A big discount percentage is not proof of a good deal. Check the exact product’s price history, compare its current total price at other sellers, and read the checkout and return terms before buying. A price alert can tell you when a price changes; it cannot, by itself, tell you whether the new price is unusually low.
What makes a Black Friday deal look fake?
A deal can be misleading without the product being counterfeit or the seller being a scammer. A crossed-out price may create the impression of an exceptional saving even when the current price is ordinary for that product. The practical test is whether the offer is worthwhile against the product’s own price history and the current prices for the same item elsewhere.
Which? reported in 2025 that nine in ten Black Friday deals in the set it examined were cheaper or the same price at other times of the year. That result applies to the deals and periods in Which?’s analysis; it is not a rate for every Black Friday offer. The useful lesson is to check a particular item’s history rather than assume the sale date guarantees a low price.

How to check a deal before buying
-
Match the exact product
Write down the manufacturer, model number, generation, size, storage or capacity, and included accessories. Compare like with like: a lower price for a smaller capacity, older model, or different bundle is not necessarily a better price for the item you want.
-
Check the price history
Use a price-history source that covers the retailer and product where possible. Look at the price over a meaningful period, not just the recent countdown or the seller’s claimed “was” price. Ask whether today’s price is low compared with that product’s own past prices. Coverage differs between services and sellers, so an incomplete history is not proof that the price never changed.
-
Compare current prices at other sellers
Search the exact model identifier, then compare the total payable price rather than the headline figure. Check whether the other listing is for the same condition, model, and bundle, and whether the seller is the retailer itself or a marketplace seller.

Evaluate the reference price cautiously
A percentage saving depends on the reference price being meaningful. The European Commission reported in its 2026 online-sales sweep that 34% of traders displayed price comparisons; among that subset, 60% did not clearly explain where the reference prices came from. Those figures describe the Commission’s sweep, not all online merchants. Treat an unexplained comparison as a prompt to verify the item’s history, not as evidence of a bargain.

Calculate the real checkout total
Include delivery and any other charges you cannot avoid. Check whether the price changes when you select the required size, delivery method, or bundle. UK Competition and Markets Authority guidance says prices should include charges consumers cannot avoid; legal rules depend on jurisdiction, so this is not a universal legal test.
-
Read the return and refund terms
Before paying, check the refund policy, return window, return-shipping responsibility, and any restocking fee. These terms can change the value of a discount, especially for a product you may need to return. The US Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to review deal terms and return details.
How to track price changes with alerts
Price history and price alerts serve different purposes. History shows the prices a service has recorded; an alert can notify you when the price changes. The FTC notes that some sites let users sign up for price alerts. Availability and retailer coverage vary, so check what the particular service tracks and whether it monitors the seller you plan to use.

- Find the exact product in a price-history or alert service that supports its retailer.
- Review the recorded history and choose a target price you consider worthwhile, based on your budget and the item’s past prices.
- Set an alert for that target if the service offers one, and confirm which retailer and product variant the alert applies to.
- When notified, open the retailer’s listing and verify that the model, bundle, seller, and checkout total still match.
An alert reports a change, not a verdict. A price can fall and still be poor value, or rise after an earlier low. Do not treat an alert as a guarantee that stock, delivery terms, or the displayed offer will remain available.
Check the seller and the urgency claims
Be cautious if an unfamiliar seller appears in an ad, message, or search result and the offer is unusually compelling. The FTC warns that seasonal shopping scams can involve sites that take payment without sending the advertised goods or send something different. Verify the seller’s identity and read its refund details before entering payment information.

- Navigate to a retailer’s site independently if an unexpected ad or message brought you there.
- Check whether the listing names the seller clearly, particularly on a marketplace.
- Treat countdowns, “limited time” notices, and low-stock messages as sales cues, not proof that a price is low.
- Use a payment method with protections appropriate to your situation, and keep the order confirmation and listing details.
Save a record of the listing when useful
If you want a record of what a page showed at a particular moment, a screenshot can document the displayed product, price, and offer wording. It does not establish the price history, validate the seller, or prove what you would ultimately pay at checkout. Save the date and the product identifier alongside the image, and verify the total and terms directly before purchasing.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Trusting the discount percentage: calculate value from the product’s history and other sellers’ current totals instead.
- Comparing different variants: check model, generation, capacity, and bundle contents before deciding one listing is cheaper.
- Confusing a price drop with a bargain: an alert says the price changed; compare the new price with history and alternatives.
- Ignoring checkout costs: delivery and unavoidable charges can erase the apparent saving.
- Assuming a screenshot proves the deal: it records what a page displayed, not the product’s past prices or the seller’s reliability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a crossed-out “was” price prove a retailer broke the law?
No. Whether a particular comparison breaches a rule depends on the facts and the applicable jurisdiction. For a specific concern, consult the relevant consumer-protection authority or legal advice.
Can a price tracker guarantee it has every price a retailer charged?
No such guarantee is established here. Check the tracker’s coverage and treat missing history as uncertainty, not proof of an unchanged price.
