Start with the basics of Summoner’s Rift, then learn in Co-op versus AI before moving to a lower-stakes player-versus-player mode such as Swiftplay, if it is available in your client. Your first goal is to understand what your champion can do and how a match unfolds—not to reproduce the mechanics of professional players.
What you are trying to do in League
League of Legends is a five-versus-five team strategy game. On Summoner’s Rift, teams fight across lanes, use champion abilities, and gather for team fights as they advance toward the opposing base. The main objective is to destroy the enemy Nexus. Riot’s beginner guide introduces the core mode and its essentials.
Professional matches can make League look like a stream of complex plays. For a new player, it is more useful to first recognize the map, move and use abilities, and understand how the team progresses toward the Nexus. You can add more detailed strategy later.

A low-pressure route into your first matches
- Work through the beginner essentials. Use Riot’s official tutorial or beginner materials to get acquainted with the controls and match objective before expecting yourself to make fast decisions.
- Practice against bots. Choose Co-op versus AI to play with human teammates against AI opponents. Riot describes this as a lower-pressure place for newer players to learn and grow, with bots intended to feel more like ordinary Summoner’s Rift gameplay. See Riot’s Co-op versus AI guide.
- Try PvP when the map and match flow feel less unfamiliar. If it is available in your region and current client, Swiftplay is a faster, lower-stakes way to experience much of traditional Summoner’s Rift against other players. Riot introduced it with learners and returning players in mind. Its design director, Bryan “Riot Axes” Salvatore, described it as “a fast queue that still allows you to experience the full arc of what League can offer” in Riot’s Swiftplay announcement.
- Pick one learning goal per match. For example, focus on moving around the map, using your abilities, or noticing when teams gather. Treat this as a way to keep early games manageable, not as an official Riot checklist or a test you must pass.
Which mode should you start with?

Mode availability and queue arrangements can change. Riot’s patch 26.3 notes say it had changed Co-op versus AI to use Swiftplay instead of normal Summoner’s Rift, then reverted that change after queue times increased. Check the live client for the current options rather than assuming a queue works the same way everywhere or indefinitely. Riot’s patch 26.3 notes describe that change and reversal.

What watching esports helps with—and what it does not
Watching can make champion abilities, team fights, and map movement easier to recognize. But when you play, you also have to control your champion, manage the camera, use abilities, and decide what to do in real time. Knowing what a skilled player did is not the same as being able to execute it while handling those tasks yourself.
Use esports as a source of focused examples. Choose one mechanic or decision to notice—such as how a player uses a particular ability—and then practice that one thing in a match. Riot’s 2018 new-player discussion suggests watching a streamer or YouTube creator for help with combos. That is a specific learning suggestion, not a complete or current training curriculum.

Set a useful standard for your first games
Early success is learning how to take part in a match, not playing like a professional or winning every game. Let each match answer one small question: Can you move around the map more confidently? Do you know what your champion’s abilities do? Are you beginning to notice when your team groups up? Progress on those basics gives you a foundation for learning more complicated decisions.
