A convincing face or voice does not prove an investment pitch is genuine. Treat odd media details as reasons to pause—not as a reliable authentication test. Before sending money or personal information, verify the person through a trusted channel you find independently, check the relevant professional and firm records, and evaluate the investment’s terms and risks separately from its presentation.
The registration checks below apply to U.S. advisers and brokers. Readers elsewhere should use their own country’s official financial regulator and fraud-reporting channels.
What does a deepfake investment pitch look like?
A deepfake is audio or video altered or generated with AI to imitate a real person. A scam pitch may show a celebrity or company executive endorsing an exclusive opportunity, promising guaranteed returns, or urging viewers to act before a deadline. A polished website linked from the video can be part of the same scheme, built to collect deposits and then disappear. FINRA describes these tactics.
The video may be only one piece of a larger fraud. Scammers may impersonate government officials, fabricate a CEO announcement to manipulate a stock, or use fake websites and marketing materials. The FBI has also warned about investment-club promotions using fake or bot accounts and impersonations of legitimate brokerages or known analysts. In some cryptocurrency schemes, a relationship is built first, then the victim is steered toward AI trading programs, short-term trades, quantitative strategies, or gold futures. A real person on a call can still be involved in a scam.

How can I tell if an investment video is fake?
Look for warning signs, but do not treat any visual or audio clue as proof. Possible anomalies include an out-of-sync mouth, stiff expressions, odd pauses, robotic pacing, mispronounced names, unnatural responses to interruptions, inconsistent background noise, strange lighting or shadows, irregular facial details, or unusual movement. A speaker’s refusal to perform a reasonable simple action—such as moving the camera—may add to your concern.
These clues are not a pass/fail test. The FBI says AI-generated content has advanced to the point that it can be difficult to identify, and cloned voices may sound nearly identical to the real person. The FTC notes that detection effectiveness varies; watermarks can be altered or removed, and false positives can cause harm. A detector result, watermark, visual inspection, or live-video challenge cannot establish that an investment pitch is authentic.

What warning signs matter more than the media?
Behavior and the requested action are often more useful reasons to stop than how convincing the video looks. Be especially cautious when the contact:
- Arrives unexpectedly through social media, text, or a call.
- Creates extreme urgency, asks you to keep the offer secret, or resists reasonable identity checks.
- Pushes you to another messaging platform or blames technical problems when you ask to verify.
- Requests login details, personal information, authentication codes, account access, or an immediate transfer.
FINRA advises never sharing verification codes or personal information by phone or text, and recommends calling back using a trusted number rather than one supplied in a suspicious message. Its guidance puts the principle plainly: “If a request involves money, account or device credentials/access, or sensitive information, always verify through a different, trusted channel.”

How do I verify an investment professional and offer?
- Stop the transaction. Do not transfer money, securities, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or account access while under pressure. Do not give a caller or texter passwords, personal details, or authentication codes.
- Contact the person or firm independently. Do not use the suspicious message’s link, QR code, or phone number. Find contact details on the organization’s official website or use a contact method you have already verified. FINRA recommends comparing an investment professional’s details with those disclosed in the firm’s Form CRS.
- Check both the individual and the firm in official records. For U.S. readers, Investor.gov’s Ask and Check tool connects to IAPD for investment advisers and FINRA BrokerCheck for brokers and brokerage firms. Review registration status, background, and disclosures; consider checking with the relevant state securities regulator as well.
- Investigate the offer separately. Search the company and program name alongside words such as “review,” “complaint,” “scam,” or “fraud.” Verify claims through independent sources, and understand exactly what is being offered, its terms, and its risks. Do not rely on a newsletter, blog, testimonial, video, or AI-generated answer as your sole basis for investing.
- Do not mistake paperwork for approval. A claimed SEC filing, Form D, press release, or certificate does not prove an investment or seller is registered, licensed, or approved. Investor.gov says the SEC does not issue registration certificates; check claims through the official lookup.
- Bring in an independent person. If the pitch demands secrecy, pause and discuss it with someone you trust or a qualified registered professional who is not connected to the offer. FINRA advises taking time to verify even when a plea feels urgent.
A registration match or clean record is not a guarantee that a particular investment is sound. Identity, registration and disclosure history, offer documentation, payment requests, and media clues are separate pieces of evidence; the media is the least conclusive of them.
Is this celebrity investment ad real?
A celebrity’s recognizable face or voice is not enough to establish that they endorsed an investment. Search for confirmation through the person’s verified official channels and the company’s own independently located website, but do not treat a matching post or polished landing page as proof by itself. Then verify the seller and the offer using the steps above. FINRA warns that celebrity deepfake videos can promote exclusive opportunities or guaranteed returns; those claims deserve scrutiny regardless of who appears in the ad.

What should I do if I already responded?
- Stop communicating through the suspicious channel. If you shared credentials, contact the affected institution through independently sourced contact details and take its recommended account-protection steps.
- Contact any affected bank, brokerage, payment service, or platform promptly using its official contact information.
- Preserve messages, account names, phone numbers, links, payment instructions, and transaction records for reports and follow-up.
- Report suspected internet-enabled investment fraud to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. The FTC also accepts consumer scam reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Do not pay a recovery service that promises to retrieve lost funds. The FBI warns that recovery offers can themselves be scams.
How common are investment scams?
Reported-loss figures show the scale of the problem, but they measure reports, not every loss or every deepfake pitch. The FTC said consumers reported losing $4.6 billion to investment scams in 2023, more than to any other fraud category. The FBI reported at least a 300% increase in victim complaints referencing ramp-and-dump stock fraud in 2025 compared with 2024; that figure concerns a particular stock-manipulation scheme, not deepfake pitches generally. In its 2026 reporting on 2025 complaints, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported more than $632 million in investment-complaint losses with an AI nexus, while overall investment-scam losses exceeded $8 billion. These complaint-reported amounts are not a complete count of all losses.
