Watch for guaranteed returns, pressure to act quickly, requests to move into private messaging, and demands for more money when you try to withdraw. A familiar account is not proof: a friend’s profile may be impersonated or taken over. Before sending cryptocurrency, verify the person and offer independently. If you have already paid, stop sending money, preserve the records, and report the incident to the appropriate U.S. authorities.

Why social-media crypto pitches deserve extra scrutiny

A scam pitch can appear on a friend’s account, in an ad, or in a conversation with someone you recently met online. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that an old friend’s account may have been taken over and used to promote quick, low-risk returns. Verify the person using a phone number or email address you already know belongs to them—not contact details supplied in the suspicious post or message. The FTC’s social-media investment scam alert explains this warning.

Be especially cautious if a contact builds a relationship and then steers you toward an investment. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) identifies moving a conversation away from the main social platform as a warning sign: private messaging can isolate you from people who might question the pitch. Relationship-based crypto fraud may involve fake profiles and extended conversations before the target is directed to a fraudulent trading platform. CFTC guidance on digital-asset frauds and its 2025 warning about relationship investment scams describe these patterns.

How to recognize a cryptocurrency scam

Guaranteed returns, little risk, or a rush to invest

No investment is risk-free. Promises that you will make guaranteed profits, quickly double your money, or earn a high return with little or no risk are red flags. So are limited-time offers, demands to act immediately, and vague explanations of how the investment works. The FTC puts it plainly: “There are no guaranteed returns — and no investments without risks.” See its consumer alert on spotting investment scams on social media and the CFTC’s digital-asset fraud guidance.

A familiar account—or a new contact—pushes an investment

A genuine friend may not have written a suspicious post: the account could be compromised, or someone may be impersonating them. Separately verify any unexpected investment recommendation through an established channel. Treat repeated investment suggestions from someone you know only online with caution, particularly when that person encourages you to move to a private messaging app or asks you to send money. The CFTC describes these tactics in its relationship investment scam alert.

Apparent profits come with blocked withdrawals

A fraudulent trading site may display a balance that appears to grow, then prevent withdrawals or demand new fees or taxes to release the supposed profits. An on-screen balance is not evidence that funds are available. Do not pay an extra charge to unlock money shown on a suspicious platform; the CFTC warns about fake balances, blocked withdrawals, and additional payment demands in its digital-asset fraud guidance.

Hype centers on an obscure token or DeFi project

Coordinated social-media promotion can inflate interest in an obscure cryptocurrency or decentralized finance (DeFi) project. Promoters may sell after demand rises, leaving later buyers with losses. Popularity, reposts, and enthusiastic testimonials do not establish that a project is legitimate. The CFTC describes this kind of manipulation in its digital-asset fraud guidance.

The seller wants payment in cryptocurrency

A request to pay in crypto is not proof of fraud by itself, but it warrants caution: the FTC notes that cryptocurrency payments are generally difficult to get back. Do not treat a crypto payment request as evidence that an offer is legitimate. See the FTC’s guidance on avoiding a cryptocurrency scam.

What to check before you send money

  1. Pause. Do not click a suspicious link, switch to another app, or send funds just because someone says the opportunity will soon disappear. Urgency is a reason to slow down, not a reason to skip checks.
  2. Verify the person independently. If a friend or acquaintance recommends an investment, contact them using a phone number or email address you already have. Do not rely on the account, link, or contact information in the pitch.
  3. Look for independent warnings and records. Search the company or program name alongside terms such as “scam,” “fraud,” “review,” or “complaint.” Check relevant regulator records as well. Registration may be useful to verify, but it does not guarantee that an investment is safe. The CFTC lists due diligence as one of its steps to take after discovering fraud.
  4. Get an outside perspective and understand the terms. Do not let an online-only acquaintance make investment decisions for you. Ask someone you trust to review the offer, and make sure you understand the costs, fees, and risks before deciding. The CFTC’s fraud guidance also encourages consumers to seek help and evaluate what they are being offered.
  5. Reject guarantees. If the pitch promises fixed profits, no risk, or fast returns, do not send money on that basis. As the FTC says, “There are no guaranteed returns — and no investments without risks.”

What to do if you already sent money or information

Stop payments and preserve the evidence

Stop sending money to the suspected scammers. Do not tell them that you have contacted the FBI; the FBI cautions that alerting suspected criminals could compromise an investigation. Save the original post, the account name and profile URL, messages, emails, phone numbers, websites and apps involved, and payment records. Write down a timeline, including how the first contact happened. The FBI explains what to gather in its cryptocurrency investment fraud guidance and IC3 guidance for cryptocurrency scam victims.

For each crypto transfer, record the asset type, amount, date and time, recipient address, and transaction hash if available. Submit the information you have even if some details are missing. These transaction details can help investigators trace the funds.

Report through the relevant U.S. channels

  • FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3): File a complaint at ic3.gov, or contact a local FBI field office. The FBI advises reporting promptly and providing as much transaction information as possible.
  • Federal Trade Commission: Report a social-media investment scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  • Securities and Exchange Commission: The FTC’s alert also directs consumers to the SEC’s Tips, Complaints, and Referrals portal for investment scams.
  • The social-media platform: Use its in-app reporting option for the account, post, or ad. Platform controls can change, so follow the reporting options currently shown in the app.

These are U.S. reporting routes. If you are elsewhere, contact your national cybercrime and consumer-protection authorities and report the account or content to the platform. A report can support an investigation, but it does not guarantee that authorities will pursue an individual case or that you will recover money. The FBI’s victim guidance explains the information to provide and the role of reporting.

Watch for recovery scams

After a loss, be wary of anyone—whether they claim to represent law enforcement, a business, or a law firm—who says they can recover your funds in exchange for a fee. Recovery scammers often seek more money without intending to return anything. The FBI warns: “Be wary of anyone claiming they can recover your funds, as this may be another scam.” Read its cryptocurrency investment fraud guidance.

How widespread are social-media investment scams?

In data released in April 2026, the FTC reported that nearly 30% of people who reported scam losses said the scam started on social media in 2025. Reported social-media scam losses reached $2.1 billion that year, including $1.1 billion in reported losses to investment scams originating on social media. These figures represent reported losses, not every incident or all actual losses. The figures are from the FTC’s April 2026 data announcement.

The CFTC, citing FBI figures, reported nearly $4 billion in losses to relationship investment scams in 2023. That total covers the broader relationship-investment scam category; it is not a cryptocurrency-only figure. See the CFTC’s 2025 relationship investment scam alert.
