How do I stop audio echo? First, make sure Google Meet is using the microphone and speaker you intend, then lower speaker volume or try headphones or a headset with a microphone. If Meet flags an echo, follow its in-meeting troubleshooting prompt; Meet says it automatically tries to fix echo.
Why audio echo happens in a meeting
A common meeting echo occurs when sound from a speaker is picked up again by an open microphone. Google Meet warns that using mismatched microphone and external speaker devices might cause echo. The device you have plugged in is not necessarily the device Meet has selected, so check the app’s input and output settings rather than relying on the physical connection alone.
These steps address echo during video meetings. They do not establish how to diagnose room-acoustic echo in a studio recording or which acoustic treatments would work in a particular space.
Check the microphone and speaker Meet is using
- Open Meet’s device settings. In a meeting, open the audio settings and inspect the selected microphone and speakers. Choose the intended devices for both input and output.
- Test the devices. Use Meet’s microphone and speaker tests when available. Confirm that the microphone registers your voice and that the test sound comes from the intended speaker or headset.
- Check again after switching devices. If you connect or disconnect a headset, verify that Meet has selected it rather than continuing to use the laptop microphone or speakers.

Reduce speaker sound reaching the microphone
- Try headphones or a headset with a microphone. This can reduce the chance that speaker output is picked up by an open microphone. It is a useful test, not a guaranteed fix for every audio problem.
- Lower speaker volume. If you are using speakers, turn them down and check whether the echo changes.
- Mute when you are not speaking. This prevents your open microphone from transmitting while you are listening.

Respond to a Meet echo warning
If Meet displays an echo warning or troubleshooting prompt, follow its instructions in the meeting. Google says Meet automatically tries to fix echo. If the warning or echo continues, check the selected microphone and speaker, then try the volume and headset steps above.

For persistent poor audio, Google also recommends checking the selected devices and trying a headset with a microphone. It notes that some Bluetooth headsets that work well for ordinary audio calls may work poorly with Meet. That is a compatibility caveat for some headsets, not evidence that Bluetooth always causes echo. See Fix audio issues in Google Meet – Computer.
If several laptops are in the same room
When multiple laptops are active together in one room, their microphones and speakers can complicate meeting audio. For eligible setups, Google Meet’s Adaptive Audio combines microphones and speakers from laptops in the room. Availability is subject to subscription and hardware restrictions; check Google’s current Adaptive Audio in Meet guidance for eligibility and setup details.

Google’s documentation cautions that turning Adaptive Audio off may cause echo or a howling noise. If the feature is available and in use, avoid switching it off as an echo fix without checking that guidance.

If checking Meet’s selected devices, reducing speaker volume, and using a headset do not resolve the issue, compare with another headset or device. This helps determine whether the problem follows a particular peripheral or setup. Also check that the relevant audio device is available to Meet and that its settings and permissions allow it to work.
