You can reduce the time spent prompting, approving, and checking coding agents by treating their work as a controlled engineering workflow—not as a series of unsupervised guesses. Define the task and acceptance checks up front, isolate changes, block progress on failed tests, and have someone or something other than the implementing agent review the result. Keep human approval at the points where risk matters.
Why coding agents need a workflow around them
Coding agents can produce code quickly, but speed does not mean they can reliably decide what should be built, how much of a repository to change, or when a result is safe to merge. Software engineer Aman Tahiliani puts the distinction plainly: “Coding agents are good at writing code and bad at deciding what to write.” His account describes a pipeline built around a specification, an isolated workspace, a build gate, and a reviewer other than the agent that wrote the code. Tahiliani’s account is a practitioner’s description, not an independently audited evaluation or proof of a general productivity improvement.
The practical goal is not to remove every human decision. It is to make routine work proceed without constant intervention while preserving clear checkpoints for scope and quality.
Make the task testable before the agent starts
Write down the requested outcome before implementation. A useful specification tells the agent what behavior should change, what must remain unchanged, and how to verify the result. Avoid broad instructions such as “clean up this module” unless you also define the intended scope and acceptance criteria.

- A Thoughtful Gift for Programmers: Ideal for developers, computer science majors, or IT coworkers who’ll appreciate clever visuals and inside jokes only true coders understand
- Outcome: Describe the observable behavior or deliverable, not just the coding activity.
- Scope: Identify relevant files or areas and note what the agent should not modify.
- Acceptance checks: State the tests, build, or other evidence required for completion.
- Constraints: Include compatibility, security, or interface requirements that matter to the task.
A specification cannot anticipate every implementation detail. Its value is that it gives the agent and reviewer a shared standard for deciding whether the change is complete.
Isolate work so mistakes stay contained
Run agent tasks in a separate workspace rather than letting several jobs edit the same working tree. Tahiliani describes using worktrees across multiple repositories; the broader principle is to reduce collisions and make it clear which changes belong to which task. Isolation also makes it easier to discard or inspect a failed attempt without confusing it with unrelated local work.

- 👉 EASY WRAP-AND-PRESS APPLICATION: For best results, clean and dry the surface before applying. Carefully align the decal before pressing, as UV DTF transfer decals are not designed to be lifted, repositioned, or reused after contact. Press firmly and evenly, then slowly peel away the carrier sheet.
- 👉 VERSATILE DECOR & CREATIVE GIFT: Perfectly sized at 5x5 cm (approx. 25 cm² each). Safely adheres to hard, smooth surfaces including metal, plastic, glass, and wood. Ideal for custom styling laptops, water bottles, tablets, car bumpers, luggage, and skateboards. Makes a fantastic, creative gift for coworkers and tech friends.
Choose the isolation boundary to match the task. A small change may need only its own branch or worktree. Work spanning repositories needs a plan for coordinating those repositories and validating the combined result; separate workspaces alone do not guarantee that cross-repository changes are compatible.

Set checks that must pass before an agent’s output moves to the next stage. In Tahiliani’s account, a build must pass before a change earns a pull request, and one project also uses a browser-test gate. These are examples from his setup, not evidence that a particular gate will catch every defect.

- Run the relevant checks. Choose tests and build steps that exercise the behavior in the specification.
- Block progression on failure. A failed check should stop the workflow and surface the error rather than silently produce a completion notice.
- Show the evidence. Report which checks ran and whether they passed, failed, or could not run.
- Keep a human decision where needed. A green build is evidence, not automatic authorization to merge or deploy.
Tests are most useful when they are connected to the task’s acceptance criteria. A passing unrelated test suite does not establish that the requested behavior works.
Separate implementation from review
Have a reviewer distinct from the implementing agent inspect the change. Tahiliani says the reviewer in his pipeline is never the agent that wrote the code. That separation reduces the risk of asking one agent to validate its own assumptions, but it does not establish that the review is accurate or independent in every meaningful sense.

If tasks run while you are away, the system needs to tell you what happened and stop when it cannot make progress. In a personal account published on 8 April 2026, Sam French describes a queue-based setup that records task state, runs an agent, pushes commits when present, records completion or failure, and emails results. He also describes exponential backoff, capped cooldowns, and an alert after five consecutive failures. These are details of his own configuration, not universal defaults or a recommendation to use those exact thresholds. French’s account also reports a misconfigured repository triggering 47 failed re-queues in four minutes—an example of why retries need limits and a stop condition.

- Expose task state: Make queued, running, completed, and failed work distinguishable.
- Detect meaningful completion: Do not treat an empty run or missing commit as success without explaining the outcome.
- Bound retries: Use backoff and a maximum retry or cooldown policy so a broken task cannot loop indefinitely.
- Escalate repeated failure: Notify a person and stop or quarantine the task after a defined failure threshold.
- Keep an audit trail: Preserve the task request, output, check results, and any commit or pull request created.
French also reports waking to six commits from his self-queuing system. That anecdote illustrates the potential for unattended throughput; it does not establish that unattended operation is safe for every codebase or task.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide what remains a human checkpoint
A useful division is to automate repeatable execution and preserve human judgment around scope, risk, and release. Tahiliani describes two human gates with unattended work between them, but the account does not specify a universal gate policy. Choose checkpoints based on the consequences of an error.
- Before work: Confirm the request and acceptance criteria when the task is ambiguous or high impact.
- Before review or merge: Inspect changes that affect security, data handling, public interfaces, or production behavior.
- After failure: Decide whether to revise the task, fix the environment, or abandon the run instead of allowing repeated retries.
For low-risk, well-tested changes, fewer interruptions may be reasonable. For changes with significant operational or user impact, automation should provide evidence to a human decision-maker rather than bypass one.
A practical rollout sequence
- Start with one recurring task type. Choose work with clear boundaries and checks rather than handing an agent broad ownership of a repository.
- Write a reusable task specification. Include expected behavior, scope, constraints, and completion evidence.
- Run it in an isolated workspace. Ensure concurrent work cannot overwrite or blur the task’s changes.
- Require checks before progression. Fail closed when required tests or builds do not pass.
- Add independent review and status reporting. Make the resulting change and its evidence easy to inspect.
- Set retry and stop rules before unattended runs. Test failure handling with a deliberately invalid task or environment before relying on background execution.
Neither practitioner account supplies a controlled comparison showing how much time these practices save or how often they prevent defects. The supported takeaway is narrower and more useful: a coding agent becomes less demanding to supervise when its task, workspace, checks, review, and failure behavior are designed as parts of one workflow.
