There is no universal way to start a powered-off Lenovo laptop when its power button cannot be used. Some models have an emergency-reset hole that can help with a no-power reset, while some IdeaPads have a Novo button that opens recovery or startup options. Neither control is a guaranteed replacement for a broken power button. Identify your exact model and verify the control in its Lenovo user guide before pressing a pinhole.
First, identify the model and what “won’t turn on” means
Find the model name or machine type on the laptop’s label, packaging, Lenovo account, or device records. Then determine whether the laptop is fully shut down, asleep, or powered on with a black screen. Those states call for different troubleshooting; a keyboard wake action, if it works, does not show that the laptop can boot from a full shutdown.
Lenovo’s documented guidance covers power checks, reset procedures, and certain Novo menus. It does not establish that a keyboard, mouse, opening the lid, or a USB device can start an arbitrary Lenovo laptop from a full shutdown.

Check power before trying a reset control
- Connect the correct AC adapter directly to a working wall outlet. Look for charging or power indicators.
- Disconnect peripherals and other external devices.
- Follow Lenovo’s Troubleshooting No Power Issues guidance and the instructions for your exact model.
Use an emergency-reset hole only when the guide identifies it
Some Lenovo laptops with an internal battery have an emergency-reset hole. Lenovo’s general no-power instructions say to disconnect AC, use a straightened paper clip in the identified hole to reset the system, reconnect AC, and then try to start the computer. The reset temporarily cuts power; it does not mechanically replace a failed power button.

Do not insert a paper clip into an unidentified opening. Openings can have different purposes, and Lenovo’s procedure is model-specific. For example, the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 User Guide describes an emergency-reset procedure for that model family; it is not evidence that every Lenovo laptop has the same control or layout.
Use the Novo button only on a compatible IdeaPad
Some IdeaPads have a Novo button, which may be a small button or pinhole. Its location varies by model. Lenovo says the button can open a menu with options such as system recovery, BIOS setup, or boot configuration. Check the exact model’s guide to confirm that it has Novo and to identify its location before pressing anything. Do not confuse it with an emergency-reset hole or another opening.

Choose a procedure based on three things: whether your exact model has the control, whether the laptop is shut down or unresponsive, and whether you need ordinary startup or access to recovery or BIOS. The controls are not interchangeable.

If it still will not start, stop and get model-specific help
If Lenovo’s reset troubleshooting works but the power button remains a problem, Lenovo says there may be an issue with the button and directs users to Support. If the laptop remains unresponsive, do not keep testing unidentified pinholes or move on to opening the computer or shorting motherboard contacts. Contact Lenovo Support or use service guidance for the exact model. Lenovo’s ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 / T14s 2-in-1 Gen 1 User Guide is another example of a model-specific emergency-reset procedure.
