Use a numeric comparator that subtracts the first value from the second: (a, b) => b - a. For example:
const numbers: number[] = [10, 3, 25, 7];
const descending = numbers.sort((a, b) => b - a);
console.log(descending); // [25, 10, 7, 3]This sorts largest to smallest. The choice between sort() and toSorted() depends on whether you want to change the original array.
Sort the existing array with sort()
sort() changes the array in place and returns the same array reference. Use it when replacing the original order is intended.
const scores: number[] = [12, 40, 7, 40];
scores.sort((a, b) => b - a);
console.log(scores); // [40, 40, 12, 7]The comparator returns a negative value when its first argument should come before its second, a positive value when it should come after, and zero when they compare equal. With b - a, larger numbers are placed first. The ascending counterpart is (a, b) => a - b. MDN explains the comparator and in-place behavior of sort().

Keep the original array unchanged with toSorted()
If you need the input order later, use toSorted() to produce a new array:
const scores: number[] = [12, 40, 7, 40];
const sortedScores = scores.toSorted((a, b) => b - a);
console.log(sortedScores); // [40, 40, 12, 7]
console.log(scores); // [12, 40, 7, 40]MDN documents toSorted() as the non-mutating alternative. Check that the runtime where your code runs supports it. If TypeScript does not recognize the method, check the project’s configured lib target; a type declaration alone does not add runtime support.

Why a comparator is necessary for numbers
Calling numbers.sort() without a comparator does not request numeric order. JavaScript compares the string conversions of values, which can produce a surprising result: [1, 30, 4, 21, 100000] sorts by default to [1, 100000, 21, 30, 4]. Supplying (a, b) => b - a gives the sort operation numeric ordering instead. MDN describes the default string-based comparison.
Handle ties and unusual values deliberately
Equal numbers
When two finite values are equal, subtraction returns zero. Modern JavaScript sorting is stable, so values that compare equal retain their original relative order. This matters when extending the comparator to objects or records with equal numeric keys.

NaN values
If an array may contain NaN, subtraction can itself return NaN; do not assume the simple comparator expresses the ordering you want. Define an explicit rule for where NaN belongs, such as before or after finite numbers, and implement that rule in the comparator.
Values supplied as strings
The examples assume the array contains numbers and is typed as number[]. If input arrives as strings, validate and convert it first; a numeric comparator should not be used as a substitute for parsing or input validation.

TypeScript uses JavaScript’s sorting behavior
No package or TypeScript-specific sorting API is needed for a numeric array. TypeScript preserves JavaScript runtime behavior, so sort() and toSorted() work according to the JavaScript runtime and its supported features. See the TypeScript documentation on TypeScript for the New Programmer.
