If a large WordPress export will not upload or import, first confirm it is a WordPress eXtended RSS (WXR) file. If you can use WP-CLI, create smaller export files with wp export --max_file_size=<MB>; if you already have one oversized WXR file, split it with a WXR-aware tool rather than cutting it into arbitrary byte ranges. You can also ask your host about PHP memory limits. Before retrying a failed import, check whether it already added content.
Confirm the XML is a WordPress export
WordPress uses WordPress eXtended RSS (WXR) for its content exports, and the WordPress importer accepts valid WXR files. An XML file from another platform is not necessarily WXR and may not work in the importer without conversion. See the WP-CLI import command reference and export command reference.
Why a large import can fail
An oversized import can exhaust PHP memory. A browser-based upload may also run into upload-size or PHP configuration limits. Those limits depend on the hosting environment, so there is no universal file size that guarantees an import will succeed. WordPress recommends raising the memory limit when possible or dividing the import into smaller files; its handbook gives Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted. as an example error. Choose a way to split or process the file

If you are creating a fresh export with WP-CLI
Run wp export --max_file_size=<MB> to set a maximum file size for each WXR export file. The WP-CLI command reference documents a default of 15 MB. This is an export setting—not a universal import limit or a guarantee that every host can process a file of that size. The command can generate one or more WXR files.

The export command also has options affecting which export sections appear only in the first file. If you are working with split exports that share terms or navigation data, check the command reference for the exact behavior before choosing options: wp export.
If you already have an oversized WXR file
Use a WXR-aware splitter or another method that preserves valid XML and WordPress export data. Do not divide the file at arbitrary byte positions: a cut can land inside a tag or record and leave fragments the importer cannot use. WordPress’s documentation mentions a WXR splitter utility, but does not establish that it is currently maintained or suitable for every file; verify a tool’s current condition and output before relying on it.

If you have shell access and want to avoid browser upload
WP-CLI can import one or more WXR files, and its command reference also accepts directories. For example, you can pass a WXR file to wp import rather than upload it through the WordPress admin interface. This avoids the browser upload route but does not remove the need for sufficient server resources. See wp import.
If you cannot split the file or use the command line
Ask your hosting provider whether it can raise the PHP memory limit or help run the import. WordPress recommends consulting the host when limits prevent an import, particularly in shared-hosting environments: WordPress importer guidance.

Import in a way that fits the migration
WP-CLI’s importer includes controls for author mapping, skipping attachments or image resizing, rewriting old-site URLs in imported content, and using a local directory for attachment files already available on the server. These options are situational: skipping attachments or resizing changes what the import does. Choose flags only when they match your migration plan, and check the current syntax in the WP-CLI import reference.

A failed import may have created records before it stopped. WordPress warns that retrying after resolving an error can create duplicates. Review the target site for partially imported content and remove or otherwise address it as appropriate before running the import again. See WordPress’s importing-content guidance.
