The result should be one PDF for each page in the original—not a few larger PDFs divided into sections.
Choose the right kind of split
“Split a PDF” can mean several different things. Before you start, decide what the output should contain:
- One PDF per page: Choose an every-page split, or extract the pages as separate files.
- A few multi-page PDFs: Split by a page count, file size, or bookmarks where the tool supports those options.
- Only selected pages: Extract the pages you need rather than splitting the entire document.
This guide focuses on the first case. Keep the original PDF unchanged and direct the new files to a separate output folder.
Best free local option: PDFsam Basic
PDFsam Basic is the most directly documented choice here for making one file per page without uploading the PDF. Its publisher describes it as free and open source, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with files processed locally rather than uploaded. That is the publisher’s description of its data handling, not an independent security audit.

- Install and open PDFsam Basic on the computer that holds the PDF.
- Add the source PDF to the split workflow.
- Choose the option to split at every page. Do not choose every-N-pages unless you intend to make multi-page sections.
- Select an output folder separate from the source file’s folder if practical.
- Run the split, then compare the number of generated PDFs with the number of pages in the source.
- Open a few outputs—including the first and last—and confirm that each contains one page and the expected content.
PDFsam Basic also documents splits by even or odd pages, page numbers, every N pages, file size, and bookmarks. These modes solve different problems: for example, an every-N-pages split groups pages, while an every-page split creates an individual file for each page.
Use Acrobat desktop to extract pages as separate files
Acrobat desktop has a separate extraction workflow for making individual files from selected pages. Adobe’s documented path is Organize Pages > Extract Pages.
- Open the PDF in Acrobat desktop and choose Organize Pages.
- Select Extract Pages.
- Choose the page or page range to extract. To make a file for every page, select the desired pages and enable Extract pages as separate files.
- Run the extraction and save the output files in a location you can find.
- Check the output count and open sample files to confirm they contain one page apiece.
Extraction and splitting are related but not identical operations in Acrobat. Adobe also documents a Organize Pages > Split tool for dividing a PDF by number of pages, file size, or top-level bookmarks. That tool includes output destination and naming options. Choose the extraction option when you specifically want separate page files; use Split when you want to define groups or another split rule.

Adobe says extraction preserves page content, form fields, comments, and links. It does not extract bookmarks or article threads associated with the pages. If those navigation structures matter, inspect the output and plan to recreate or preserve them by another authorized method.

Use Acrobat on the web if uploading is acceptable
Acrobat’s web split workflow is an option when you are comfortable uploading the document. The workflow lets you select divider lines in the PDF, then saves the resulting files to Adobe cloud storage. Adobe Help Center’s 2026 instructions say that up to 22 divider lines can be selected, depending on the PDF’s page count. That is a limit of the documented web interface, not a general limit for PDF splitting.
Because this approach uploads the source and stores outputs in Adobe cloud storage, consider your organization’s data-handling rules before using it for private or regulated documents. If you need many single-page outputs, a desktop workflow may be more practical than selecting dividers individually.

Which workflow should you use?

What about macOS Preview?
Adobe’s online product page describes a Preview route on Mac: show the PDF’s thumbnails, then drag selected pages to the desktop or another folder. This is a potential built-in option, but the steps have not been confirmed against Apple’s own documentation or every macOS version. Check the current Preview interface before relying on it, especially if you need to extract every page into its own file rather than move a selection together.
Check the results before deleting or sharing anything
A successful-looking operation is not enough to establish that the output matches your goal. Use these checks before you replace, send, or archive the original:
- Count the files: For a complete one-page-per-file split, the output count should equal the source page count. If it does not, check the selected pages and split mode.
- Check file contents: Open several output PDFs. Confirm that each has one page and that page order and content look right.
- Check the names: Use names that make order clear, such as a consistent page number sequence. If the tool offers a naming convention, set it before running a large job.
- Keep the original: Save outputs separately until you have checked them. Do not assume the tool preserved a copy of the source.
- Consider document structure: If comments, links, form fields, bookmarks, or article threads are important, verify which elements survived in the files you plan to use.
Troubleshooting common problems
The tool made several multi-page PDFs instead of one PDF per page
The selected mode may have been a page-count split, an every-N-pages split, or a custom divider workflow. Reopen the original and select every page in PDFsam Basic or Extract pages as separate files in Acrobat. Check the output folder first so a second run does not leave old and new results mixed together.

The number of output files does not match the source page count
Confirm that you included every page, selected the intended mode, and chose the correct source PDF. A workflow that extracts selected pages will produce files only for the pages selected. If you rerun the task, use a clean destination folder or remove only the prior generated files after confirming they are not needed.
Acrobat will not extract or split the PDF
The document may have restrictions that prevent editing or extraction. Adobe’s extraction help directs users to inspect the document’s Security properties for restrictions. If the file is protected, use an authorized workflow or ask the document owner for an unrestricted copy; do not try to bypass protections.
Important bookmarks are missing
Acrobat does not extract bookmarks or article threads associated with pages during page extraction. If navigation matters, retain the original and check whether your intended output workflow preserves the required structure; do not assume that separate page files will retain it.

You are unsure where the new files went
Check the destination configured in the split or extraction settings, along with the folder used by the application’s save step. In Acrobat desktop, set an explicit output destination and naming convention before running the operation. In Acrobat on the web, look for the results in Adobe cloud storage.
You need to split a sensitive document
Prefer a local desktop workflow when your rules do not allow upload. PDFsam states that it processes files locally and does not upload them. Acrobat’s web workflow uploads the document and saves outputs to Adobe cloud storage. Follow your employer’s or client’s data rules, and do not treat a vendor statement as an independent security review.
