For an always-on YouTube podcast stream, keep the public broadcast title stable and show the current episode inside the video as a “Now playing” overlay. In OBS Studio, add a text source that reads a local text file, then have your playlist controller or a small script update that file when playback changes. Use YouTube Studio or its Live Streaming API only if you want to change the public video title or description; that edits listing metadata, not the picture viewers see.
Choose where the episode information should appear
There are two different ways to show episode details, and they produce different results:
- Inside the video: An OBS text source or browser source renders the episode information into the outgoing picture. Viewers can see it while watching the stream.
- In the YouTube listing: YouTube Studio or the Live Streaming API changes the broadcast’s title or description. This changes video metadata; it does not add text to the video image.
For a continuous stream that moves through multiple episodes, a stable public title plus a “Now playing” overlay is usually easier to scan. YouTube’s API distinguishes a broadcast—the viewer-facing video or event—from the live stream resource that supplies transmission settings. A broadcast can be bound to a stream resource, and stream resources can be reused across broadcasts. YouTube Live Streaming API overview

- Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, set up the continuous broadcast and its encoder or stream settings. YouTube lets you choose metadata when creating a broadcast or edit it from stream settings or scheduling. Reusing stream settings copies metadata, settings, and the stream key; edit the new broadcast as needed. Manage live stream settings
- Add the label in OBS. In the scene used for the podcast stream, add a text source and select the option to read from a text file. Enter an initial label such as “Now playing: Episode 42 — Interview with …” and choose a legible font, size, color, and outline or background for the artwork behind it.
- Position it above the artwork. Place the text source higher in the OBS Sources list than the background or artwork source so it renders over them. Resize and position it in the preview, leaving enough margin that the title remains visible on the intended video frame.
- Connect episode changes to the file. Configure your playlist controller or media automation to replace the file’s contents when the current episode changes. A small local script can do the same if your player exposes the current item. The text-file method is documented by OBS; the connection to a particular playlist or player depends on that software and is not provided automatically by OBS.
- Test real transitions. Watch the outgoing OBS preview and a YouTube playback session while testing normal episode changes, skipped items, and reconnects. Confirm that the label changes to the correct episode and remains readable. Viewer delay and refresh timing mean the change may not appear at the exact instant the audio changes.
Use a browser source for a richer or remote overlay
If the label needs artwork, custom formatting, links, or metadata from a remote feed, make an overlay page and add it to OBS as a Browser source. OBS can load a local file or URL and lets you configure the browser viewport. Its guide describes availability on Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS browser source
- Build the overlay page. Use HTML, CSS, and, if needed, JavaScript to display the episode title and other details. Arrange for the page to read the current episode from the feed or local service your automation provides.
- Add it to the scene. In OBS, add a Browser source, choose a local file or enter the page URL, and set the viewport dimensions to suit the stream layout.
- Choose a sensible refresh approach. Start conservatively and test the page when the playlist advances and after OBS or the stream reconnects. The browser-source guide allows a custom frame rate, but it does not specify a best update interval or promise synchronization with the audio.
- Check the viewer-facing result. Confirm the overlay is visible in the outgoing picture and that its update timing is acceptable in actual YouTube playback. YouTube defines latency as the delay between capture and viewer playback; lower latency can mean more buffering. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Change the public YouTube title instead
If the episode name should appear in YouTube’s video listing rather than inside the picture, edit the broadcast metadata in YouTube Studio or update the broadcast’s video metadata through the Live Streaming API. The API lifecycle documentation says title and description fields can be updated at any time. This will not create an overlay. YouTube Live Streaming API broadcast lifecycle

Keep episode updates reliable and understandable
- Make the label describe the current audio. Include a clear episode title; add a number or show name only if it helps viewers identify the item.
- Test playlist skips and reconnects. Ensure the automation updates the label for skipped items and restores the current episode after a player, OBS, or stream reconnect.
- Allow for latency. A viewer may see the old label briefly after the audio changes. Test the actual stream rather than promising instantaneous updates or exact synchronization.
- Use a stable public title when appropriate. YouTube tags have a minimal discovery role except for content commonly misspelled. Scheduled streams can appear as upcoming and allow viewers to select “Notify me.” Manage live stream settings
Or let it run in the cloud
If you also want the continuous YouTube broadcast to run without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos and playlists on YouTube. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The current-episode overlay is a separate OBS or overlay-page feature; StreamNeo’s product details do not establish an episode-metadata overlay.
