To show your hard drive on the Mac desktop, open Finder settings, go to the General tab, and tick Hard disks under Show these items on the desktop. The hard-disk icon then appears on the desktop. Apple’s own guide describes this checkbox and this result.
Turn on the hard-disk icon
- Click the Finder icon in the Dock to make Finder the active app.
- In the menu bar, choose Finder > Settings. On older macOS releases the same item is labelled Finder > Preferences; Apple’s current Finder guide uses Settings.
- Click General.
- Under Show these items on the desktop, select Hard disks.
- Close the Settings window. The hard-disk icon should now be visible on the desktop.
The same section also controls other connected items. Apple lists external disks, CDs, DVDs, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and connected servers as items you can show on the desktop or in the Finder sidebar. Apple’s wording for the checkbox is: “if you select ‘Hard disks,’ icons for your hard disks appear on your desktop.”
Add disks to the Finder sidebar
If you want connected disks listed in Finder’s sidebar as well, open Finder > Settings, click Sidebar, and select the items you want under the locations list. Apple also notes that you can drag a disk into the Favorites section of the sidebar. Both options change how Finder displays the disk; neither one affects whether the disk is mounted.

The desktop checkbox is a display preference. It decides whether Finder places icons for connected storage on your desktop. It cannot make a drive appear if macOS does not detect it, and it does not repair a disk that is disconnected, unmounted, or failing.

If you have turned on Hard disks and a particular drive still does not appear, the setting is probably not the cause. Check these points first:
- Connection: reseat the cable, try a different port or cable, and confirm the drive has power.
- Detection: open Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. If the drive is listed there, it is connected but may not be mounted. If it is not listed at all, the problem lies with the connection or the drive itself.
- Mounting: if Disk Utility shows the volume but it is greyed out or unmounted, select it and click Mount.
- Failure: if the drive is listed but its partitions show errors, or the drive makes unusual noises, back up its contents before running any repair.
Apple’s visibility instructions do not explain why a specific drive fails to appear. For that, the diagnosis depends on your exact Mac, drive, and connection, so use the checks above to narrow the cause.

Managed Macs
On a work or school Mac, Finder behaviour may be controlled by a device-management profile. Apple documents that these settings can hide internal and external storage icons. If the checkbox is missing or ignores your changes, ask the administrator who manages the Mac rather than repeatedly changing the setting.
Versions and naming
The menu name varies by macOS release. Look for Settings on current versions and Preferences on older ones. The steps and checkbox label are the same in both.
