To put a WordPress post or page title on two lines, first decide whether you want it to wrap naturally or break at a specific word. Natural wrapping is controlled by the title’s width and typography. A deliberate break is theme- and editor-dependent: the core Title block has no documented manual line-break control.

Choose between natural wrapping and a fixed break

If you only need a long heading to fit neatly, let it wrap naturally by adjusting its available width or typography. If it must break after a particular word, you need a theme or markup approach that supports that presentation; WordPress does not provide one universal setting for it.

  • Natural wrap: The line changes as the available width and typography change, so it can adapt to different screens.
  • Fixed break: The break is tied to a chosen point, but may look awkward at other screen sizes unless the theme handles those sizes deliberately.

Use the Title block’s styling options

In a block theme, select the Title block that displays the post or page title and inspect its settings. WordPress describes this as the block that displays the title of a post or page. Its documented advanced settings include an additional CSS class and Additional CSS, but not a manual split control. See the WordPress Title block documentation.

For a natural wrap, adjust the title’s width or typography using the controls your theme exposes. For a chosen break, use a theme-specific style or template implementation that targets the title markup. The exact CSS depends on the theme and the markup it outputs, so a generic rule cannot be guaranteed to work across WordPress sites. If you add a CSS class to the block, confirm that your theme’s styles target that class and the intended title instance.

Make the layout responsive when needed

WordPress documents responsive styles for block themes running WordPress 7.1 or later. These styles can provide breakpoint-specific overrides for supported properties; themes may customize the viewport widths. They are not documented as a direct control for inserting a line break. Check the responsive styles documentation and your theme’s available controls before relying on a particular breakpoint.

If the chosen break should appear only on larger screens, implement that behavior through your theme’s responsive styling rather than assuming a line-break setting exists in the editor. Test the heading at the screen sizes your site supports.

Why typing <br> in the title usually is not the answer

A WordPress support-forum response suggests that a literal <br> can split a title where unfiltered HTML is allowed, but also says HTML cannot be added to the title using the block editor. That makes it a conditional option, not a reliable instruction for the standard title field. Do not assume that entering markup in the post or page title will create a line break; your site may reject it or display it as text. See the WordPress support response.

Check that you are changing the visible heading

The visible heading on the page and the HTML <title> in the document head are different outputs. WordPress’s wp_title filter affects the document title, not the visible post, page, or category heading. Changing that filter will not generally split the heading shown in the page content. See the WordPress developer reference for wp_title.

Pick the method that matches your site

Method Best for Important limitation
Adjust width or typography A heading that should wrap naturally The wrapping point depends on available space and typography.
Theme or template styling A chosen break or a site-specific title layout Implementation depends on the theme’s markup; there is no universal CSS rule.
Responsive styles Different supported styles at different screen sizes in a block theme Requires WordPress 7.1 or later and a block theme; it is not a dedicated line-break control.
Literal <br> Only a setup that permits unfiltered HTML in title content The normal block editor does not provide HTML entry in the title field, according to the cited support response.

For a classic theme or a page builder, use that theme or builder’s own title-layout controls; the WordPress block documentation does not establish a universal procedure for those setups.
