Change the display’s screen-blanking timeout in your desktop environment, and leave automatic suspend enabled. In GNOME, open Activities, search for Power, then change Screen Blank under Power Saving Options. You can choose a longer interval or disable screen blanking while retaining the existing suspend behavior.
Screen blanking and system suspend are separate settings
Screen blanking turns off or dims the display after inactivity; automatic suspend puts the computer to sleep. Screen locking is another behavior, and closing a laptop lid or pressing a sleep key can trigger a separate power action. If the display goes dark but the computer remains awake, start with the desktop’s display or screen-off setting—not a global suspend setting.
Change the screen timeout in GNOME
- Open Activities and search for Power.
- Open the Power panel.
- Under Power Saving Options, change Screen Blank to a longer interval or disable blanking.
- Leave Automatic Suspend and its current timeout and action unchanged if you want the computer to keep suspending when idle.

Do not change the idle action by mistake
GNOME’s idle timeout and idle action are distinct from the Screen Blank timeout. Administrative settings can specify separate idle timeouts and actions for AC power and battery. Available actions include blanking, suspending, shutting down, hibernating, prompting interactively, doing nothing, or logging out. Those choices determine what the system does on idle; they are not the display’s blanking timer. GNOME system administration guide: Power

Other desktop environments
KDE Plasma
Open System Settings → Power Management and adjust the display or screen-off behavior while keeping the desired suspend action enabled. The available controls and labels vary by Plasma release and power profile; KDE documentation describes a control to turn off the display backlight, but do not assume every release uses identical wording. Xfce
Use Xfce Power Manager to review display and system power settings. Menu paths and labels depend on the installed version, so check that version’s settings rather than following a path intended for a different release. Xfce Power Manager documentation

Choose the setting that matches what is happening
- Display goes dark while the computer stays awake: Change the desktop environment’s screen blanking or display-off timeout.
- The computer sleeps after inactivity: Review automatic suspend separately; leave it enabled if suspend should continue.
- The computer sleeps when you close the lid or press a power or sleep key: Review the action assigned to that event.
systemd-logindoptions such asHandleLidSwitch=concern supported lid and key events, not the normal desktop idle-display timeout. systemd-logind configuration - The screen locks but remains lit or goes dark after locking: Check screen-lock and display power settings separately; changing the blanking timeout alone does not necessarily change locking behavior.
If the display stays on while plugged in but blanks on battery, check for separate power-profile or AC-versus-battery values before changing the timeout. GNOME’s administrative idle settings can define different values for each power source.

systemd-inhibit --what=idle:sleep COMMAND can hold idle and sleep inhibitors while COMMAND runs. Because it can block sleep as well as idle handling, it is not the right persistent display-only solution when the computer should remain able to suspend. systemd-inhibit manual

GNOME session inhibition can also prevent the session from going idle during a running command. That is useful for temporary activity, not a replacement for configuring the normal screen-blank timeout. GNOME SessionManager interface
