To start a podcast on YouTube, create a public playlist for your show and add its full episode videos in the order people should watch or listen. An MP3 file alone is not a YouTube podcast episode. After setup, use YouTube’s podcast and video analytics to see how people find and watch your episodes, then refine your titles, descriptions, packaging, and promotion based on those results. Podcast features can create additional discovery opportunities, but they do not guarantee more viewers.
What counts as a podcast on YouTube?
YouTube represents a podcast as a playlist and its episodes as videos inside that playlist. The playlist is the show; each episode is a video. You cannot turn an MP3 alone into a podcast episode in YouTube Studio, so an audio-first show needs video episodes—for example, a video recording, a visual version of the audio, or another suitable video format. YouTube’s setup guidance is at Create a podcast in YouTube Studio.
Keep one main podcast playlist for each show. Put full episodes from every season in that playlist, rather than creating a separate podcast playlist for each season. Use a separate playlist for clips, trailers, bonus material, or unrelated uploads so listeners can distinguish the complete show from supporting content.

Choose the right setup route

YouTube also documents two distribution routes for audio-first shows. Choose Studio creation if you will upload video episodes directly; consider RSS distribution if your show already has an RSS feed and your podcast host supports delivery to YouTube. Create the podcast in YouTube Studio
- Open the podcast workflow. In YouTube Studio, choose Create > New podcast. If you already have a playlist, use the option to set that playlist as a podcast instead.
- Enter the show details. Add the actual show name, a detailed description that explains the subject and what listeners can expect, the visibility, and a square thumbnail. YouTube may ask you to verify your account.
- Add the full episodes. Upload new episode videos or add existing videos to the podcast playlist. Check that the playlist contains the episodes for this show, not clips, another show’s episodes, or videos from other channels.
- Set the listening order. For an episodic show, YouTube’s creation guidance generally recommends newest first. For a serial show, generally put the oldest episode first so listeners can follow the story in sequence. Choose the order that matches how a listener should consume the show.
- Review the public result. Check the show title, description, thumbnail, visibility, and episode order on the playlist page. Make sure the full episode playlist is easy to distinguish from any clips or companion videos.
YouTube’s podcast discovery tips recommend a public podcast playlist for each show, a title using the show’s name, and a detailed description. Avoid replacing a descriptive show title with generic labels such as “Full Episodes” or “New Uploads.”
Make episodes easier to discover without promising a growth shortcut
Eligible podcast content may appear in YouTube Music, receive podcast badges on Watch and Playlist pages, get a spotlight on youtube.com/podcasts, and benefit from Watch-page discovery, recommendations to listeners with similar interests, and improved search features. These are possible discovery surfaces, not guaranteed placements or a promise of audience growth. A playlist marked as a podcast may still not qualify for some features, including when it contains content you do not own. Shorts made to support a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music. YouTube describes these conditions in its podcast distribution guidance.

- Use the show’s real name and explain its subject clearly in the description.
- Keep the main podcast playlist focused on complete episodes, with clips and other supporting uploads elsewhere.
- Choose an episode order that works for the format: newest-first for most episodic shows, oldest-first for serial shows.
- Make each episode’s video and packaging useful to a viewer deciding whether to watch; then measure how viewers respond rather than assuming a particular format will perform better.
These steps improve clarity and make the show eligible to use the podcast workflow as intended; none ensures a recommendation, a search position, or a particular number of views.
Measure reach and use it to decide what to change
In YouTube Studio, review the podcast analytics view for available measures such as views, watch time, traffic sources, audience demographics, retention, and revenue data. For an individual episode, open its video analytics and inspect the Reach report. YouTube’s video reach guidance explains that the report can show how viewers found a video, including external sites and apps and videos that suggested it, alongside measures such as click-through rate, views, and watch time.

- Look at traffic sources over time. Identify whether viewers are arriving from YouTube search, recommendations, external links, or other reported sources. A change in one episode is a clue to investigate, not proof that one edit caused the change.
- Pair discovery with retention. Compare where viewers came from with how long they watched. If an episode attracts clicks but viewers leave early, review whether its opening and content deliver what its title and description lead people to expect.
- Make one useful packaging or promotion adjustment. Based on the pattern, refine the relevant title, description, thumbnail, episode opening, or promotion channel. Then watch subsequent results rather than treating a single report as a verdict.
- Repeat the review. Compare episodes and periods with similar context where possible. Reach data helps you make informed experiments; it does not establish that any one change will increase views.
Copyright, ownership, and monetization checks
- Use episode material you own or are authorized to use. YouTube notes that some podcast playlists may not qualify for features when the content is not owned by the creator.
- Keep third-party videos out of the show playlist; the playlist should represent your show’s episodes.
- If an upload is monetized, it remains subject to YouTube monetization policies.
- If an episode contains sponsored or endorsed content, YouTube guidance may require disclosure to viewers. Check the applicable disclosure requirements when publishing.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
