During “Escape from Helheim” in God of War (2018), find the Nornir chest on the return trip, before boarding the spectral ship. Break all three runic seal statues to open it. One statue can appear in any of three locations, and another is hidden inside a movable block.
Where to find the Helheim Nornir chest
After clearing the dock during “Escape from Helheim,” push the large stone block into the gap and use it to cross. Follow the walkway to the chest. This is a quest-area chest, not one to look for elsewhere in Helheim.

Complete the puzzle before boarding the ship. Game of Guides describes this area as accessible only during the chapter and says the chest is excluded from the game’s Nornir chest completion total. Game8’s search excerpt calls it permanently missable after boarding, but its page could not be opened for confirmation. The dependable approach is to open it while you are there. Game of Guides’ Nornir chest guide and Game8’s chest guide provide those respective claims.
How to open the chest
The puzzle requires breaking three runic seal statues. Prima Games’ walkthrough gives the detailed route below; its chest guide also notes that one seal’s location varies between playthroughs. Prima Games’ walkthrough
#1 Best Overall
- Physical combat over the shoulder free camera brings the action closer than ever combat in God of war is up close frenetic and unflinching. Kratos' Axes powerful, magic and multi faceted is a brutal weapon as well as a versatile tool for exploration
- Midgard and beyond: Set within the untamed forests, mountains, and realms of Norse lore, God of war features a distinctly new setting with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters, and gods
- Vicious, physical combat with an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before
- Burn the bramble beside the chest. From the chest, head right and use the Blades of Chaos to burn the Hel bramble. This exposes a second movable block that is obstructing a passage.
- Look for the seal whose position varies. Check the three possible locations in your current layout: a low pillar reached through the narrow side passage and ledge; a tall pillar across the water; or the passage opened by moving the second block. This is the only runic statue in the game that Prima’s walkthrough identifies as having a randomized position.
- Position the second block to reach the hidden seal. Pull it only partway, until it covers the narrow side passage. Look through the iron bars on the block’s front to spot the statue inside; the back is open. Climb over the block, drop behind it onto the ledge, and break the statue with the Leviathan Axe.
- Move the block beneath the yellow-marked ledge. Pull it all the way beneath the ledge beside the chest, then climb onto the block and up to the ledge. From the Hacksilver chest there, look right toward a broken column in the water. Throw the Leviathan Axe slightly above the statue’s head to break the final seal.
- Return to the Nornir chest. With all three seals broken, open the chest.
How to identify the variable seal
Use landmarks rather than relying on compass directions: look first at the low pillar by the narrow side passage, then the tall pillar across the water, and then the passage exposed by the second block. The statue appears in one of those three places, according to Prima Games. Its walkthrough is the most specific source for the puzzle; Gameranx independently confirms the return-trip setting and the large-block and bramble mechanics, though with less detail.
