To randomize prerecorded videos in a 24/7 YouTube live stream, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source: add your local media files, enable Shuffle Playlist, and leave Loop Playlist on. OBS sends the shuffled playback to YouTube through an encoder connection. This is different from shuffling a playlist on a YouTube watch page; the method below randomizes source files before they reach YouTube.
What you need before you start
- OBS Studio installed on a computer that can stay on and connected while it streams.
- VLC installed. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on it; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says to install 64-bit VLC.
- Video files that the computer can access, and permission to livestream them.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
OBS documents media sources for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its Media Sources guide describes VLC Video as the playlist option; the built-in Media Source is for playing an individual file and its documented Loop setting repeats that file.
Set up a shuffled, looping playlist in OBS
- Make sure VLC is installed. Match VLC’s bitness to OBS where applicable: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installing VLC if VLC Video is not available as a source.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, select the scene that will carry the stream. In the Sources panel, click +, choose VLC Video, and create a new source.
- Add your files to the playlist. In the source properties, add the local video files you want included. Keep those files accessible for the full broadcast; moving or disconnecting them can interrupt playback.
- Enable shuffle and looping. Check Shuffle Playlist to randomize playback rather than follow the file-list order. Check Loop Playlist so playback starts again when the playlist runs out. OBS lists shuffle as off by default and loop as on by default, so verify both settings rather than relying on defaults.
- Check the scene before going live. Confirm the VLC source is visible in the preview, the audio is appropriate, and the video fits the canvas. If you have multiple scene sources, ensure another source is not obscuring the playlist.
OBS’s documentation says Shuffle Playlist randomizes the media files or leaves them in list order. It does not specify a particular random algorithm, promise a different order on every cycle, or guarantee that a file cannot repeat before all others play.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream and copy its server URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service, then enter the stream key and server details as appropriate for the connection flow. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start streaming in OBS. Check the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, then follow the control-room prompt to go live.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the stream URL and key workflow. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable streaming and test ahead of the time you plan to broadcast.

Understand what shuffle does—and what it does not
It shuffles source media, not a YouTube-hosted playlist
The files in OBS’s VLC Video source are what the encoder plays and sends to YouTube. The documented method does not feed a YouTube playlist URL into OBS or randomize the order of videos hosted on a YouTube watch page.
A continuous feed is not the same thing as an archived replay
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise an archive for one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. In YouTube’s Live Streaming API terminology, a broadcast is a distinct watchable YouTube video, while a stream is the audio-video transmission; the API documentation gives an example of an ongoing 24/7 feed alongside a separate completed broadcast. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams. Plan your replay needs separately rather than assuming the continuous feed will produce a complete archive.

Shuffle does not grant rebroadcast rights
Only include media you have the right to livestream. The ability to play a file through OBS does not establish that you may rebroadcast it; copyrighted material can lead to claims, restrictions, or other channel consequences.

When a cloud service may suit the job better
OBS keeps the playlist and encoder on your computer, so that computer and its connection must remain available for the stream. If you specifically need another ingestion protocol, HLS is not required for shuffling; YouTube’s HLS setup has its own compatible-encoder and segment requirements and higher latency than RTMP because it sends video segments rather than a continuous stream.
