To start a podcast and livestream it on YouTube, enable live streaming on an eligible channel, choose a webcam or encoder setup, test your audio and upload connection, and then broadcast from YouTube Studio. After the stream, add its replay to a YouTube podcast playlist: YouTube treats the show as a playlist and each episode as a video.

1. Make sure your channel can livestream

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so turn it on well before your first episode rather than waiting until show day. Check the current eligibility and activation details in YouTube’s live-streaming help.

2. Choose how to produce the show

Use a webcam for a simple setup

This is the easiest route for a host speaking to camera with a computer webcam and microphone. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Webcam, enter the stream title and description, choose visibility, select the camera and microphone, and go live. You can schedule the broadcast if you want viewers to have a watch page ahead of time. Streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. See YouTube’s webcam-stream instructions.

Use an encoder for more control

An encoder is a better fit if you need external microphones or cameras, multiple camera angles, screen sharing, graphics, or a more deliberate production layout. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the event and copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder software or hardware. Connect your equipment, start the encoder, check the preview, and then select Go Live in the Live Control Room. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS workflows and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. Keep the stream key private: it functions as the stream’s password and address. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Start with what you have

You do not need a studio or expensive equipment to begin. A laptop and webcam can be enough for a straightforward show. Add equipment only to solve a real need, such as clearer microphone audio, monitoring with headphones, or a camera angle the built-in camera cannot provide. YouTube’s live-streaming tips offer further setup guidance.

3. Prepare the episode and test the connection

  1. Plan the format. Decide whether the episode is host-only, includes guests, or uses screen content or graphics. Confirm how each participant will be heard and seen.
  2. Set the event details. Give the stream a clear title and description, choose its visibility, and schedule it in advance if viewers need time to plan or share the watch page.
  3. Check the audio and picture. Test with movement and speaking at a level similar to the real show. Listen for guests who are too quiet, clipping, room noise, or echo; check that the selected camera shows the intended framing.
  4. Test the actual upload connection. Your available upload bandwidth must comfortably exceed the stream’s bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom; a shared connection may deliver less upload capacity than expected. Test the connection you will use during the episode, not only a different network or time of day. See YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings.
  5. Review the preview and stream health. Before going live, confirm the Live Control Room preview shows the right image and audio. During the broadcast, keep an eye on stream health and sound and picture quality.

For encoder streams, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 among the supported video codec options for RTMP/RTMPS. Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate affect the bandwidth required; use YouTube’s current resolution-specific bitrate guidance rather than relying on a fixed setting that may not suit your chosen quality or connection.

Do not share or publish the stream key. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key before the next broadcast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Turn the livestream replay into a podcast episode

YouTube’s podcast format is built around a playlist: the playlist represents the show, and each episode is a video. In YouTube Studio, create a podcast or designate an existing playlist as one. Use a descriptive show title and description, and add square show artwork; YouTube recommends a 1280 × 1280 pixel podcast thumbnail. Podcast features may not be available for every playlist. See YouTube’s podcast playlist guidance.

Keep full episodes in the show playlist

After the live replay is available, check its title and visibility, then add it to the podcast playlist in the intended episode order. Keep full-length episodes together, including seasons. Use separate playlists for clips and Shorts so they do not interrupt the listening order of full episodes. For an episodic show, the newest episode generally goes first; for a serial show, the oldest generally goes first. YouTube explains podcast creation and playlist management in its podcast help page.

6. Consider RSS if the show is audio-first

Where the feature is available, creators can connect an RSS feed in YouTube Studio. YouTube can create static-image videos using the show art for selected episodes and may automatically upload new feed episodes. RSS availability varies by country or region, so check the option in your account before relying on it for a publishing schedule. It is not a substitute for distributing the podcast to other platforms: changes to the feed do not necessarily update every show detail or audio already uploaded to YouTube. Details are in YouTube’s RSS podcast guidance.

7. Troubleshoot common problems

  • Livestreaming is unavailable: verify the channel, check for live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, confirm the streamer meets YouTube’s age requirement, and allow up to 24 hours after first-time activation.
  • The encoder does not appear in the preview: confirm the encoder is running and using the correct event’s stream URL and key. Check that the key has not been replaced and that the encoder is sending a supported signal.
  • The stream buffers or loses quality: reduce the bitrate or selected quality until it fits the connection, then retest with YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom. Check whether other users or devices are consuming upload capacity.
  • The host or a guest sounds unclear: recheck the selected microphone, input level, and physical connection. Test with everyone speaking as they will during the show, and monitor the preview before starting.
  • The replay is missing from the podcast: confirm the livestream was archived, then check the replay’s visibility and add the video to the correct podcast playlist. If podcast controls are unavailable for a playlist, YouTube may not consider it eligible.
  • RSS options are absent: RSS ingestion is not available in every country or region. Confirm current availability in YouTube Studio rather than planning around an option that is not shown.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your format includes a prerecorded episode or other uploaded video that should keep looping as a YouTube livestream, StreamNeo runs it from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing needs to stay powered on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
