To speed up a slow Windows PC without installing anything, first find out whether CPU, memory, disk activity, startup apps, or storage is the likely bottleneck. Then use Windows’ built-in tools to address that cause: review Task Manager, trim unnecessary startup and background activity, check for updates, scan for malware if appropriate, and clear only files you do not need. No single cleanup step fixes every slowdown, and older hardware may limit the improvement.
1. Restart and close what you are not using
Restart the PC once, then open only the apps and browser tabs you need. A restart can clear temporary problems, while closing unused apps frees resources they were using. Avoid ending processes you do not recognize; some are required by Windows or by software you rely on.
2. Find the bottleneck in Task Manager
Task Manager helps distinguish a busy processor from limited memory or heavy disk activity. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then select Processes. Review the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns to see which apps are using the most resources. Select Performance for an overall view of those components.
If a familiar app you are not using is consuming substantial resources, save any work and close it normally. A consistently busy component can point to a different remedy: startup and background apps add load, while storage cleanup is most relevant when the system drive is short on space. Task Manager identifies activity; it does not by itself prove why the PC is slow.

3. Reduce apps that launch or run in the background
Disable unnecessary startup apps
In Task Manager, open Startup apps and review the entries. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need to start automatically. Microsoft notes that startup apps can affect boot time and overall performance; disabling one does not uninstall it, and you can still open it when needed. Restrict background activity where available
Some apps provide a background-permissions setting in Windows Settings. The location and available controls vary by Windows version and app. If you find the setting, restrict background activity only for apps that do not need to sync, send notifications, or perform other work while closed. You can search Settings for the app or its background permissions. Microsoft’s general Windows performance guidance describes this option.
4. Check Windows Update and scan if malware is a possibility
Check for updates
Open Settings and search for Windows Update, then check for available updates. Installing updates can address software issues. Optional driver updates may appear, but do not install every optional driver indiscriminately; use one when it is relevant to a device problem or recommended for your system.

Run a quick security scan
If the slowdown began unexpectedly or you suspect malware, open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, and run a Quick scan. A scan checks for threats; it is not a general performance tune-up. Microsoft includes the scan among its recommended steps for a slow Windows PC.
5. Free system-drive space carefully
When the Windows drive is nearly full, review its contents before deleting anything. On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Storage. On Windows 10, use the same path where available, or search Settings for Storage; labels and options can differ by version.
Use Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations
In Storage settings, review Storage Sense, Temporary files, or Cleanup recommendations, depending on the Windows version. Check the selected categories before you confirm cleanup. Storage Sense’s defaults can remove temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin; it does not clean Downloads or cloud files unless you configure those options. Microsoft states that “Storage Sense works on your system drive only, which contains the Windows operating system and is usually referred to as C:.” Read Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance.

Take particular care with Previous Windows installation(s): deleting the previous installation removes the option to roll back to the earlier Windows version. Keep personal files you still need, and do not select categories just to make the cleanup number larger.
Other built-in cleanup options
Disk Cleanup is another Windows tool for reviewing removable files. Search the Start menu for Disk Cleanup, choose the drive, review the categories, and confirm only items you intend to remove. That can help when storage is constrained; buying or connecting a drive does not directly speed up unrelated CPU, memory, or software problems.

6. Uninstall apps you no longer use
Remove applications you recognize and no longer need through Settings > Apps (the exact label may vary by Windows version). Uninstalling unused software can reduce clutter and sometimes background activity. Do not remove a program solely because its name is unfamiliar; first check whether it belongs to hardware, Windows, or software you use.

Reduce visual effects
If the PC still feels sluggish, reducing Windows visual effects may make the interface feel more responsive on some systems. Search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows and review the visual-effects choices. Prefer selective changes if you want to preserve effects you find useful.
Use Best performance mode with a laptop tradeoff in mind
On a plugged-in PC where power use and heat are acceptable, you can consider Best performance in Windows’ power-mode controls. The setting can use more power, drain a laptop battery faster, and make the device warmer. It is a tradeoff, not a guaranteed fix; return to a balanced setting when battery life or temperature matters.

8. Know when built-in cleanup is not enough
If the steps above do not help, the cause may be a specific fault or a hardware limit rather than unnecessary files or apps. Microsoft cautions that older PCs whose hardware no longer meets modern performance needs may not improve significantly with these steps. The general checklist cannot diagnose every failing or underpowered component.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended then. These performance steps can still describe built-in options, but they do not change Windows 10’s support status. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
