If a crypto reward, token vote, or airdrop arrives unexpectedly, don’t connect your wallet or sign anything until you verify the exact campaign through a project website, app, or contact channel you found independently. A polished page, familiar logo, or browser padlock cannot prove an offer is genuine. Never share a wallet recovery phrase or private key, and don’t pay a fee to unlock a supposed free reward.
How to check whether a crypto airdrop website is legitimate
Use a verification route that does not depend on the person or message promoting the offer. The key question is not whether the page looks convincing; it is whether the project confirms this specific campaign through a channel you reached independently.
- Pause before interacting. Don’t click further, connect a wallet, sign a message or transaction, or enter personal or financial information. Urgency is a reason to slow down. The FTC advises giveaway recipients to “pause” before responding in its social-media giveaway guidance.
- Find the project’s official channel yourself. Type an established project address you already trust, use its official app, or locate a known support channel independently. Don’t use the link in an unsolicited post, direct message, email, or reply to establish that the sender is real. The FTC recommends contacting businesses through details you know are genuine in its scam-avoidance guidance.
- Look for the exact promotion. Check whether that official site, app, or account announces the same reward or vote, with matching details. A similar name, logo, profile picture, or a post appearing in a real giveaway thread is not confirmation; scammers can impersonate organizations or hijack legitimate giveaway contexts.
- Stop if it asks for secrets or payment. Never disclose a private key or recovery phrase. Don’t send crypto or pay a fee to claim a supposedly free prize, and don’t provide sensitive financial information to an unverified page. The FTC’s 2025 alert puts it plainly: “Real prizes are free.”
A suspicious-link checker can be an additional signal, but it cannot establish that a crypto promotion is genuine. The sources cited here do not validate any scanner as a certification service. A clean-looking result should not replace confirmation through an independently located official channel.

Warning signs in a reward, vote, or airdrop offer
- Unexpected contact and pressure: a message says you have won, must act immediately, or will lose eligibility unless you follow its link. Prize and phishing guidance from the FTC recommends pausing and checking independently rather than following an urgent message.
- A demand to pay first: the site asks for a fee, deposit, or crypto transfer to release a free reward. Treat this as a stop signal, not a normal verification step.
- A request for wallet secrets: a form, chat, or “claim” page asks for a recovery phrase or private key. A submission filed with the SEC describes airdrop impersonation used to solicit private keys, personal information, or assets under false pretenses. That filing is a submitter’s description, not a standalone SEC consumer alert.
- A vote that pushes you to sign: a vote page asks you to connect a wallet or approve a transaction as the price of participating or claiming a reward. Do not sign while the campaign and the action are unverified. The available sources do not establish that every wallet signature request is fraudulent; they do support treating an unexpected request to expose information or move assets as a reason to stop and verify first.
- Branding without independent confirmation: a convincing design or account name resembles a known project, but the exact campaign cannot be found through the project’s independently located official channels.
A secure-looking connection or professional design only describes aspects of the page or connection; it does not confirm who operates it or whether the reward is real. Appearance alone is not verification.

What to do if you already clicked, connected, or shared information
- Stop using the suspicious site. Don’t follow more prompts, provide additional details, or pay a requested fee.
- Contact the real organization through a known channel. Locate the project, wallet, or exchange’s official support instructions independently rather than returning through the suspicious link.
- Report the impersonation. If the offer came from a social-media account or giveaway post, report the post or account and notify the real organization using independently known contact details.
- Act promptly, but don’t assume funds can be recovered. The FTC says cryptocurrency payments typically cannot be reversed. Recovery steps depend on the wallet, exchange, chain, and what you shared or signed; follow legitimate provider support instructions and don’t trust anyone promising guaranteed recovery.
The cited guidance supports stopping contact, reaching the real organization, and reporting suspected scams; it does not provide one technical recovery procedure that applies to every wallet or transaction.
