For visual regression tests, toHaveScreenshot() already disables animations by default and waits for two consecutive screenshots to match. This makes animation-driven captures more stable, but it does not guarantee identical pixels across machines or mean the page has reached the state your test intends to check.
Disable animations in Playwright screenshots
Set animations: 'disabled' on a one-off screenshot or screenshot assertion. Playwright documents that this affects CSS animations, CSS transitions, and Web Animations during capture.

Know which animation state you will capture
Disabling animations does not always freeze an animation at its current frame. Finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion, which fires transitionend; the screenshot may therefore show the final state. Infinite animations are canceled at their initial state for the screenshot and resumed afterward. If the screenshot must show a particular state, trigger it deliberately and assert that state before capture.

Screenshot assertions wait for visual stability
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() takes screenshots until two consecutive images match, then compares the last image to the expected baseline. Screenshot assertions disable animations by default. This retry-until-stable behavior helps with transient visual changes, but it does not prove that application data or UI has reached the semantically correct state.
Wait for the intended page state
Animation suppression and visual stability are not substitutes for page readiness. A page can stop moving while data is still loading, an image or font has not appeared, or an asynchronous update is pending. Wait for an application-specific readiness signal and assert the content or UI state that matters before capture. Prefer a meaningful condition—such as a visible element or expected text—over an arbitrary delay where possible.

Make the baseline environment reproducible
Disabling motion cannot eliminate every rendering difference. Playwright identifies host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as factors that can change screenshots. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment, keeping the browser build, OS, viewport, settings, and execution mode consistent. Playwright’s visual comparisons guide recommends running tests in the environment where the baselines were generated.
Handle changing regions without hiding real defects
Some screenshot changes are content volatility rather than animation: a timestamp, live counter, rotating promotion, or ad may differ between captures. Playwright screenshot options include style and stylePath for applying styles that filter volatile elements, including elements in shadow DOM and inner frames. A mask is another option when the changing area should be covered rather than restyled; check the current assertion documentation for its exact options.

Keep exclusions narrow and limited to content outside the visual contract. Hiding a whole panel may make the test pass while concealing a genuine layout or rendering regression in that panel. Where the content itself matters, assert its behavior or normalize it to a known value rather than masking it.
Reduced motion is a separate accessibility check
The prefers-reduced-motion: reduce media feature lets a site respond to a user’s request for less motion. It is useful to test that accessibility behavior, but it is not the same as Playwright’s capture-time animation control and does not by itself guarantee suppression of JavaScript-driven animation or every Web Animations API effect.

}This is an implementation pattern, not a required W3C recipe. Check that state changes remain understandable and test the site’s actual reduced-motion behavior. Chrome DevTools can emulate the preference in its Rendering tools; see Chrome’s CSS media feature emulation guide. W3C WAI describes its C39 technique as an example rather than a mandatory conformance requirement.

Framework support is not interchangeable
The documented animations: 'disabled' setting above is a Playwright API option. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide covers page and element screenshots, but does not establish an equivalent animation-disable option. Do not assume Playwright’s option works in Puppeteer or another framework; verify the current documentation for the runner and version you use. Puppeteer’s guide is at Screenshots.
Troubleshooting inconsistent captures
- The screenshot shows an animation’s end state. Playwright fast-forwards finite animations when animations are disabled. Trigger and assert the desired UI state before capture, or choose a capture point that matches what the test is meant to verify.
- The screenshot still changes despite disabled animations. Check for pending data, fonts, images, asynchronous updates, clocks, ads, counters, and other volatile content. Wait for the relevant readiness condition and normalize or narrowly exclude only content that is outside the test’s purpose.
- The same page differs between local and CI. Compare OS, browser version, settings, viewport, hardware or execution mode, and headless configuration. Align the environment with the one used to generate the baseline.
- A screenshot assertion is stable but tests the wrong state. Add assertions for the semantic state and content expected before capture; consecutive matching pixels alone do not establish correctness.
- The setting appears ineffective in another tool. Confirm that the tool and API version document the option you are using. Playwright-specific settings should not be copied into Puppeteer or another runner without verification.
