Then inspect the data, choose a method that fits the question, evaluate it appropriately, and explain what the results do—and do not—show. A workflow such as CRISP-DM can keep the work organized, but the prompt, rubric, and data should determine the actual analysis.
1. Turn the prompt into a plan
Before opening a notebook or writing code, rewrite the assignment as one sentence describing what you need to find out. For example: “Use the supplied customer data to identify which factors are associated with cancellation, then present the evidence in a report.” This makes the intended question easier to distinguish from optional exploration.
Next, extract the requirements into a checklist:
- Question: What should the analysis answer?
- Deliverables: Is the submission a notebook, written report, charts, a trained model, or some combination?
- Constraints: Does the prompt require a particular language, method, dataset, or format?
- Evaluation: What does the rubric reward, and what evidence must you provide?
- Assumptions: What is unclear, and what reasonable interpretation will you state?
Separate mandatory requirements from ideas you might explore if time permits. If the prompt leaves an important detail open, make your assumption explicit in the submission rather than allowing it to silently shape the analysis. The IBM Data Science Methodology course description uses problem definition and the CRISP-DM stages as part of its methodology coursework; its course requirements are an example, not a universal rubric.
2. Decide what kind of analysis the question needs
Classify the goal before selecting an algorithm. A question may ask you to describe what is in the data, estimate a relationship, predict an outcome, or discover groups. If prediction is required, identify the target variable and its type:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Classification: The target is a category, such as whether a transaction is fraudulent.
- Regression: The target is numeric, such as a sale price.
- Clustering or other exploratory grouping: There is no labeled target, and the task is to look for structure in the observations.
For non-predictive tasks, state what evidence would answer the question: for example, a summary of a distribution, a comparison between groups, or an estimate of an association. Choose the success criteria before trying multiple approaches. The scikit-learn user guide covers supervised and unsupervised learning, evaluation, model selection, and common pitfalls.
3. Inspect the data before transforming it
First establish what the dataset contains and whether it can support the question. Check its dimensions, column names, data types, and the meaning and units of important variables. Then examine missing and invalid values, duplicate records, unusual values, and—if there is a target—its distribution. Use descriptive summaries and visualizations to investigate distributions and relationships rather than choosing transformations by habit.
Keep a record of consequential decisions: which rows or columns were excluded, how missing values were handled, how variables were encoded or scaled, and why. This makes the analysis easier to review and reproduce, and helps distinguish a data limitation from a modeling result.

Watch for leakage
In predictive work, data leakage occurs when information that would not be available at prediction time influences model fitting or evaluation. A related procedural mistake is fitting preprocessing steps using held-out data. Keep preprocessing and model fitting inside the training and validation process; do not use the held-out evaluation data to fit transformations or select a model. The scikit-learn guide to common pitfalls discusses preprocessing consistency and leakage.

4. Establish a baseline, then improve with a reason
Begin with a simple, defensible analysis or model that gives you a comparison point. For prediction, use a suitable train-and-validation approach, and keep all learned preprocessing within that process. A result measured on the same observations used to fit a model does not, by itself, show how well the model performs on new observations.
Only add complexity when it addresses a clear need: a weak score, a meaningful error pattern, a requirement in the prompt, or a trade-off such as interpretability. When comparing candidate approaches, use the same data split and relevant evaluation measure. Also consider assumptions, interpretability, computational cost, and fit to the assignment; for deployment-oriented work, account for operational constraints and monitoring. There is no universally best algorithm independent of the question.

5. Evaluate with measures that match the task
Choose a metric based on what counts as a useful answer and which errors matter. A score without context can hide poor performance on an important class or an unacceptable error size.
For classification
Accuracy may be insufficient when classes are imbalanced or when different mistakes have different consequences. Precision, recall, and F1 are alternatives to consider, depending on whether false positives, missed positives, or a balance between the two matters most. Explain the metric you used and what it means for the assignment’s question.

For regression
Use an error measure suited to the task, such as mean squared error, and consider whether the scale of the error is meaningful in context. Interpret the size and pattern of errors rather than treating a single number as a complete explanation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Present the answer in the requested format
Lead with the answer to the original question, then show the evidence behind it. Use readable tables or plots where they clarify a result, and explain important data and modeling choices in language the intended reader can follow. State assumptions and limitations near the conclusions they qualify.
For a notebook, organize code and commentary in the order a reviewer needs to understand the work: question, data, preparation, analysis, evaluation, and interpretation. For a report, give the findings and supporting evidence prominence rather than making the reader infer the answer from code. A university curriculum handbook gives examples of project deliverables such as notebooks with code and commentary, visual reports, ethical reflection, and a final dataset; your assignment’s own instructions take precedence.

7. Review the work and iterate
Before submitting, check the analysis against both the question and the rubric. Confirm that every requested artifact is present, results can be reproduced, the evaluation method matches the task, and each conclusion is supported by evidence. If the analysis does not answer the prompt, revisit the framing, data quality, or method rather than adding complexity automatically.
CRISP-DM—business understanding, data understanding, data preparation, modeling, evaluation, and deployment—is a useful scaffold for this process, not a one-way checklist. Evaluation may reveal that the original question was framed poorly, the data cannot support it, or the chosen metric does not reflect the assignment’s goal. In that case, revise the earlier decision and document the change. The DASCA data science workflow overview and IBM’s Data Science Methodology course describe workflow stages and iterative refinement.
