To shuffle local videos in a continuous YouTube Live broadcast, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source: add your files, enable Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist, then send OBS to YouTube Live with an encoder stream. YouTube’s own loop control repeats viewer playback; it does not create a shuffled encoder livestream. The local method requires your computer, media files, OBS, and internet connection to remain available.
Set up a shuffled OBS playlist
- Check that your channel can stream live. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; creators must be at least 16 to live stream. Check your current eligibility in YouTube Live Control Room and review YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video Source depends on VLC being installed. Match architectures: OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Add the playlist in OBS. Create or select a scene, add a VLC Video Source, and add the local video files to its playlist. In the source settings, enable Shuffle Playlist to randomize the file order and Loop Playlist to restart the playlist when it reaches the end. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube Live Control Room, choose an encoder-based stream and use its stream setup details in OBS’s streaming configuration. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Follow YouTube’s current setup flow at Get started with live streaming.
- Preview before relying on it. Check that videos play, shuffle and loop as expected, transitions are acceptable, and audio is present in the broadcast. For a local setup to keep broadcasting, the computer must stay on and connected, and the files must remain available.
What shuffle and loop control here
OBS’s VLC Video Source handles the file playlist: shuffle changes playback order, while loop restarts the playlist after it finishes. YouTube’s documented repeat feature applies to playback in the YouTube player, for viewers repeating a video or playlist; it is not a substitute for sending a shuffled live feed from an encoder. If you only want a viewer to repeat ordinary playback, use YouTube’s playlist and video loop controls.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video Source is missing: install VLC, then confirm its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC according to OBS documentation.
- The playlist stops after the last file: open the VLC Video Source settings and enable Loop Playlist.
- The files always play in the same order: enable Shuffle Playlist in the VLC Video Source settings.
- YouTube will not let the channel go live: check verification, any live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, age eligibility, and the channel’s current Live Control Room status.
- The live feed ends when you leave: a local OBS stream depends on the computer, files, OBS, and network staying available. If that operating requirement is not workable, consider a cloud-hosted setup instead.
Rights and channel suitability
Shuffling and looping solve playback order, not permission to broadcast. Use videos and audio you have the rights to stream, and check YouTube’s current policies and account status before leaving a channel live for extended periods. No particular stream duration, approval outcome, or reused-content eligibility is guaranteed by the playlist controls themselves.
