Meet only if you feel comfortable, and treat the other player’s identity as unverified: time spent gaming together does not confirm who they are offline. Before agreeing, tell a trusted person the plan; choose a busy public place in daylight; arrange your own way there and home; and keep your phone available. If you are under 18, involve a caregiver before making any plan to meet.
Should you meet an online gaming friend in person?
That decision is yours, but do not let friendship, urgency, gifts, guilt, threats, or pressure make it for you. A familiar username and long gaming history do not verify a person’s real-world identity. People can use false profiles or misrepresent themselves online.
If you are a child or teen, tell a caregiver before any meeting. The FBI’s U.S. guidance is explicit: “Don’t meet an online friend in person without your caregiver knowing or going with you.” A caregiver can help assess the plan and accompany you. If the other person insists that you keep the meeting secret, do not proceed without adult support.
Take time to check for inconsistencies
If you are considering a meeting, you could ask for a recent face photo or suggest a live video call, if you are comfortable. An Garda Síochána recommends these as precautions. They may reveal inconsistencies, but they cannot prove someone’s identity or make a meeting risk-free.

Save the person’s profile and relevant messages, and share them with someone you trust. The Australian eSafety Commissioner recommends screenshotting the profile before a meeting. Avoid sharing your home address, school, workplace, regular routes, passwords, financial details, or live location publicly. Share the meeting plan only with a trusted contact.
What should you tell someone before meeting?
Give a trusted person enough information to know where you are, who you expect to meet, and when to check that you are safe. Agree in advance on what they should do if you miss a check-in. Share your live location with them if appropriate and comfortable; do not post it publicly.

Where should you meet, and how do you get home safely?
Choose a busy, staffed public place, such as a café or shopping centre, and keep the first meeting there. Daylight is a sensible preference when practical; Victoria Police specifically advises meeting during daylight hours. No venue is inherently safe, so choose a place where other people are around and you can leave without relying on your new acquaintance.

What should you do during the meeting?
Stay in the public place, keep control of your belongings and transport, and follow the check-in plan. You do not need to negotiate or give a detailed explanation if you want to leave. New Zealand Police advises people not to feel bad about cutting a meeting short.

Treat secrecy as a warning sign, especially if the person asks you to hide the relationship or meeting from a caregiver or trusted adult. Do not agree to meet under that condition. For minors, caregiver involvement is essential. The FBI also notes that “No” is an acceptable answer to any request.

Other warning signs include requests for money, personal details, passwords, images, or sexual content; valuable gifts; unusually rapid closeness; pressure to move to a more private chat or video service; and efforts to isolate you. eSafety, the FBI, and the FTC identify these behaviors as concerns in online gaming contacts. A warning sign is not proof that a particular crime has occurred, but it is a good reason to pause, refuse, block or report the person, and ask someone you trust for help.
How can families make gaming contacts safer?
Review privacy and communication settings together, before a problem arises. Depending on the game, controls may let families limit friend requests from strangers, chat, visibility of personal information, or gift sharing. The FTC recommends discussing family rules and restricting chats to known friends when appropriate; eSafety advises age-appropriate supervision and caution with private messaging, gifts, content sharing, and livestreaming for children and younger teens.
Make it easy for a child to tell an adult about an uncomfortable interaction without fearing automatic punishment or loss of game access. Teach them how to block and report players. If a player makes a child uncomfortable, NIST recommends telling a trusted adult and keeping a record of what was said. Preserve relevant messages and screenshots; the FBI says not to delete chats or shared images or videos if a child is targeted. Use the game’s reporting tools and seek help from the relevant local authorities or child-safety service when warranted.
