If a post claims to show GTA 6, check its source and match the exact item against Rockstar’s official media library before deciding what it is. If you cannot verify its origin, call it unverified—not automatically fake or real. A repost, convincing thumbnail, or “leak” caption is not proof.

Start with Rockstar’s official GTA VI pages

Open Rockstar’s official GTA VI page and follow its links to the media catalog. Search for the same release or scene there, and compare the original title, date, asset, and category. Visit the pages directly rather than relying on a screenshot of a page, shortened link, or repost caption.

As of October 3, 2026, Rockstar’s landing page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and a release date of November 19, 2026. Release and product details can change, so check the live page rather than relying on old posts or saved screenshots.

The catalog’s categories matter: a piece of promotional artwork can depict GTA VI without being a screenshot or captured gameplay. At the time checked, Rockstar listed three featured videos, nine clips, 99 screenshots, 51 Ultimate Edition screenshots, 12 Vintage Vice City screenshots, and 23 artwork and wallpaper items. Those are a snapshot of the catalog, not permanent totals.

Use this workflow to check a suspicious post

  1. Find the earliest available post. Note the uploader, date, and whether it links to an original Rockstar, Take-Two, or official Rockstar YouTube release. An account name, repost, crop, or dramatic thumbnail does not authenticate the media.
  2. Look for the exact release in Rockstar’s catalog. Compare the complete original, title, date, and description—not just a visually similar frame. Rockstar’s library is a useful reference for confirmed releases, but it is not a published exhaustive registry of every authentic image or possible leak.
  3. Check what kind of asset it is. Rockstar separates videos, clips, screenshots, and artwork. Determine whether the item is being presented in the same category Rockstar uses. A fan render, edited frame, or promotional illustration is not automatically gameplay footage.
  4. Compare capture claims only with the release they describe. Rockstar says its Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, dated August 27, 2026, was “Captured entirely from in-game footage on the PlayStation 5.” Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 release says, “All trailer footage was captured on PlayStation 5,” referring to Trailer 2. These statements concern those named releases; they are not a universal visual test for every purported GTA VI image or clip.
  5. Look for corroboration beyond the caption. A claim that something is a leak, or that it was removed, does not by itself establish where it came from or whether it is genuine. Treat visual oddities as reasons to investigate, not a verdict.

What visual clues can—and cannot—tell you

Cropping, compression, strange text, inconsistent shadows, unusual interface elements, reused footage, or conspicuous artifacts may warrant a closer source check. But the official references above do not provide a pixel-level authenticity test, and none of those clues alone proves that an item is fake. Likewise, visual polish does not prove that it is official.

When the original file, provenance, and reliable confirmation are missing, the most accurate label is unverified. Use fan-made or edited only when there is evidence for that description; use purported leak to describe a claim, not as confirmation that the claim is true.

Why takedowns do not authenticate a leak

Rockstar’s January 10, 2025 policy says it will take down posts showing in-game footage from leaked pre-release copies regardless of how the copy was obtained. That explains a content-enforcement position; it does not prove that any particular viral post contains genuine leaked footage. A removal or copyright claim should not be treated as independent confirmation.

Watch for outdated official information, too

Official sources are the best place to confirm what Rockstar has published, but older official announcements can become outdated. Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 Trailer 2 release gave a May 26, 2026 launch date; Rockstar’s current GTA VI page, checked October 3, 2026, lists November 19, 2026. For current release details, use the live game page rather than repeating an older announcement.

Quick decision guide

  • Official: The exact release is available through Rockstar’s official channels, and its title and category match.
  • Fan-made or edited: Use these labels when credible evidence identifies the work as a fan creation or alteration.
  • Unverified: The source or identity of the exact media item cannot be confirmed. Absence from Rockstar’s catalog alone does not prove it is fake.
  • Purported leak: The post claims leaked origin, but that label alone does not establish authenticity.
