Before buying a sealed Pokémon TCG Elite Trainer Box (ETB), compare it with official images of the same set and edition, inspect the packaging for inconsistencies, and evaluate the seller, provenance, price, and return terms. These checks can reveal warning signs, but there is no universal visual test that proves a sealed ETB is genuine.
Start with the exact ETB, not a generic box comparison
Packaging varies by set and edition, so first identify the product in the listing: its set, product version, and regional edition. Then compare it with Pokémon’s official product images. Pokémon Support recommends becoming familiar with images of official products; its guidance was updated May 26, 2026. See Pokémon’s counterfeit-card guidance.
Compare the artwork, logos, wording, and visible contents. A difference may have an ordinary explanation, such as a different edition, but a mismatch that cannot be explained by the exact product reference is a reason to ask the seller questions.
Inspect the listing and packaging for clues
Ask for photos of the actual box
For a remote purchase, ask for clear, current photos of all sides, corners, and visible seams. Confirm that the pictures show the item being sold rather than only generic product imagery. Photos can help you notice inconsistencies, but they cannot reveal every issue with a sealed product.

Look for inconsistencies, not one magic tell
Check printed details, wording, artwork, and the condition of the wrap and seals. Specialist and marketplace guides discuss these features as clues in examples of counterfeit or resealed products, not as rules that apply identically to every ETB. Cardmarket’s guide and TCGplayer’s guide can help frame inspection questions.
An unusual seam, wrap texture, or seal is a prompt to investigate—not proof on its own. The available guidance does not establish an official universal ETB weight, dimension, seal, or shrink-wrap specification, so do not treat any one of those details as a conclusive test.

Judge the seller and the deal as well as the box
- Seller history: Review feedback and how long the seller has been active, where available.
- Provenance: Ask where the box came from and whether the seller can explain its history.
- Price: Compare current offers for the same set and edition, rather than a different ETB. An unusually low price is a reason to investigate further, not an automatic verdict. Pokémon’s explicit warning about prices dramatically below suggested retail concerns booster packs; it does not set a numeric price threshold for ETBs.
- Recourse: Check the return terms before paying, especially if the seller cannot resolve your questions.
Pokémon Support says it receives the highest reported instances of counterfeit sales originating from flea markets, but does not give a count or percentage. Treat the buying venue as context, not as proof that a particular item is fake or genuine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A counterfeit box and a genuine box that has been opened and resealed are different concerns. Secondary guides discuss both, but listing photos may not establish which situation applies—or settle authenticity at all. Several matching product details and a credible seller can reduce concern; they do not amount to a guarantee.

Do not use Pokémon’s flashlight advice as an ETB test. Pokémon says counterfeit cards are often visible when held up to bright light; that advice is about cards, not a still-sealed box. Its Support article also warns that fake booster packs can be difficult to distinguish from real ones, but that statement is about booster packs rather than ETBs.

If questions remain, contact a reputable local trading-card shop and ask whether it will assess an unopened ETB and what its assessment can establish. Pokémon recommends asking a trading-card specialist to evaluate potentially counterfeit cards; confirm directly that the shop’s service covers sealed boxes.
