To speed up Selenium tests, first remove avoidable waiting, then run independent tests concurrently, and use Selenium Grid when one machine cannot provide enough browser capacity. The right settings depend on your application and infrastructure; there is no universal safe thread count or guaranteed speedup. Measure suite time, stability, and resource use before and after each change.

Find out where the suite is spending time

Start with a representative run in the same environment you will use to evaluate changes. Record wall-clock duration, failures and retries, and machine utilization. Keep the browser, application build, test data, and runner settings consistent between comparisons.

Separate time spent waiting for the application from time spent exercising it. Long fixed sleeps, navigation waits for assets a test does not use, and an underutilized runner are possible sources of avoidable elapsed time. A slow application action, by contrast, may be real work the test must still verify.

Selenium’s Grid documentation gives the illustrative relationship Number of Tests * Average Test Time / Number of Nodes = Total Execution Time. It is arithmetic to explain distribution, not a benchmark or a promise: tests differ in duration, setup overhead, contention, and the amount of work that can safely run at once. See When to Use Grid.

Replace fixed sleeps with condition-based waits

A fixed sleep pauses for a predetermined duration whether the page is ready sooner or still not ready when the pause ends. Prefer a wait for the specific condition the next action requires—for example, an element becoming visible or clickable—so the test proceeds as soon as that condition is met and still handles slower responses.

Timing races are a common source of flaky tests. Selenium’s guidance is explicit: “Do not mix implicit and explicit waits.” Combining them can produce unpredictable wait times. Choose a consistent synchronization approach, and make each wait match the application state the test needs. See Selenium Waiting Strategies.

Choose a navigation readiness strategy deliberately

WebDriver’s default normal page-load strategy waits for the document’s ready state to reach complete. If a test needs the DOM but does not depend on images or other late-loading assets, evaluate eager, which returns at interactive. none does not wait for a ready-state value.

These alternatives can help when slow assets are irrelevant to the assertion, but they do not make a dynamic page ready for every interaction. With eager or especially none, add deliberate condition-based synchronization for the specific elements or data the test uses. Keep the default when later page activity is part of what the test must verify. See Selenium Browser Options.

Run independent Selenium tests in parallel

Parallelism reduces elapsed time only when tests can run independently and the runner, browser sessions, application, and test data can support the extra concurrency. Tests that change shared accounts, records, or application state may interfere with one another; isolate their data or keep them sequential where necessary.

JUnit Jupiter

JUnit Jupiter runs tests sequentially by default. Parallel execution is opt-in through its configuration. Enable it only after checking test isolation, then increase concurrency cautiously while observing failures and resource use. The JUnit documentation describes the parallel execution configuration: JUnit Jupiter parallel execution.

TestNG

TestNG supports parallel execution modes and a configurable thread count. Select the mode that matches the test structure, and start with a conservative thread count rather than assuming the machine can handle an arbitrary number of sessions. The documentation covers available modes and configuration: TestNG documentation.

Runner parallelism controls how much work the suite submits concurrently; it does not guarantee that the browser or application can execute that work efficiently. If more threads increase contention, retries, or failures without reducing elapsed time, reduce concurrency and investigate the bottleneck.

Distribute browser sessions with Selenium Grid

Selenium Grid runs WebDriver scripts on remote machines and can distribute sessions across browsers and operating systems. It is useful when a single host is the constraint or when the test matrix needs browser and platform coverage beyond that host. Grid distribution and runner parallelism are complementary: a parallel runner can request concurrent sessions that Grid schedules across available nodes.

Grid capacity is not determined by a universal sessions-per-machine formula. Selenium identifies browser and operating-system coverage, concurrent sessions, machine count, CPU, and RAM as relevant sizing factors. Its getting-started guidance offers roughly one CPU and one gigabyte of RAM per browser as a reference, while advising teams to measure performance and warning that defaults may not suit every context. Treat that figure as a starting reference, not a capacity guarantee. See Grid sizing guidance.

Grid’s own applicability guidance explains when distribution can help and provides illustrative execution-time arithmetic; it does not establish a speedup for your suite. Measure session throughput and machine utilization under your actual browser mix and test workload: When to Use Grid.

How many parallel sessions should you use?

There is no generally safe number. Begin below the apparent capacity of the runner and browser hosts, then raise concurrency in measured increments. At each setting, record elapsed time, failures and retries, CPU and memory use, and whether the application or shared test data becomes a bottleneck.

  • If failures or retries rise, check for shared-state collisions and overloaded browsers or application services before adding more sessions.

Choose a level that balances reliable results with the required elapsed time, and revisit it when the browser matrix, application, or infrastructure changes.

Or skip the browser setup

For website screenshots used in visual checks or test documentation, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API; it does not run Selenium tests or replace browser automation. Its API can return an image or PDF, and its options include waits, selector capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, and device presets. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners are accepted and removed along with known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshoot speed changes that do not help

The suite is still slow after removing sleeps

Check whether the replacement waits target the state needed by the next action or whether navigation is still waiting for assets the test requires. A condition that never becomes true can still consume the full timeout; confirm the selector and expected state against the page.

Parallel execution makes tests flaky

Look for tests sharing accounts, records, files, or other mutable state. Isolate test data where possible, lower concurrency, and inspect whether browser or application resources are saturated. Do not treat retries as a speed improvement; track them alongside elapsed time.

Grid adds sessions but not throughput

Compare node CPU and RAM use, concurrent session demand, browser and operating-system mix, and the host running the test client. More nodes cannot eliminate serial test dependencies, and adding sessions can worsen contention if a node or the application is already at capacity.

Navigation returns before an interaction works

This can happen when using eager or none on a page whose needed controls are not yet ready. Wait for the specific element or state before interacting, or use normal if the test needs full document completion.

Keep optimization evidence-based

Selenium provides tools for automating user interactions; it does not ensure that a suite is well architected. Its test-practices guidance puts that distinction plainly: “Selenium provides tools to make functional user interaction easier, but does not help you write well-architected test suites.” See Selenium Test Practices. Keep measuring comparable runs, preserve meaningful assertions, and prefer changes that reduce waiting or safely expose independent work rather than weakening what the tests verify.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use runner parallelism and Selenium Grid together?

Yes. The runner can execute independent tests concurrently, while Grid provides remote browser sessions for those tests to use.

Does a faster suite mean I should remove waits?

No. Remove arbitrary delay where a condition-based wait is appropriate, but retain synchronization for every application state the test depends on.
