There is no single documented cancel command for every translation app. If a language download is still in progress, look for an explicit cancel option in the app or the device’s download interface; the official instructions covered here do not confirm a universal way to interrupt it. If the download has finished, you can remove the offline language package using the app’s settings. Those are different actions.
This guide covers Google Translate on Android and iPhone or iPad, Apple Translate on iPhone or iPad, and Microsoft Translator on Android. Menu names can change with app and operating-system updates, so check the labels shown on your device.
First, identify what you need to stop
“Stop a language download” can mean one of three things. Choosing the right action matters because removing a finished offline package is not the same as cancelling a transfer that is still underway.

- Cancel a transfer in progress: Look for an explicit cancel control in the app or the operating system’s download interface. The official instructions below do not establish a general cancellation procedure.
- Remove a completed download: Use the app’s Remove or Delete control for the offline language package.
- Prevent future downloads over mobile data: Google Translate for Android has data-use preferences for managing downloads that are not on Wi-Fi.
Do not assume that closing the app, disconnecting from the network, or deleting a language package will cancel an active transfer. The cited help pages do not establish those as reliable cancellation methods.

Google Translate on Android
Remove a language that has finished downloading
- Open Google Translate.
- Tap Menu, then Downloaded languages.
- Find the language and tap Remove.
- Confirm removal.
This removes the offline package; Google’s instructions do not describe it as a way to interrupt a download that is still in progress. See Google Translate Help: Download languages to use offline.
Manage future downloads that use mobile data
To manage whether Google Translate downloads languages without Wi-Fi, open Menu > Settings > Data usage > Downloaded languages. Choose Ask before downloading or Use Wi-Fi or mobile network, as appropriate for the options shown in your current app version. These preferences help control future downloads; they are not documented as an in-progress cancel command. Google Translate Help recommends downloading languages only while connected to Wi-Fi to avoid slow downloads or additional data-use charges. See Google Translate Help.

Google Translate on iPhone or iPad
Remove a completed offline language
- Open Google Translate.
- Tap Settings > Offline translation.
- Find the language and tap Remove.
- Confirm removal of the offline package.
Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions cover removing a package, not cancelling a transfer that is underway. Google also recommends downloading over Wi-Fi to avoid slow downloads or additional data-use charges. See Google Translate Help: Download languages to use offline.
Apple Translate on iPhone or iPad
Apple manages language downloads under Settings > Apps > Translate > Languages. Its guides describe downloading languages for on-device translation and setting On-Device Translation to Automatic or Always, but do not document a cancel-in-progress button or procedure. Treat those settings as language and translation preferences, not as a way to stop a current transfer.

- Open Microsoft Translator’s settings.
- Tap Offline Languages.
- Press and hold the language pack to delete it.
This is a removal procedure for an offline pack, not confirmation that it cancels a transfer still in progress. See Translator for Android FAQs.
If the download is still progressing
- Confirm which app and device are downloading the language.
- Check that app’s download screen and the device’s download interface for an explicit Cancel control.
- If no cancel control appears, consult the current help for your specific app and version. The official pages cited above do not establish a universal workaround.
- Afterward, check the app’s downloaded-language list to see whether the package is present. If it is, use the removal steps for that app and platform.
For the apps and platforms in this guide, official documentation establishes how to remove certain completed offline packages and, for Google Translate on Android, how to manage future downloads over mobile data. It does not confirm a general method to cancel an active transfer.
