The most straightforward way to show login dates is to install a plugin that adds a Last Login column to the WordPress Users screen. WP Last Login records logins through WordPress’s wp_login action and provides a sortable column; When Last Login adds sorting and a login-history table. Both begin collecting data only after activation.

Choose the right type of last-login display

Option What its WordPress.org listing documents Use it when
WP Last Login Sortable Users-screen column, exact time on hover, multisite user-list support, and a neutral em dash when no login is recorded. It captures logins through the standard wp_login action. The listing currently reports version 8, WordPress 6.5 or higher, PHP 8.1 or higher, and testing up to WordPress 7.1.2. You need a simple, sortable column for most users.
When Last Login Sortable Users-screen column, a login-history table, optional IP recording, and listed integrations or add-ons. Its listing explicitly says it does not track logins that happened before activation. You need historical entries from the tracking period, optional IP data, or one of its documented integrations.
Admin Users Logged In A dashboard widget showing administrators and their last login. You only need administrator activity in the dashboard, not a column for every account.
WP-CLI wp user list Can list users and order by a last_activity user-meta value when that metadata exists. You already maintain the relevant metadata and want a command-line report. This page does not establish complete, built-in WordPress login tracking.

Plugin-directory compatibility and feature statements are claims made by the listed authors, not independent tests of your site. Check the current listing, support notes, WordPress version, PHP version, login integrations, and multisite requirements before installing.

Install and display the date

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins → Add New Plugin.
  2. Search for the exact directory name, such as WP Last Login or When Last Login. Open the listing and review its current requirements and changelog.
  3. Select Install Now, then Activate.
  4. Open Users → All Users. The selected plugin should add a last-login column; use the column heading to sort if the plugin supports sorting. WP Last Login documents the precise time on hover.
  5. If you chose When Last Login, open the plugin’s documented history view when you need more than the latest timestamp.

The directory listings describe this installation flow; your site may expose different columns or controls because of its WordPress version, theme, hosting configuration, or other plugins.

Understand what the date actually means

Tracking starts at activation

A plugin cannot reconstruct login events that happened before it was active. When Last Login says pre-activation logins are not tracked and shows “Never” for users without a login recorded since activation. Therefore, a missing value means “no recorded login in this tracking period,” not proof that the user has never logged in.

Login method matters

WP Last Login says it listens for WordPress’s standard wp_login action. A login flow that does not trigger that action, or an external authentication system with different hooks, may not produce a timestamp. Confirm support for any single-sign-on, social-login, REST, or custom authentication path you use.

Use dates for decisions carefully

A last-login timestamp is evidence of a recorded authentication event, not proof that an account is safe to delete. If you are reviewing inactive accounts, define an inactivity period, notify users, preserve required records, and check whether service accounts, API users, or non-interactive accounts are involved. The plugins listed here document display and history features; they do not establish automatic account deletion.

Privacy and retention considerations

When Last Login lists optional IP recording. Before enabling it, decide whether collecting and retaining IP addresses is necessary for your security or audit purpose, limit access, set a retention period, and review the obligations that apply to your organization and region. Do not assume a plugin is GDPR-compliant merely because its directory listing mentions a feature; read its current documentation and your own privacy requirements.

Quick selection checklist

  • Need a sortable column for everyone: compare WP Last Login and When Last Login.
  • Need a login-history table: choose the option whose current listing documents that history view, such as When Last Login.
  • Need only administrators in a dashboard widget: consider Admin Users Logged In.
  • Need multisite support: verify the current WP Last Login listing and test the network’s user-list workflow.
  • Need external authentication coverage: confirm that the integration triggers the hook the plugin relies on.
  • Need historical data immediately: a newly installed plugin cannot supply pre-activation events unless another system already recorded them.

WordPress.org’s 2026 directory snapshot reports more than 10,000 active installations for WP Last Login and more than 50,000 for When Last Login. Those figures are time-sensitive directory counts, not measures of security, quality, or compatibility with your particular site; recheck the listings before making a choice.
