increasing dropped frames with a yellow or red connection status means the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing, so the counter and indicator are useful clues—not just a visual quality score.

2. Match bitrate to stable upload capacity

Compare your configured streaming bitrate with the upload speed you can sustain, rather than relying on your advertised download speed. Twitch’s general guidance is to have upload speed equal to the stream bitrate plus 30%; its example is a 6 Mbps stream bitrate with at least 8 Mbps upload. This is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: speed-test results can vary, and other devices or apps using upload bandwidth reduce what is available to your stream.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube recommends testing your upload bitrate with a speed test. Test under conditions representative of your actual stream, and avoid competing uploads where possible.

3. Reduce settings only if the connection cannot sustain them

If dropped frames rise and the upload connection cannot reliably keep up, lower the video bitrate. If needed, also reduce resolution or frame rate so the stream fits both your stable connection and the destination platform’s current recommendations. Twitch advises balancing internet speed, computer hardware, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single setting that suits every broadcaster.

Do not change several settings at once unless you must recover a live event immediately. A single change followed by another representative test makes it easier to tell whether the bottleneck was bitrate, connection stability, or encoding performance. Platform recommendations can change, so consult the destination’s current encoder guidance before settling on exact output values.

4. Test the network path

If you are broadcasting over Wi-Fi, try a direct Ethernet connection as a diagnostic test. A wired connection can help distinguish a wireless problem from other causes, but it is not a guaranteed cure. If upload performance remains inadequate, Cloudflare’s live-stream troubleshooting suggests restarting the router or contacting your ISP. These steps test the network path; they do not establish that the router or Wi-Fi is always at fault.

5. Separate connection trouble from computer performance

If OBS’s connection indicators look healthy but the stream still stutters or performs poorly, check OBS’s encoding and rendering performance guidance. Reduce system or encoder load as appropriate. A connection problem and a computer struggling to render or encode are different failure modes and need different fixes.

6. Test before the event and monitor stream health

Run a test stream before going live to an audience. YouTube recommends using audio and movement similar to the real event, then monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast. A static test may not expose problems that appear with a busy scene, motion, or full audio workload.

If you are watching: test playback, device, and connection

Start with Auto quality

Choose Auto quality where it is available, especially on a changing or limited connection. Twitch says Auto adjusts playback quality to current network conditions. Manually forcing a quality your connection cannot sustain can make buffering worse.

Compare another stream, device, and network

Try another live stream. If only one channel buffers, the broadcaster’s upload or encoder settings may be involved; if multiple streams or services buffer, look more closely at your device, home network, ISP, or service delivery. This comparison narrows the possibilities but does not prove a single cause.

Try playback on another device or connection if available. If video works on Wi-Fi but not mobile data, check whether your carrier restricts streaming. Twitch notes that mobile carrier streaming limits can affect playback; YouTube recommends Wi-Fi when viewers have problems over a mobile network.

Use speed recommendations as guidance, not guarantees

YouTube Help recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. Twitch’s official playback troubleshooting page lists these recommended download speeds for viewing particular qualities; the page does not state a publication year:

Playback quality Twitch recommended download speed
1080p60 7–12 Mbps
720p60 3–6 Mbps
480p 1.1–3 Mbps
360p 0.7–1.5 Mbps

These are service-specific recommendations, not universal thresholds or promises of uninterrupted playback. Actual results depend on the stream, network conditions, device, and other use of the connection.
