To show the song that is playing now, add a now-playing overlay to the video output before it reaches YouTube. In OBS, that can be a Browser Source overlay or an integration that updates native text and image sources. YouTube’s live-video title describes the broadcast as a whole; it does not automatically change on screen for each song.

Why the song title needs an overlay

A YouTube live broadcast has metadata such as a title, but that metadata is separate from the picture viewers see. Google for Developers explains that “a liveBroadcast resource corresponds to exactly one YouTube video resource.” Use the broadcast title and description for the continuous stream; composite changing track information into the video with an overlay. See the YouTube LiveBroadcast resource and YouTube Live Streaming API overview.

Choose an overlay that can read your music player

First identify the player supplying the stream’s music, such as YouTube Music. Then check that the overlay you choose supports that player and can access its current track metadata. Support is tool- and player-specific, not universal; consult the tool’s current documentation for compatibility and setup requirements.

Browser Source overlay

The OBS Forums resource Music on stream describes a web-based current-song overlay and lists YouTube and YouTube Music among its supported services. Its listing describes theme and CSS customization and hiding the display when music is paused; it reports a last update of September 18, 2025. Check the listing and current instructions before relying on its support for your setup.

YTMDesktop2 documents a different browser-overlay workflow: enable its local API, configure an overlay, copy the generated URL, and add that URL as an OBS Browser Source. Documented layouts include full, compact, and text-only. Follow its current guidance for API and authentication settings: YTMDesktop2 documentation.

Native OBS text and image sources

The public ytmusic-obs GitHub project describes a Python bridge that reads YouTube Music track information and updates native OBS text and image sources. This avoids relying on a browser source for the display, but it remains a project-specific integration. Review its instructions, operating-system requirements, dependencies, and maintenance status, and confirm that your player exposes metadata in a compatible way.

Add and verify the overlay in OBS

  1. Identify the playback source. Note exactly which service or player supplies the music. Do not assume an overlay that supports one service can read another.
  2. Choose a documented integration. Use a Browser Source URL or a native text/image integration whose documentation covers your player and OBS setup. Follow its current installation and API or authentication steps.
  3. Add it to the outgoing scene. In OBS, add the overlay as a Browser Source or configure the integration’s native sources. Place the overlay above the video or background in the scene’s source stack, then position and size it where it remains readable.
  4. Check real track changes in the preview. Confirm that both title and artist appear and update when playback advances. Try a long title, and check that it does not run off-screen or obscure important content. If the overlay documents pause behavior, check what viewers see while playback is paused.
  5. Keep broadcast metadata separate. Give the YouTube live video a descriptive title for the continuous stream. The per-song display belongs in the production output, not in repeated edits to the broadcast title.

Why “Music in this video” is not a live overlay

YouTube Help says the “Music in this video” section appears on some videos, and that automatic additions are associated with specific cases, including Content ID claims or Audio Library music. It is not a dependable substitute for a deliberately placed, changing on-screen now-playing display. See YouTube Help: Music in this video.

Troubleshoot missing or stale track information

  • No title appears: Check that the overlay is visible in the active OBS scene, is positioned above the background or video, and has a valid URL or integration configuration. For a browser overlay, revisit its documented local API and authentication requirements.
  • The title does not change: Verify that the selected integration supports the actual player and that it can read that player’s current metadata. A working overlay connection does not establish compatibility with every playback source.
  • The overlay appears in OBS but not in the YouTube stream: Confirm that the scene containing it is the scene being sent to the broadcast. The overlay must be part of the outgoing production picture.
  • Text is clipped or hard to read: Reposition or resize the source and test with a long track title. Where supported, adjust the overlay’s layout or styling.
  • Compatibility is uncertain: Check the project’s current documentation and supported OS, player, and OBS versions before depending on it for a continuous stream. The listed examples do not establish universal compatibility or hands-on reliability.
