Use FFmpeg’s drawtext filter to put the current song or video title directly in the stream image. For titles that change during playback, have FFmpeg read a UTF-8 text file and reload it periodically while a separate helper updates that file atomically. This creates visible on-screen text; FFmpeg output metadata and YouTube’s broadcast title are separate fields and do not draw text over the video.

Choose the right kind of title

What you change What viewers see How it works
In-frame overlay Text composited into the video image FFmpeg’s drawtext filter renders text over video frames.
YouTube broadcast title The title associated with the broadcast or video on YouTube The YouTube API represents broadcast metadata in a liveBroadcast resource, including snippet.title. It is not text in the transmitted picture.
FFmpeg output metadata Metadata on the output container or stream context -metadata title=... sets a metadata value; it does not render visible lettering.

If the title must appear over the video while people watch, use the first approach. You can change the YouTube title separately when you need to update the platform’s video metadata; the cited API documentation does not establish a universal procedure for changing it in every live-broadcast state.

Check that your FFmpeg build supports drawtext

The filter depends on how FFmpeg was built. The FFmpeg filter documentation lists libfreetype as a requirement to compile drawtext; font fallback and text shaping features can have additional conditional dependencies. Confirm the filter is available in your installed build before assembling the stream command. If it is missing, use an FFmpeg build that includes the required support, or another overlay method.

Filter options and build support can vary by FFmpeg version and platform. Treat the filter shape below as a configuration pattern, not a tested, drop-in command for every operating system, input, or output graph.

ZowieBox, 4K HDMI NDI Video Encoder/Decoder, HDMI NDI
  • Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
  • Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
  • NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
  • UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
  • All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

Set up a dynamic title overlay

The robust pattern uses two processes: FFmpeg continuously draws the text file’s contents, and a separate script or helper obtains the current title and replaces the file when it changes.

  1. Create a UTF-8 text file. Put the current song or video title in it, for example Now playing: Example Track. Use a file path accessible to the FFmpeg process.
  2. Add drawtext to the video filter graph. Its essential shape is drawtext=fontfile=/path/to/font.ttf:textfile=/path/to/current-title.txt:reload=300. Choose a font file available on your system. Set position, font size, color, and optional box styling to suit the frame and maintain contrast.
  3. Choose a reload interval. The reload value is a frame interval. For example, at 30 frames per second, reload=300 checks the text file every 10 seconds. A lower interval reduces the wait for a title change but checks more often; choose it according to the stream’s frame rate and how quickly the display should update.
  4. Have a helper obtain and publish the title. The helper must know which track or video is currently playing and write that title to the text file. FFmpeg’s drawing filter does not identify the current item by itself. The appropriate detection method depends on the playlist, player, or external title source; there is no universal detector established for all inputs.
  5. Replace the file atomically. Write the new title to a temporary file in the same filesystem, then rename or replace the active text file. Do not overwrite the active file in place: FFmpeg could read it partway through a write. The FFmpeg documentation cautions that non-atomic updates can result in partial reads or failures.
  6. Test the rendered output. Start the stream with a known title, change the text file through the helper, and confirm the new title appears after the reload interval. Check that the font renders the characters you use and that the text remains readable against the video.

Using textfile also avoids much of the shell and filtergraph escaping required when embedding a changing title directly in a filter string. Keep the file in UTF-8, and check the exact filter syntax against the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build.

Common problems and fixes

  • No text appears: Confirm that the installed build includes drawtext, that the filter is connected to the video stream in the filter graph, and that the font and text-file paths are valid for the FFmpeg process.
  • The title stays unchanged: Check that the helper is updating the same file named by textfile, that the file is being replaced, and that the reload interval has elapsed. The helper—not drawtext—must obtain the new current title.
  • Text is cut off or hard to read: Adjust its position, font size, color, or optional box styling. Verify placement with the actual video dimensions and backgrounds.
  • Characters display incorrectly: Save the file as UTF-8 and verify that the selected font contains the needed glyphs. Font fallback and text shaping support depend on the FFmpeg build.
  • Text briefly disappears or is malformed during an update: Avoid writing over the active file. Write a complete temporary file and atomically rename or replace it instead.
  • Shell or filter parsing fails: Prefer a text file over embedding changing text in the filter expression. If the expression still fails, review escaping rules for your shell and FFmpeg filtergraph, which are separate parsing layers.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that loops uploaded videos 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option; it is not a replacement for adding a dynamic drawtext overlay to an FFmpeg filter graph. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the uploaded video running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
