To show the current track on a 24/7 YouTube radio stream, get its title and artist from the playback source and render that information into the video sent to YouTube. In OBS, you can use a browser-source overlay connected to a local metadata API, or native text and image sources updated from local files. Some hosted playout services provide a built-in Now Playing element. YouTube’s live-event title is broadcast metadata, not a changing on-screen song label.

Choose an overlay that matches your playback source

The right method depends on where the music plays and how that source exposes track information. A fixed playlist can use a maintained list of titles; dynamically selected playback needs an integration that reads the player’s actual current state. An overlay cannot reliably identify a track if its source has no usable metadata.

YouTube Music desktop: local API and OBS browser source

YTMDesktop2 documents a local API and an OBS setup in which you copy an overlay URL and add it as a Browser Source. Its documented layout options include full card, compact, text, badge, fullscreen, stack, and ticker. See the YTMDesktop2 project documentation for its setup details.

YouTube Music desktop: Python bridge and local files

A community project documents a different approach: a bridge receives track metadata, writes title and artist to a text file, and saves cover art as an image file for OBS to read. It requires the YouTube Music desktop app and Python. This is community code, not a guaranteed or independently verified integration; review its requirements and behavior before relying on it unattended. See the project documentation.

YouTube or YouTube Music in a browser

The OBS forum resource “Music on stream” reports support for YouTube and YouTube Music, and says it can obtain titles from YouTube chapters or a video description playlist. Check that the resource is currently compatible with your browser and that its title source matches how your channel plays music. Chapters or a manually maintained playlist may not reflect dynamically selected playback. See the OBS forum resource.

Hosted continuous playout

A hosted playout provider documents a built-in Now Playing element that updates as named content rotates. This can reduce local integration work, but check the provider’s terms, pricing, reliability, and how it gets media metadata. See Livepush’s documentation.

Behringer XENYX 802S Premium Analog 8-Input Mixer with USB Streaming Interface
  • Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
  • Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
  • Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
  • Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device

Set up and verify the display

  1. Identify the playback source. Confirm which application actually plays the audio and whether track changes expose title and artist metadata. Decide whether a fixed track list is accurate enough or whether you need live metadata.
  2. Choose the matching overlay. For the documented YTMDesktop2 workflow, enable its local API, copy the overlay URL from its settings, then add it in OBS using Sources → + → Browser. For a local-file bridge, add OBS text and image sources that read the files it updates. Follow the selected project’s own installation instructions.
  3. Place the overlay in the outgoing scene. Check that it appears in the composed video and does not cover essential visuals. Preview a track change and verify the label follows the audio rather than merely showing a plausible title.
  4. Test state changes before leaving the stream unattended. Check track changes, pause, stop, missing metadata, and playback-app restart. A documented community bridge clears its text when playback stops but can retain the last track if YouTube Music fully closes, so a visible title may become stale. Decide how your setup will handle that case.
  5. Check layout and fallback behavior. Long titles can overflow; hosted-overlay documentation specifically recommends handling overflow. Test long artist and track names, album art, contrast, and placement. Configure a fallback—such as hiding the label or showing “Now playing unavailable”—when metadata is absent or stale.

Keep the track label separate from YouTube’s live-event details

A changing song label must be rendered into the video composition by OBS or supplied by the playout system. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents broadcast-level details such as actual and scheduled start and end times and viewer count; those fields are not documented as an automatic per-track graphic. See the YouTube LiveBroadcasts API reference.

Do not use Spotify’s current-track API as broadcast permission

Spotify’s current-track endpoint can expose the user’s playing item, but Spotify’s policy says its content must not be synchronized with visual media and may not be used for non-interactive broadcasting. The endpoint is not permission to pair Spotify recordings with a continuous YouTube radio stream. Check the currently playing track endpoint alongside Spotify’s developer policy.

Compare the practical trade-offs

  • Playback compatibility: Match the integration to the actual source—desktop YouTube Music, browser playback, or hosted playout.
  • Metadata source: Establish whether labels come from live player state or a maintained list, chapters, or description data.
  • Failure handling: Check what appears on pause, stop, missing data, app closure, or integration failure.
  • Presentation: Consider styling control, album art, title overflow, and screen placement.
  • Unattended operation and dependencies: A local setup depends on the computer and its software; hosted playout shifts some work to a service. Review recovery behavior, terms, and costs before choosing.

The documented options establish feature differences, not an independent reliability or cost ranking. Choose based on your playback source and the failure modes you can manage.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your 24/7 YouTube radio stream uses uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo can keep that video stream running from the cloud. To get started, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops uploaded video and recovers automatically if YouTube drops the stream. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and includes a free first day with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video, not camera input, and it does not itself establish that a track label is accurate; use a playlist or metadata workflow that supplies the right titles.
