To stop an AI assistant from carrying details about friends or family into future answers, turn off its memory or personalization feature. To remove information already retained, delete the saved memory and the conversation or activity where it came from; check connected apps and uploaded files too. These are separate controls: switching off memory does not necessarily erase old content or opt you out of model improvement.
First, understand what “saving” can mean
AI services can handle the same detail in several ways. Memory or personalization lets information from earlier interactions influence future responses. Chat history or activity keeps a record of conversations. Model-improvement settings govern a separate use of data. Deleting one record or changing one setting does not automatically change the others.
For a thorough cleanup, identify every place the information may exist: a saved memory or profile entry, the original conversation, activity history, an uploaded file, or a connected app. Then change the setting that controls future personalization and delete the existing copies you can locate.
ChatGPT: turn off memory and remove existing details
Stop future personalization
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Review saved memories and any memory summary shown for your account.
- Turn off the available saved-memory and chat-history reference controls. Labels and availability can vary by account and interface.
- If you turn off Reference chat history, OpenAI says information derived from past chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days. This does not delete the original chats from your history. Turning memory off also does not, by itself, delete separate saved memories. See OpenAI’s Memory FAQ.
Delete what is already there
- Delete the relevant saved memory or information in the memory summary.
- Delete the conversation where the details were shared. Check archived as well as regular chats.
- Check uploaded files in Library and connected apps for copies of the same information, and remove them where appropriate.
Deleting a chat alone may leave a separately saved memory intact. OpenAI’s guidance describes these as distinct locations, so check each rather than assuming one deletion covers all copies: Memory FAQ.

Use Temporary Chat for a sensitive new discussion
Start a Temporary Chat and turn personalization off before beginning if you do not want existing memories used. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history, create or update memories, or train its models. They may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Saving a Temporary Chat converts it into a regular chat. Details are in OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ.
Opt out of model improvement separately
To change whether new conversations may be used to improve models, open Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone and turn it off. This setting does not delete or hide saved chats, and new conversations may still appear in chat history. OpenAI’s privacy guidance also cautions: “Users should not share sensitive information in ChatGPT that they wouldn’t want to be used or reviewed.” See OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ and how OpenAI uses data to improve model performance.

Gemini: check Memory, Saved Info, and activity separately
Stop using past chats for personalization
Turn off Memory in Gemini’s Personal Intelligence settings. Google’s instructions include web and mobile steps, but menus can vary by app version. Consult Google’s Gemini personalization help for the current path shown for your device.

Delete conversations and review other sources
- Delete conversations containing the details from Gemini Apps Activity. Google says it may take a short time for a deleted chat to stop being used for personalization.
- Review Saved Info or instructions separately; Google says these persist until you delete them and provides a way to stop saving them.
- If a connected app supplied the information, delete matching chats and disconnect that app. Deleting activity alone may not remove information still available through a connected source.
Gemini’s controls do not change settings for other Google services. Google’s Gemini Apps Activity help explains activity management.

Know what activity deletion and Keep Activity off do
For personal accounts, Keep Activity can be switched off, or used with Turn off and delete activity. With Keep Activity off, conversations may still be associated with the account for up to 72 hours for service delivery and feedback; some connected features are restricted. Google says Gemini Apps Activity is set to auto-delete after 18 months by default, with options for 3 months, 36 months, or no auto-delete. Chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years and are not deleted when you delete activity. These are Google’s published retention periods, not independent measurements. See the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
Google warns in that Privacy Hub: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.”

Claude: inspect memory entries, not just conversations
Edit, delete, pause, or reset memory
In the current memory experience, open Settings > Memory to review topics, edit or delete entries, and turn memory or past-chat search off. Some accounts may show legacy controls under Settings > Capabilities; organization-managed plans may have settings controlled by an administrator. Anthropic describes the current controls in its memory management help.

- Incognito chat: is not saved to memory or chat history.
Deleting a conversation does not necessarily remove related memory entries; delete those separately if you want them gone.

Separate conversation deletion from training settings
Anthropic says consumer conversations deleted from history are removed from visible history immediately and automatically deleted from backend systems within 30 days. Its model-improvement setting is separate: turning it off stops new chats from being used for future training, but does not undo training already in progress or affect models already trained. Prevent the detail from being retained in the first place
- Use a role or placeholder such as “my sibling” or “a friend” instead of a name.
- Leave out addresses, contact details, private messages, and identifying or sensitive specifics that are not needed to answer your question.
