To mute only certain apps while a Focus is on, open Settings > Focus, select the Focus, tap Apps (or Choose Apps), choose Silence Notifications From, and add the apps. Those apps are silenced while that Focus is active; their notification settings outside the Focus are unchanged. Apple’s Focus instructions show the current setup.

Open Settings and tap Focus.

Select the Focus you want to change, such as Work, Personal, Sleep, or Do Not Disturb. You can also create a custom Focus from this screen.

Tap Apps or Choose Apps. Labels can vary; look for the app-selection control inside the selected Focus.

Choose Silence Notifications From, then add the apps you want muted.

Turn on that Focus when you want the rule to apply, or set a schedule if it should activate automatically.

Choose between silencing apps and allowing only selected apps
Focus offers two ways to define the app list. Pick the one that matches how many apps you want to hear from:

| Silence Notifications From | You want most apps to remain available, but a few to be muted. | Add the apps to silence. |
| Allow Notifications From | You want notifications from only a small set of apps. | Add the apps that may notify you. |
These lists belong to the individual Focus you edit. A different Focus can have a different app list.

Make sure the Focus is active when you need it
The app rule applies while its Focus is active. You can switch a Focus on manually, or arrange for it to turn on automatically at a time, at a location, or when you open a particular app. Apple explains these options in Turn on or schedule a Focus on iPhone.
Sleep Focus is tied to the sleep schedule configured in Health. For setup and scheduling details, see Apple’s Focus setup guide.

Check settings that can change what gets through
Time Sensitive Notifications
If your goal is to block every interruption, review the Focus’s Time Sensitive Notifications setting. When enabled, it allows time-sensitive notifications from apps to arrive immediately, so it may work against that goal. Whether an app can send time-sensitive notifications depends on its support and settings; Apple describes the option in its Focus notification guide and notification settings guide.

Focus filters are separate from the app notification list. They adjust information or behavior in supported apps and system features—for example, which mail account or calendar is shown. Apple says Focus filters do not sync across devices when Share Across Devices is enabled. See Apple’s Focus setup instructions for details.

Sharing settings across devices and with contacts
Share Across Devices lets Focus settings be used on Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Focus Status is a separate setting: if you share it, people contacting you may see that your notifications are silenced. These controls are described in Apple’s Focus notification guide and Focus setup guide.

If you want an app’s notifications off even when no Focus is active, change its app-wide notification setting: open Settings > Notifications, select the app, and turn off Allow Notifications. You can also adjust alert locations, sounds, badges, and previews where those controls are available. Apple’s notification settings guide explains the options.
Use a Focus app list for temporary, context-based muting; use Settings > Notifications when you want a change that is not limited to a Focus.
