Before buying a game, check its rating and store listing for purchase notices, price the extras you actually want, and read the terms for any trial or subscription. Then compare the full expected cost—not just the base price—and check what you get and how long you can access it.

Check the rating and store listing for purchase notices

On a game’s box, digital product page, or ESRB rating search, look for ESRB’s “In-Game Purchases” notice. It flags that a game offers paid digital goods. “Includes Random Items” signals that purchases can contain rewards whose contents are unknown in advance. ESRB says these notices help consumers make more informed decisions before buying or downloading a game. ESRB explains its purchase notices.

A missing notice is not proof that a game has no purchases: ESRB warns that older-rated titles may not include these notices even when they contain in-game purchases. Check the current store listing and the game’s own terms as well.

Work out the cost of the game and its extras

Start with the base price, then price separately any virtual currency, expansions, cosmetics, season passes, and paid gameplay you expect to use. These are different purchase types, and the exact prices depend on the game and store. ESRB’s guide describes the kinds of in-game purchases to look for: ESRB: In-Game Purchases.

Convert virtual currency into real money

If an item costs virtual currency, compare that amount with the real-money bundles available. Work out how much you must spend to obtain enough currency for the item you want; bundle sizes can make the effective cost less obvious than a direct price. Avoid treating leftover currency as free value unless you expect to spend it.

Check randomized purchases

If a paid item contains a random reward, look for odds information before purchasing. Google Play requires odds disclosure in advance and close to randomized-item purchases within its ecosystem; that requirement should not be assumed to apply to every game or store. Google Play’s policy on randomized virtual items describes its rules.

Read trial and subscription terms before starting

For a game subscription or trial, check the end date, price after the trial, billing interval, automatic-renewal setting, cancellation instructions, and whether the subscription is required to play or access a particular feature. A low-cost or free trial can become a recurring charge if it renews. Note the renewal date, set a reminder, and review the payment statement for charges. Store and platform terms can change, so confirm the current terms where you subscribe. Google Play’s subscription guidance covers subscriptions in its ecosystem: Google Play subscriptions.

Confirm what is included and how long access lasts

Do not assume a subscription includes every game feature, expansion, or item; check the specific inclusions and exclusions. Also distinguish paying for a digital game from receiving permanent, platform-independent ownership. Digital access may depend on the account or platform used to buy or play it. Review the applicable account and store terms before purchase. The FTC’s consumer guidance discusses game purchases and parental controls in the United States: FTC: Kids and video games.

Compare the full cost before checkout

  1. Check the rating and current store listing for purchase notices, while remembering that older-rated games may not show them.
  2. List the extras you expect to buy and translate any virtual-currency price into the real-money spend required.
  3. For randomized purchases, find the odds disclosure available in that store or game before paying.
  4. For trials and subscriptions, record the next charge, billing interval, renewal terms, cancellation path, and included access.
  5. Review the final checkout total and compare it with the total you expect to pay over the period you plan to play.

This comparison makes it easier to distinguish a game’s upfront price from optional add-ons and recurring costs, and to judge whether the content and access period match what you want.
