Build and test waits can create openings for distraction, but they do not affect every developer in the same way. The useful response is twofold: shorten avoidable feedback loops, then give unavoidable waits a deliberate purpose so you can return to the same thought you were working on.
Why a build wait can disrupt your train of thought
Serguey Asael Shinder’s 2025 DEV Community essay, “Your Build Time Is Choosing What You Think About,” frames repeated build pauses as moments when developers may turn to unrelated work—the inbox, a chat channel, or another task—and then have to reconstruct what they were testing when they return. The title is a practical framing, not a proven universal effect: the essay’s examples of a little over two minutes for a round trip and thirty waits in a day are illustrative, unattributed figures, not measured statistics.
Research offers context, but not a direct test of build waits. A 2018 software-development study reports that voluntary self-interruptions can be more disruptive than external interruptions and can negatively affect performance on interrupted tasks. That supports concern about choosing to switch tasks during a wait; it does not show that build duration causes task switching or that every developer reacts alike. A 2021 cognitive task-resumption study associates especially complex interruptions with longer resumption lags. It supports the idea that reorienting and retrieving task context can take effort, but does not establish a universal recovery-time figure.

Start with the delay you actually experience, not an assumed build time. Then look for work the current test or build does not need to repeat. These are practical options from Shinder’s essay, not guarantees that apply to every project or toolchain.

Time the loop you are really in
Measure the save-to-result cycle on the machine and project you use. Include the steps that matter to your work: making a change, running the relevant build or test, and seeing the result. A duration measured on another machine or under different project conditions may not describe your real loop.
Run only the relevant test when appropriate
If you are checking one focused change, consider running its single relevant test instead of the full suite, provided that narrower run gives you adequate feedback. Use the broader suite when the change or the confidence you need calls for it; a shorter run is not automatically a sufficient one.

Keep a process alive between attempts
Where your workflow supports it, keep the relevant process running so each attempt does not require starting from scratch. Check that the process is responding to the changes you make and producing the result you expect.
Avoid rebuilding unchanged inputs
Notice whether your workflow repeats work for inputs that have not changed. If it does, look for a way to avoid that unnecessary rebuild while still validating the changes that matter.

What to do when the wait cannot be shortened
Give the pause one focused purpose rather than opening a second task. Shinder suggests standing up, looking at something far away, or writing a short note about the current question and expected result. The note can be as simple as what you changed, what you are testing, and what outcome would confirm or challenge your expectation. A note in any convenient place is enough; a dedicated notebook is optional.
When the build or test finishes, use the note to resume the same thought: compare the actual result with the result you expected, then decide the next step. This is not a promise that attention will never wander; it is a simple way to make the task context visible when you return.
