First identify whether frames are being lost while your computer encodes the videos or while the stream travels to YouTube. If the encoder preview or local recording is already choppy, reduce the computer’s workload. If those look smooth but OBS reports connection-related drops, check upload capacity and stability. When multiple streams are going out, count all of their bitrates against your available upload and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.

Find out where the frames are being lost

“Dropped frames” can describe different problems. OBS uses connection-related dropped frames for cases where the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Choppy local output, encoder warnings, or high processing load instead point toward rendering or encoding performance. Check YouTube Live Control Room stream health alongside OBS statistics and messages, the encoder preview, any local recording, and CPU/GPU load. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking encoder output, CPU load, the local archive, and outbound internet connectivity (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream; OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

  • Local preview or recording is choppy: investigate encoding or rendering load, source media, and settings.
  • Local output is smooth but frames drop while sending: investigate upload capacity, connection stability, and the path to YouTube’s ingest server.
  • Both symptoms appear: address each bottleneck separately; lowering bitrate does not fix overloaded encoding, and a faster encoder does not fix an unstable upload.

Check upload capacity for every outgoing stream

Measure upload performance under conditions similar to the live session, then compare sustained available upload with the combined bitrate of every stream your setup sends. Include a primary and backup stream: both use outbound bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).

  1. List the configured bitrate for each outgoing stream.
  2. Add those bitrates together, including a backup output if you use one.
  3. Check upload performance while other people and applications that share the connection are active, if that reflects your normal streaming conditions.
  4. If the available upload cannot sustain the total with headroom, reduce one or more stream bitrates, resolutions, or frame rates until it can.

If the computer uses Wi-Fi and the connection is unstable, a wired Ethernet connection to the router may help. It cannot solve encoder overload, and it is not a guaranteed fix for problems with the ISP, router, or route to YouTube. Avoid buying networking or encoding hardware until the counters and tests indicate which resource is failing.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Reduce local encoding and rendering load

Transcoding several videos at once competes for finite CPU and GPU resources. Scene composition, games, and other GPU-intensive work can add to the load. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it shifts encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component, but image quality at a given bitrate varies by encoder generation. Confirm that the GPU and driver support the encoder you select (OBS: Hardware Encoding).

  • Pause unnecessary encoding jobs and close applications doing intensive CPU or GPU work.
  • Reduce the number of simultaneous transcodes if the machine cannot sustain them.
  • Simplify scenes and avoid running an uncapped game or other demanding GPU work alongside multiple encodes.
  • Lower the output resolution or frame rate where necessary.
  • Try a supported hardware encoder when CPU encoding is the bottleneck; check GPU and driver compatibility first.
  • If the GPU is already saturated, reduce competing GPU work and rendering load too. Hardware encoding does not eliminate the GPU resources needed to render and composite scenes.

OBS documents performance troubleshooting for encoding and GPU rendering separately; use its steps to investigate the local workload rather than assuming that changing encoders will fix every kind of stutter (OBS: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting).

Match YouTube’s settings to the actual output

Use YouTube’s published settings as a starting point for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. The following are YouTube Help recommended bitrate figures; they are ingestion guidance, not a measurement of your connection’s capacity. The reviewed settings page does not state a publication year (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Output Codec YouTube-recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps H.264 17 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 12 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps H.264 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps H.264 8 Mbps

YouTube’s documented live workflow lists RTMP/RTMPS and the H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 codecs. It calls for constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds; it supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Check YouTube’s settings page for the complete guidance and the bitrate row for your exact codec and output. For example, 17 Mbps applies to 1080p at 60 fps using H.264; it is not a universal bitrate for other formats.

If the computer can encode smoothly but the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate across all outputs, lower the outgoing load. If the connection has capacity but local encoding or rendering is failing, reduce local workload or output demands instead. A high bitrate cannot compensate for an overloaded encoder, and a lower bitrate cannot restore frames already lost to local processing.

Test before the next live session

Run a test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, then check YouTube stream health and encoder messages. YouTube recommends testing under representative conditions and monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Common symptoms and fixes

Symptom Likely area to investigate Next step
OBS reports dropped frames while the local preview and recording look smooth Connection to YouTube’s ingest server Compare total outgoing bitrate with sustained upload; account for backup streams and leave 20% headroom.
Preview or local recording is choppy, or encoder warnings appear Encoding or rendering performance Reduce concurrent jobs and competing CPU/GPU work; lower output demands or test a supported hardware encoder if CPU load is the issue.
Connection drops begin when another stream or backup is enabled Combined upload demand Count the bitrate of every output and reduce the total if available upload is insufficient.
Changing encoder improves CPU use but stutter remains GPU rendering or another bottleneck Check GPU load, scene complexity, and competing applications; hardware encoding does not remove rendering demand.
Wired connection does not resolve connection-related drops Upload capacity, router, ISP, or ingest route Retest sustained upload and total bitrate; Ethernet alone does not establish or fix the cause.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel rather than transcode several videos on your own computer, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
