Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse @pytest.mark.skip(reason="...") to always skip a test, @pytest.mark.skipif(condition, reason="...") to skip it when a known condition is true, and pytest.skip("...") when the reason is discovered at runtime. For tests that need an optional dependency, use pytest.importorskip(). Use xfail for tests that should run even though failure is expected—not as another way to skip.
Choose the right way to skip a test
| Need | Use | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Always skip a particular test | @pytest.mark.skip(reason="...") |
The marker makes pytest skip the test rather than execute it. |
| Skip when a known condition is true | @pytest.mark.skipif(condition, reason="...") |
Use for conditions such as platform or version that can be evaluated during collection. |
| Decide after setup or execution begins | pytest.skip("...") |
Use when the relevant condition is only discovered at runtime. |
| Skip if an optional module is unavailable | pytest.importorskip("module_name") |
Use when the test requires an importable optional dependency. |
| Keep a test collected but expect failure | @pytest.mark.xfail(...) |
The test normally runs and is reported as XFAIL or XPASS. |
| Prevent files or directories from being collected | Collection configuration or hooks | Skipping applies to collected test items; it is not the mechanism for excluding paths from collection. |
Skip one test every time
Put the skip marker directly above the test and give a short reason. The reason appears in pytest’s reporting and helps explain why the test is disabled.
import pytest
@pytest.mark.skip(reason="waiting for the service endpoint")
def test_service_endpoint():
...
Skip tests when a condition is true
Use skipif for a condition pytest can evaluate while collecting tests. In this example, the test is relevant only on Windows:
import sys
import pytest
@pytest.mark.skipif(sys.platform != "win32", reason="requires Windows")
def test_windows_feature():
...
Apply the condition to a class or module
A skipif marker can apply to an individual test, a test class, or a module. To apply it to every test in a module, assign it to pytestmark:

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import sys
import pytest
pytestmark = pytest.mark.skipif(
sys.platform != "win32",
reason="tests in this module require Windows",
)
If more than one applicable skipif condition is present, pytest skips the test when any of them is true. Prefer boolean conditions; condition strings remain supported mainly for backward compatibility.
Skip after discovering a runtime condition
When the condition cannot be known at collection time—for example, a service configuration is checked during the test—call pytest.skip() where that condition is discovered:
import pytest
def test_feature():
if not valid_config():
pytest.skip("configuration is unavailable")
To stop an entire module at import time, call pytest.skip(reason, allow_module_level=True). Without allow_module_level=True, module-level use is not enabled.

Skip when an optional dependency is missing
pytest.importorskip() attempts to import a module and skips when the import cannot be made. It returns the imported module if available, so the test can use it immediately:

optional_lib = pytest.importorskip("optional_lib")
def test_optional_feature():
assert optional_lib.feature()
You can require a minimum module version with minversion=. The current API specifies ModuleNotFoundError as the default exception type. If other import errors should also trigger a skip, pass exc_type=ImportError. This argument’s behavior is version-sensitive: check the documentation matching the pytest version installed in your project, especially if maintaining a suite on older pytest releases.
Skip versus xfail
A skip says that running the test is not appropriate under the current conditions—for example, the platform is unsupported or a required external resource is unavailable. An expected failure (xfail) says that running the test remains meaningful, but it is expected to fail, perhaps because of a known bug or missing feature. Pytest normally runs an xfailed test and reports XFAIL if it fails as expected or XPASS if it passes unexpectedly.

Use @pytest.mark.xfail(run=False) when you want to record the expected-failure status without executing the test. Set strict=True if an unexpected pass should fail the suite; the xfail_strict configuration option can set that behavior by default.

pytest -rxXs
The -r option controls which test outcomes appear in the short summary report. Pytest counts skipped and xfailed tests separately.
Exclude test files or directories instead
If the goal is to keep files or directories from being collected at all, configure test collection or use collection hooks. A skip marker acts on a test item after pytest has collected it; it does not itself exclude a path from discovery. The exact collection configuration depends on how the project organizes and collects tests.
Troubleshoot skipped tests
- A test is skipped unexpectedly: Check its
skipifcondition and any applicable class- or module-level markers. Multiple applicable conditions skip the test if any one is true. Runpytest -rsto inspect the reported reason. - A missing dependency does not produce the expected skip: Confirm the module name passed to
importorskip()and check the pytest version’s behavior for import exceptions. The current default isModuleNotFoundError; useexc_type=ImportErrorif other import errors should count as missing. - Module-level
pytest.skip()is rejected: Passallow_module_level=Truewhen skipping during module import. - You need to omit a directory, not report skipped tests: Configure collection or add a collection hook rather than marking individual tests to skip.
- A known-bug test should still provide a signal: Consider
xfailrather than skip; pytest can then report whether the expected failure occurred or the test unexpectedly passed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I skip an entire pytest module?
Yes. Set a module-level `pytestmark` to a `skipif` marker for a collection-time condition, or use `pytest.skip(reason, allow_module_level=True)` when the decision is made during module import.
Does a skipped pytest test count as a failure?
No. Pytest reports skips separately from failures; use `pytest -rs` to see the skip reasons.
