To speed up a WordPress site, first find whether the delay comes from the server, page weight, scripts, or layout shifts. Test important pages on mobile and desktop, make one targeted change at a time, then repeat the same tests. That approach is safer and more useful than installing a performance plugin or changing hosts before you know what is slow.

Start by measuring the pages that matter

Test representative pages rather than relying on one homepage score: for example, a home page, an article, and—if your site has them—a product page and checkout. Run tests on mobile and desktop. Record the URL, date, device or test conditions, and whether each result comes from real visitors or a simulated lab run.

Use PageSpeed Insights to see field data when available and diagnostics for a lab test. Chrome DevTools and Search Console can also help surface performance information. Low-traffic pages may not have enough field data to report. Lighthouse is useful for repeatable diagnostics, but its lab conditions are not the same as the range of devices, networks, and interactions real visitors use.

Google assesses Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile, separately for mobile and desktop. The good thresholds are LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, INP of 200 milliseconds or less, and CLS of 0.1 or less. A single lab score is not a substitute for meeting these real-user thresholds. Lighthouse cannot directly measure INP because it does not supply real user interactions; Total Blocking Time (TBT) can serve as a lab proxy for some main-thread blocking, but field data is needed to assess actual INP. See Google’s Web Vitals guidance.

What you see Likely area to investigate What to check
Slow first response Origin server or backend work Time to first byte (TTFB), hosting resource limits, server load, and application work
Main content or hero image appears late LCP image discovery, image size, or delivery Whether the image is oversized, delayed, or coming from a slow origin or location
Page responds slowly to taps or clicks JavaScript or other main-thread work Scripts and features that keep the browser busy, using TBT as a lab clue and field INP for real-user responsiveness
Content jumps as the page loads Visual stability Images, embeds, ads, or other content whose space is not reserved before it appears

These are diagnostic hypotheses, not proof of a cause. Google’s LCP guidance recommends using First Contentful Paint (FCP) and TTFB as diagnostic timings; inspect the affected page to confirm what is holding it back.

Reduce page weight and isolate software issues

Resize images and review embeds

Use images sized for the space they occupy, compress unnecessarily large files, and remove images that do not add value. Review video, social, and other embeds too: they can add network requests and scripts beyond the visible content. WordPress identifies image file size, themes, plugins, and the hosting environment among the performance factors to consider in its optimization guidance.

WordPress 6.3 added a high fetch priority to the image it identifies as most likely to be the page’s LCP image. WordPress Core described a typical LCP improvement of 5–10% from that change, but it is a version-specific Core claim, not a guaranteed improvement for every page or site. It also does not make oversized images appropriate; measure the actual page and use suitable image dimensions. Details are in the WordPress 6.3 image-performance note.

Review plugins one at a time

Remove plugins the site no longer needs. If a plugin seems connected to a slowdown, compare performance with and without it in a controlled test, changing only one plugin at a time. Do not disable essential features on a live store, membership site, or other critical service without a safe test environment; use staging where possible and verify that core site functions still work.

Check the theme and keep software supported

A theme can add scripts, styles, and other assets to pages. Compare theme changes on staging against the same pages before switching the live site. Keep WordPress and server software maintained, but check compatibility and supported runtime versions with your host before changing PHP or other server components. Performance advice tied to a specific version can become stale, so do not apply old version recommendations without checking current support.

Choose caching for the work it can avoid

Caching can reduce repeated work, but its layers solve different problems. WordPress’s optimization guide and Hosting Handbook describe these distinctions:

Cache type What it avoids Best fit and constraint
Page cache Regenerating a whole page through PHP and database work on every request Useful for mostly static public pages; logged-in and personalized output needs careful exclusions
Browser cache Re-downloading static assets on repeat visits Uses cache headers for files such as images, stylesheets, and scripts; updates need suitable expiration and cache-busting behavior
Object cache Repeated retrieval of data used by WordPress Can reduce expensive lookups; depends on the application and host’s persistent-cache support
Opcode cache Repeated PHP script compilation Typically a server/runtime concern; ask the host whether it is enabled and supported

A plugin-managed cache may offer configuration control, while a host or server cache may be integrated with the hosting environment and its support. Either way, establish who owns cache purging and how dynamic pages are handled. Avoid stacking overlapping cache plugins and server caches without understanding their interaction.

Shopping carts, checkout, logged-in areas, personalized pages, and frequently updated content may not be safe to serve from the same cached copy as a public article. Scope cache rules carefully, then verify that edits appear and transactions show current information. Cache invalidation—the process of clearing or refreshing stored output—is part of a correct setup, not an optional cleanup step.

Escalate to hosting or a CDN when the measurements point there

When the origin server is slow

If TTFB or server response remains poor after reviewing the application, ask your host about resource limits, current server load, supported runtime versions, page caching, OPcache, and persistent object caching. More capacity or a hosting change is most relevant when the evidence points to constrained server resources or backend response—not simply because a lab score is disappointing.

When visitors or assets are geographically dispersed

A content delivery network (CDN) can distribute static assets closer to visitors and reduce the amount of static-file delivery handled by the origin. It addresses asset delivery and geographic reach; it does not automatically fix slow PHP execution or a poorly optimized page. Evaluate which assets the CDN will serve, where visitors are located, and how it interacts with cache purging and dynamic content.

Hosting, caching, and CDN choices involve different trade-offs: application and server capacity, geographic delivery, compatibility with dynamic pages, support, and operating complexity. Compare options against the bottleneck you measured rather than assuming any one host, plugin, or CDN guarantees a fast site.

Re-test and monitor without chasing a perfect score

  1. Repeat the same page tests, device categories, and conditions you recorded for the baseline.
  2. Compare lab results with lab results and field data with field data; they answer different questions.
  3. Keep a short change log so you can connect improvements or regressions to a plugin, theme, content, cache, or infrastructure change.
  4. Continue monitoring after updates and site changes. Recheck that pages, logins, carts, and other important functions still behave correctly.

WordPress.com’s performance guidance recommends monitoring over time and testing one plugin at a time; it also notes that a perfect Lighthouse score can be difficult to achieve without compromising functionality. Use the scores to find and verify practical improvements, not as a reason to remove features your visitors need.
