To shuffle videos inside scheduled blocks on a YouTube 24/7 stream, make a separate playlist for each block, enable shuffle for each playlist, and use a separate scheduler to decide when each block plays. OBS with VLC can shuffle and loop a playlist, but its documented media-source controls do not schedule playlists by clock time. A calendar-based playout service can combine playlists with scheduled time slots.
How scheduled blocks and shuffled playlists fit together
Think of each block as its own playout task: the block defines which videos are eligible to play, shuffle randomizes their order, and a scheduling layer determines when the block is active. Shuffle alone does not create a timetable, and scheduling a YouTube broadcast is not the same as scheduling media inside that broadcast.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a live broadcast as an event streamed on YouTube and supports binding it to a video stream. YouTube Help’s scheduling feature concerns when uploaded videos are published. Option 1: Use OBS with VLC and a separate scheduler
This approach suits creators already running OBS who want control over local files and can maintain a separate way to switch blocks on a timetable. OBS’s official VLC Video source supports playlist, shuffle, and loop controls; VLC must be installed for the source to appear. OBS Media Sources documentation

- Install VLC. Install the VLC media player on the computer that runs OBS. Confirm that OBS offers the VLC Video source.
- Make a playlist for each block. Keep the videos for each scheduled block in its own playlist or separate scene/source arrangement. This keeps one block’s eligible videos distinct from another’s.
- Add the playlist in OBS. Open the scene where the block should play, add a VLC Video source, and add that block’s local video files to its playlist.
- Enable shuffle. In the VLC Video source’s properties, enable Shuffle Playlist. OBS describes this as randomizing files rather than keeping the file-list order; it does not guarantee a unique order on every activation.
- Choose loop behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if the block should continue cycling until the schedule changes. If it should play once, leave looping off and plan what should happen after the final item.
- Schedule the block separately. Use an external scheduler or playout system to activate the correct playlist or scene at the desired time. OBS’s cited media-source documentation explains playlist playback and shuffle, not clock-based scheduling. Scene changes therefore need their own scheduling or automation mechanism.
- Test before going live. Make a short recording or private test. Check the video order, audio levels, transitions, loop behavior, and what happens when the source becomes visible again. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing settings before going live. OBS Quick Start Guide
What OBS shuffle does—and does not—promise
Shuffle randomizes playlist order. The OBS documentation does not say that each loop or scheduled activation will use a never-before-seen sequence, so treat it as randomization rather than a guarantee of unique sequencing.
Option 2: Use calendar-based cloud playout
A calendar-based playout service can combine the two jobs: place videos, playlists, or compositions in time slots, then set loop or play-once behavior and recurrence. The vendor’s guide says playlist items reshuffle after each loop pass. This is a vendor-specific description, not a general guarantee for other playout systems. Check the service’s current features, plan availability, and costs before committing.
