Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The biggest repeat-load gains usually come from reusing one browser process and, when state may persist, one page; keeping Puppeteer’s cache enabled; and waiting for the exact content your task needs instead of waiting for every request to stop. Do not expect a universal percentage improvement: Puppeteer’s official API documentation describes these behaviors but does not publish a benchmark. Measure startup, navigation, readiness, and extraction separately on your site and machine.
Use one browser and page for the batch
Launching Chromium is work you only need once for a group of captures. Create a Browser once, create a Page once when cookies, local storage, and other state should carry forward, and navigate that page repeatedly. Puppeteer documents that one browser can contain multiple pages, so you can also keep a browser alive while assigning separate pages to concurrent or isolated jobs.
Reusable navigation example
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const urls = [
'https://example.com/first',
'https://example.com/second',
'https://example.com/third'
];
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({headless: true});
const page = await browser.newPage();
try {
for (const url of urls) {
const started = performance.now();
await page.goto(url, {waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 45_000});
await page.locator('main').wait();
const title = await page.title();
console.log({url, title, milliseconds: Math.round(performance.now() - started)});
}
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
This example intentionally separates navigation from the application’s readiness signal. Replace main with an element that proves the output you need is available. If each URL must have clean cookies or storage, create a separate browser context or page deliberately and measure that isolation cost rather than assuming it is free.
When a single page is the wrong choice
- Use separate contexts when users, tenants, authentication sessions, or test cases must not share cookies and storage.
- Use separate pages when jobs can run concurrently and the site can tolerate that concurrency.
- Use a fresh page when the application accumulates state, memory, event listeners, or service-worker data that changes later results.
The documentation establishes the Browser/Page structure, but it does not rank context-isolation strategies or quantify their overhead. Treat the choice as a correctness decision first, then benchmark it.

Keep the browser cache available
Puppeteer caching is enabled by default. The page.setCacheEnabled() API says it “Toggles ignoring cache for each request based on the enabled state. By default, caching is enabled.” Calling page.setCacheEnabled(false) makes requests ignore the cache, which is useful for freshness tests but normally counterproductive for repeated loads.
Check the conditions that defeat reuse
- Do not disable caching in setup code unless the test specifically requires it.
- Confirm that you are reusing the same page or an appropriately persistent context; a brand-new isolated context will not have the same state.
- Remember that the site’s HTTP cache headers, service workers, authentication, and application logic determine what can actually be reused.
- Keep cache state consistent while comparing runs. Mixing cached and uncached runs makes timing conclusions unreliable.
Puppeteer documents the toggle, not a cache-hit rate for your target. A cache can reduce transfer and parsing work, but it cannot make a page fresh when the application deliberately revalidates every resource.
Wait for the output, not for a quiet network
A broad networkidle condition is often slower than necessary and can be incorrect for applications that poll, stream, maintain analytics connections, or open WebSockets. Puppeteer’s waitForNetworkIdle() documentation states that “The function will always wait at least the set IdleTime.” The currently documented default idle floor is 500 milliseconds.
Choose a readiness condition
| Condition | Use it when | Risk |
|---|---|---|
domcontentloaded |
The required markup is present without waiting for every image or third-party request. | Client-rendered content may not exist yet. |
| A required selector or locator | A specific card, table, heading, or status element proves the result is ready. | The selector can become stale if the application changes. |
| An application state condition | A loading flag, status text, or JavaScript state directly represents completion. | Requires a stable, testable application contract. |
networkidle |
Network quiet genuinely means all required work is done. | Persistent requests can delay it indefinitely, and the idle floor adds latency. |
Selector-based readiness
await page.goto(url, {waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 45_000});
await page.locator('[data-testid="report-ready"]').wait({timeout: 20_000});
const rows = await page.locator('table tbody tr').allTextContents();
Puppeteer’s interaction guide recommends locators for interaction. Its lower-level selector waits remain useful when you need direct control, but element handles returned by lower-level APIs should be disposed of when you retain them; otherwise repeated work can accumulate memory.

Use network idle only with a reason
await page.goto(url, {waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'});
await page.waitForNetworkIdle({idleTime: 250, timeout: 20_000});
A shorter idle time is not automatically correct. It can return before a late request populates the content you extract. Tie the value to an observed application behavior and verify the output, not merely the elapsed time.
Leave request interception off unless it earns its cost
Request interception pauses requests until they are handled or allowed to continue, which can affect performance. Puppeteer also notes that authentication turns interception on behind the scenes. If you do not need to block, mock, rewrite, or inspect requests, do not enable it.
Filtering example when filtering is actually required
await page.setRequestInterception(true);
page.on('request', request => {
const type = request.resourceType();
if (type === 'image' || type === 'font') {
request.abort();
} else {
request.continue();
}
});
Every intercepted request must reach continue(), abort(), or respond(). A missed path leaves the request stalled. Blocking images or fonts may speed a page but can invalidate screenshots, layout measurements, or visual tests, so measure correctness alongside latency.

- Record the Puppeteer and Chrome versions, machine, network conditions, URL set, repetition count, cache setting, browser context strategy, and readiness condition.
- Time browser launch separately from page creation.
- Time navigation until the chosen readiness signal.
- Time extraction, screenshot, or PDF generation separately.
- Run enough repetitions to expose cold and warm behavior, and report distributions such as median and tail latency rather than one favorable run.
- Change one variable at a time: reuse, cache setting, wait condition, interception, or concurrency.
A simple stage timer
const t0 = performance.now();
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({headless: true});
const t1 = performance.now();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto(url, {waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'});
const t2 = performance.now();
await page.locator('[data-testid="ready"]').wait();
const t3 = performance.now();
await page.screenshot({path: 'result.png'});
const t4 = performance.now();
console.log({
launchMs: Math.round(t1 - t0),
navigationMs: Math.round(t2 - t1),
readinessMs: Math.round(t3 - t2),
captureMs: Math.round(t4 - t3)
});
await browser.close();
Keep cold-start and warm-repeat results distinct. Reusing a browser can make a batch faster simply by amortizing launch work; it does not prove that the target page itself became faster.
Reliability and correctness trade-offs
Freshness versus speed
Cache reuse can serve a previously stored resource. If your purpose is a freshness check, disable or control caching for that experiment and label the result accordingly. If your purpose is repeated extraction or screenshots, leave caching enabled unless the site’s behavior requires otherwise.
State persistence versus isolation
A reused page carries cookies, local storage, permissions, and sometimes application state. That can be exactly what a logged-in workflow needs, or it can leak one test into the next. Make the state boundary explicit and include it in your benchmark.
Readiness versus latency
The fastest completion signal is useless if it captures a skeleton screen. Assert that the extracted result is non-empty or that a page-specific ready marker exists. Conversely, waiting for global network quiet can waste time after the required output is already correct.

Troubleshooting repeated-load slowdowns
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Every iteration is as slow as the first | Browser is launched inside the loop, or cache is disabled. | Move launch() outside the loop; verify setCacheEnabled(true) or omit the call. |
| Run hangs at network idle | Polling, streaming, analytics, or a socket keeps requests active. | Wait for a task-specific selector or application state instead. |
Data is missing after switching to domcontentloaded |
Client rendering finishes after the DOM event. | Wait for the actual result selector or readiness state. |
| Requests never finish after enabling interception | A request path was not continued, aborted, or fulfilled. | Handle every request and log the resource type and URL while debugging. |
| Later iterations behave differently | Cookies, storage, service workers, or page state persist. | Reuse state intentionally, clear it between cases, or use an isolated context. |
| Memory grows during a long batch | Retained element handles, listeners, or application state accumulate. | Dispose handles, remove temporary listeners, recycle pages when justified, and compare with a fresh-context run. |
| Authentication changes timing | Authentication may enable request interception. | Account for that behavior, minimize extra interception work, and benchmark authenticated and anonymous runs separately. |

For a single clean screenshot or a service that must scale without maintaining Chromium yourself, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
One GET request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Version and environment notes
Official documentation reviewed for this workflow showed version labels ranging from Puppeteer 25.11.0 to 25.12.0. APIs and defaults can change, so check the documentation that matches the version installed in your project. Record the exact Puppeteer and Chrome versions in performance reports, especially when comparing runs across machines or CI workers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I reuse one page or create a new page for every URL?
Reuse one page when shared cookies and storage are intended. Create separate pages or contexts when jobs need concurrency or isolation, then measure that strategy on your workload.

Is network idle always faster than waiting for a selector?
No. Network idle has a minimum idle wait and can be delayed by persistent connections. A selector or application state is often both faster and more directly tied to correct output.
Does disabling the cache make benchmarks fairer?
Only for a benchmark designed to measure cold or uncached loads. For repeated production work, disabling a cache that would normally be available measures a different workload.
Can request interception improve performance?
It can reduce work when you intentionally block unnecessary resources, but interception itself adds handling overhead and can stall requests. Use it only for a measured, correctness-safe reason.
