Use your operating system’s service manager for a packaged installation: on Debian or Ubuntu the usual service name is apache2; on Fedora, CentOS, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux it is commonly httpd. For a Unix-like source installation, use apachectl. Choose graceful rather than an immediate restart when you want active requests to finish.
Commands for a packaged Linux installation
Distribution packages register Apache as a system service. Run the commands for your distribution, and check the host’s actual unit name if these do not apply; package layouts and local configuration can vary. Apache documents the start examples in its installation guide; the stop and restart commands use the corresponding systemctl service operations.
Debian and Ubuntu
sudo systemctl start apache2
sudo systemctl stop apache2
sudo systemctl restart apache2Fedora, CentOS, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux
sudo systemctl start httpd
sudo systemctl stop httpd
sudo systemctl restart httpdstart runs the service, stop shuts it down, and restart stops and starts it again. An immediate restart can interrupt active requests.
Commands for a Unix-like source installation
For Apache built from source, the Apache documentation recommends its apachectl control script. Run it with the privileges and installation path appropriate to your setup; source installations may not share a package’s paths or defaults. The equivalent -k forms are shown in the apachectl reference.

sudo apachectl restart
sudo apachectl graceful
sudo apachectl -tapachectl start reports an error if the server is already running. apachectl restart also starts Apache if it is not running.
Choose between restart and graceful restart

Use graceful after a configuration change when you want to reduce disruption. Apache checks configuration syntax before a restart or graceful restart; if syntax is invalid, it refuses the operation rather than restarting with that invalid configuration. A syntax check cannot guarantee that every runtime condition will work. See Apache’s restart and shutdown documentation.

Control Apache as a Windows service
On Windows, use the installed httpd.exe and the service name configured for that installation. Open a command prompt with the permissions required to control the service, and substitute the real executable path and service name for the examples below. Apache documents the service options in its Windows guide.

httpd.exe -k stop -n "ApacheServiceName"
httpd.exe -k restart -n "ApacheServiceName"The first command tests configuration syntax; the others start, stop, or restart the named service. Use the actual service name in place of ApacheServiceName.

Check syntax before restarting
On a Unix-like source installation, run sudo apachectl -t before restarting to catch a configuration syntax error. For a packaged service, use the installation’s Apache control script or its documented configuration-test command; the exact path can differ. A successful syntax test confirms parsing, not that ports, permissions, dependencies, or other runtime conditions are correct.
Troubleshoot a failed start or restart
- Confirm the service name and installation type. Debian and Ubuntu commonly use
apache2; Fedora-family distributions commonly usehttpd. A customized or differently packaged host may use another unit or path. - Check permissions. On Unix-like systems, binding to port 80 or another port below 1024 requires root privileges. Use the appropriate administrative permissions for the service manager or control script.
- Check for a port conflict. A bind error can mean another Apache instance or another web server already owns the configured port.
- Read Apache’s active error log. Fatal startup problems may appear in the console or the configured
ErrorLog. Check the active configuration for the log location rather than assuming one universal path. - Control the parent service, not arbitrary child processes. For packaged installations, use the service manager. Apache’s control documentation advises using its control script or the operating system’s service script; on Unix-like systems, control signals are for the parent process.
