There is no reliable visual or audio tell that proves a political image, recording, or clip was made with AI. Before sharing one, check who first published it, separate the media from the claim attached to it, look for disclosure or provenance information, and verify election claims with trusted official sources. Treat odd details and detector scores as reasons to investigate—not as verdicts.
Start by checking the claim and its source
Political synthetic media is a real influence tactic: the FBI and CISA have warned that foreign actors use generative tools to spread synthetic images and deepfake audio and video. That warning describes a tactic; it does not show that a particular viral post is fake or that every alarming post is part of an organized operation. FBI and CISA’s October 18, 2024 public service announcement advises viewers to consider who produced content and look for labels identifying it as AI-generated.
First write down exactly what the post claims. Then distinguish that claim from what the media itself shows or says. A genuine clip can be old, cropped, mislabeled, or shared without context; whether AI was used is a separate question from whether the caption is accurate.

Check the original publisher, posting date, account identity, and whether later reposts changed the caption. An account’s name or profile image alone does not establish that it is authentic.
- Verify the underlying election claim. Look for confirmation from trusted local or state election sources. The FBI and CISA specifically direct people to official election sources for accurate information.
- Compare with independent reporting. For a recording attributed to a public figure, look for the same statement or event through an official channel or reliable reporting. Lack of immediate confirmation does not prove the clip is fake, but it is a reason not to share it as established fact.
Inspect images, audio, and video as clues—not proof
Unusual scene details, lighting, edits, or a voice that seems inconsistent may justify closer checking. None is a dependable stand-alone test. A convincing file can be manipulated, and a strange-looking or sounding detail can have an ordinary explanation. The FBI/CISA guidance and the Brennan Center’s guidance on deceptive AI-generated election information emphasize source verification and caution about detection limits, not a universal checklist of visual or audio defects.

- For an image: examine the full frame and the post around it, not just one zoomed-in detail. Check whether the scene and caption are corroborated elsewhere.
- For audio: compare the claimed speaker and circumstances with independent reporting or an official channel. A voice impression by itself cannot establish who spoke or whether a recording was altered.
- For video: consider whether the clip is complete and whether its sound and visible events fit together. Seek the longer recording or independent accounts before drawing conclusions from an excerpt.
Understand labels and Content Credentials
Look for a platform disclosure or a Content Credential, then inspect what information it provides. C2PA describes Content Credentials as provenance information—details about a digital file’s origin and history—not a certification that its contents or accompanying political claim are true. Its C2PA specification 2.2 explainer also says that adding provenance is optional. A file without credentials is therefore not, for that reason alone, synthetic or less trustworthy.
Labels and platform policies can change, and a disclosure may tell you only what the service or credential records. Treat it as useful context, then verify the claim independently.

Use AI detectors cautiously
Automated tools can make mistakes. The Brennan Center advises against relying too heavily on detectors or provenance when judging political content. If you consult a detector, check whether it explains the possibility of error and reports how confident its result is. Treat the output as one uncertain input alongside source, context, and corroboration—not as proof to accuse a person or campaign or to declare a claim true or false. No specific detector is recommended here as suitable for general readers.

Save evidence and report suspected incidents
If a post may matter to an election or could disappear or change, preserve what you saw before reporting it. Brennan Center guidance for election officials recommends documenting suspected incidents from first observation, and the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s AI and election-administration resource provides election-focused information for officials.

- Save the post’s URL and capture screenshots or a screen recording showing the account, caption, and date where available.
- Keep the original file if you can obtain it, rather than relying only on a repost or a cropped excerpt.
- Use the platform’s reporting process and appropriate local or official reporting channels. The FBI/CISA notice directs suspicious or criminal election activity to the appropriate authorities.
The cited election guidance is U.S.-focused; reporting routes and election authorities differ elsewhere. For voters, the practical rule is the same: do not pass along an unverified allegation as fact.
